Prince - Xpectation [RARE] (2003)Link 2For those of you who grew up in the 80's you may think of Prince as a rock/pop singer as per his Purple Rain album. However, for those of you who listened to Prince album "The Rainbow Children" already KNOW what time it is! This album is super rare. 9 tracks. All HEAT. Did you ever think Prince was capable of taking it to THIS level? I didn't think so, and boy oh boy I couldn't have been more wrong. All track info is in the comment section...

Brandon Fields-Brandon Fields [1994]Brandon Fields Link 2He has such a unique, beautiful yet mysterious and soulful sound and all the songs (the ballads and more uptempo ones) were so accessible yet creatively interesting that I had to have more.If you like smooth jazz, but want to break out of the formulaic mold that most smooth jazz albums have today, this is a great place to start.Brandon Fields-Other Places [1992]Other Places Link 2A talented altoist influenced by David Sanborn, Brandon Fields has the versatility to be able to play both R&B/crossover and hard bop. Fields grew up in Orange County, CA, and started playing alto when he was ten. A freelance musician since he was a teenager, Fields moved to Los Angeles in 1982 and has worked steadily ever since. He toured with George Benson in 1985, was a regular member of the Rippingtons, has long been a busy session player, and recorded CD's as a leader for Nova and Positive.* Another Great DWBass Post *All track info is in th...

The Yellowjackets - Lifecycle [2008]Lifecycle Link 2"Lifecycle" is, in some respects, two albums in one. Seven of the ten tracks are quintet pieces featuring guitarist Mike Stern and the Jackets, while the remaining three are quartet pieces that showcase the individual and collective talents of the current Yellowjackets lineup: keyboardist Russell Ferrante, saxophonist Bob Mintzer, bassist Jimmy Haslip and drummer Marcus Baylor. Whatever the combinations and permutations, it's all good. Mintzer contributes three tracks: the energetic opener, "Falken's Maze," the rhythmically complex "Yahoo," and the easygoing "I Wonder. While Mintzer and Stern tend to stand out on this album, the other members also offer great work, particularly Jimmy Haslip with his fretless bass. The Yellowjackets - Altered State [2006]Altered State Link 2A key to the longevity of The Yellowjackets can be seen in the writing credits on their latest release. Truly a collective enterprise, all four members write in...

Saravah Soul - Saravah Soul (2008)Link 2Exploding out of the rich cultural mix in the melting-pot of London's underground music scene comes the half-Brazilian, half-British, Afro-Brazilian Funk sound of Saravah Soul.Fronted by fiery break dancer Otto Nascarella, the intensity of their live shows has earned them a reputation for wild performances and a rapidly expanding fan base. Now their ground breaking first album (self-titled Saravah Soul) has caused an international stir amongst record labels eager to sign them, and the band seems set on an unstoppable rise to even wider acclaim.* Big ups to Frank Black @ Funk Universum *All track info is in the comment section...

The Heritage Orchestra - The Heritage Orchestra (2006)Link 2First, one must understand that The Heritage Orchestra is truly an orchestra, 45 strong with a deep string section and powerful brass. Mingled inside the orchestral set up lies a jazz rhythm section, with guitar, bass, drums, vibes, keyboards, and other various instruments. Unlike an unbalanced mesh of two completely different styles (e.g. Trans-Siberian Orchestra), this group manages to mix jazz and classical music perfectly, where the modern rhythm section does not dominate the strings or vice versa. They truly play like one group, a remarkable achievement for the wide variety of instruments played at the same time. Personal favorite is "Sky Breaks," a 10-minute whirlwind of classical jazz synergy that would soothe the savage beast. This here is HEAT people...don't sleep! All track info is in the comment section...

Jeff Lorber - Shades Of Soul [2004]Shades Link 2Shades Of Soul is the brainchild of Jeff Lorber, and collaborators Nathaniel Phillips and Marlon McClain from the Dazz Band. I had expected this CD as far back as 2000 on the Major Hits label, and even earlier. The project was halted following the sad, untimely passing of Art Porter who recorded some jams with Jeff prior to his accident.Thankfully this album has now seen the light of day and I think that there will be something on it for everybody. It isn't as essential as I had hoped, but it is not as bland and twee as Jeff's recent sets which have fallen into the trap that is 'smoothjazz'. I think that Jeff Lorber is more at home with the funkier side of jazz and he really excels at the smoother side of soul. His previous works with James Robinson, Karyn White, Michael Jeffries and Benét have been outstanding in many ways, and I hope that this set sees a trend back to this style of work. This funkiness continues with the OK "Get Wid...

