Wrapping Up the Rest
2008-01-04 04:35:00 I'm going to cover the next few ESPN HoF "debates" in one post, since I have less to say about each of them. Michael Knisley and John Shea tackled Andrew Dawson's candidacy; here's how Shea justified his decision to vote for "The Hawk":For me, the most important ingredient when voting is this: When you saw him play, did you think he was a Hall of Famer or not? Cooperstown has the best Hall of Fame in sports because it's the toughest to get into, because not every borderline candidate is inducted. It could be argued that it's great not for who is in, but for who is not in.In the case of Dawson, I always thought he was usually better than everyone else on the field, a guy who could take over a game, and dominate an era. Plus, what an intimidating fellow. I covered the Padres in '87, Dawson's MVP year with the Cubs. There was a game in July in which Dawson took an Eric Show fastball on the cheek that required 24 stitches. At first, he was motionless and couldn't charge the moun...
MLB Rumors: Jayson Stark on Johan Santana
2007-12-19 20:18:00 Jayson Stark reports that an AL executive wonders why the Mets are perceived as less likely to land Johan Santana. Two reasons given by this executive why the Mets make sense. First, 19-year-old AA OF Fernando Martinez has a higher celing than the Red Sox's 24-year-old OF Jacoby Ellsbury, and, second, the Twins will never need to be worried about losing to Johan Santana until the World Series - if his NL team makes it that far. I can't say I disagree with the second reason, and the first seems plausible. Mr. Stark also offers up some gossip about the Yankees. He writes there is a potential tug-of-war going on over Phil Hughes. GM Brian Cashman wants to keep him while Hank Steinbrenner wants to include him in a Santana trade. A source tells Stark that Steinbrenner is "moving towards" including Hughes. I wonder how important the third player that has been rumored to be the sticking point actually is. This latest info implies the Yanks haven't settled o...

Jayson Stark: Even More Useless Than Previous Indicated
2007-07-19 20:35:00 ESPN's Jayson Stark delights in uncovering information that is, by is own admission, useless (or more accurately, publishing useless info that others uncover and send to him). Yet, while his columns are rarely worth reading, at least they're usually accurate--possibly because Stark himself is responsible for so little of the research. The same cannot be said of his latest vital contribution to the greater body of baseball knowledge, which has escaped the boundaries of the "Useless Information Department" and infiltrated the confines of "Rumblings and Grumblings."TrivialityTwo of the biggest names on the trading block this month -- Mark Teixeira and Jermaine Dye -- both had seasons of at least 43 homers and 120 RBIs last year. We bet you can't name the only player since 2001 who was traded, in either the offseason or midseason, following a season of at least 43 homers and 120 RBIs. (Answer later.)And we bet that you can't come up with an error-free trivia question. The Dye part i...
Will Carroll, Jerry Crasnick, Jayson Stark and Fantasy Football Chats
2007-04-20 16:23:00 With the recent news that Miguel Cabrera is dealing with an oblique tweak, I wouldn't be surprised to see Will Carroll's Fantasy Injury chat go for hours! It won't, but there is certainly enough injury news out there to easily cover more than the typical one hour. Of some interest, is the changing of the second fantasy chat from baseball to football. Should the Lions take the best player available, WR Calvin Johnson, and pair him with Roy Williams or are they gun shy because of their past inability to draft well in the first round? Is Johnson fantasy worthy if he is #2 behind Williams? If they do take Johnson, will Kitna become the trendy, over-drafted QB with Williams, Johnson and Furrey to throw to or will fantasy owners be gun shy because of the Lions past history? Click Fantasy Injuries with Will Carroll at 11AM. Click Jerry Crasnick at noon. Click Jayson Stark at 1PM. Click Fantasy Footbal Focus at 3PM. Click NFL w/Scouts' Keith Kidd at 4PM.

Will Carroll, Jayson Stark and Fantasy Football Chats
2007-04-13 16:19:00 There is a very nice trio of chats today on ESPN. (ed: Didn't your teachers tell you to try better than "nice" as a descriptor?) The first is fantasy injuries with Will Carroll at 11AM. That is followed by Jayson Stark at 1PM, and the weekend will be ushered in by a fantasy football chat at 3PM. I typically find one or two pieces of information that is relevent to the giant fantasy mosiac that exists in my mind. I hope those pieces are big enough to merit mention here. The typical disclaimers apply regarding subscriber/non-subscriber access. To enter each chat for non-subscribers, click here for Will Carroll between 11AM and 11:45AM. Here for Jayson Stark between 1:00PM and 1:30 PM (I'm not to sure how long he goes), and here between 3:00PM amd 3:45PM for fantasy football. Insider subscribers can access the content any time after the chat begins.