Michael White - The X Factor [1978]X Factor Link 2Beautiful work from Michael White -- one of the few musicians who can actually make us love the sound of the violin in jazz! White's working here in a style that's very much in line with some of the post-Coltrane spiritual soul jazz in Impulse in the early 70s -- an approach that's free-thinking, yet never as far outside as some of the avant work on the label during the 60s.Still relatively unknown nearing the end of the 1970s, this talented violinist turned to George Duke to produce, arrange and hopefully reach some ears. The result for the most part is enjoyable but unremarkable jazz-pop-soul. On tunes like "The Red Planet," though, he's right there with the glory days of Mahavishnu Orchestra and Billy Cobham. It suggests what might have been for White before Jean-Luc Ponty staked out the high ground on the jazz violin landscape. "Love Call" is another all time favorite of mine.Michael White - Go With The Flow [1974]Flow Link 2...

G-Fire-G-Fire [2003]G-Fire Link 2What happens when you put four very talented guitarists together who have recorded, toured with and produced for some of the music industry's most legendary names? You get fire, G-Fire! This creative summer jazz/fusion album includes four of the most accomplished guitarists out there today, each in their own right. Longtime guitarist friends Morris O'Connor (Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight), Kevin Chokan (Diana Ross, Jeffery Osborne) and Miguel Mega (Brazilian jazz sensation), have teamed up on G-Fire with Boosweet Records CEO/producer Vernon Neilly (Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Teena Marie). These professionals have respectively lent their own sounds and guitar mastery to showcase their talents. G-Fire (Guitars On Fire) is one of the most compelling and diverse musical projects that has been recorded in some time and one that will take you on a musical journey of smooth jazz, jazz/fusion, and blues that encompasses many more exotic styles, such as salsa a...

Jeff Lorber-He Had a Hat [2007]Link 2The Jeff Lorber Fusion's 1970s grooves were hip enough for Nelly to sample them on his 2003 "Pimp Juice" remix. On Lorber's latest CD, the Philly-born keyboardist delivers some of his trademark funk, albeit with musical twists, and a slew of guests from saxophonists Kirk Whalum and Tom Scott, guitarist Russell Malone, and trumpeter Chris Botti to the horns from Blood, Sweat & Tears. His smooth-jazz fans will dig Lorber's lovely rendition of Bill Wither's "Grandma's Hands," graced with Eric Benet's impassioned vocal, and "The Other Side of the Heart," the quiet storm duet with Benet and Holly Cole. But, like a few of his contemporaries, Lorber unplugs and takes to the acoustic ivories on the orchestral, Aaron Copeland-esque overture "Anthem for a New America." He increases his swing cred on the Gil Evans-ghosted "Surreptitious" and "BC Bop" and proves that some smooth stars still have a little hard bop left in them.Jeff Lorber - Flipside...

With Victor Bailey replacing Jackson, Metro finally re-emerges with Metrocafe, an eclectic effort that blends Loeb's keen pop-rock sensibilities with Forman's obvious love for both elegant piano jazz and retro-funk and blues. The graceful, film score-like "House and Home" features Loeb's eloquent acoustic subtlety ...

Hiram Bullock - Carrasco [1997]Hiram Bullock steps out a little from his usual jazz fusion and works his magic on a few remakes such as Earth, Wind & Fire's "Can't Hide Love" and Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing," which is a personal favorite. Most remakes of classics are never executed very well, but Hiram flipped these songs and continued to keep the HEAT that the originals contained.Hiram Bullock - From All Sides [1986]Hiram Bullock - Too Funky 2 Ignore [2006]Over the course of his career ? from his run with the Brecker Brothers to various stints as a hired gun for everyone from Gil Evans and David Sanborn to Miles Davis ? Hiram Bullock has earned a reputation as a bona fide guitar hero. Known best as a giant of jazz fusion, Bullock has been developing his skills as a songwriter all along. Casiopea - Signal [2006]Casiopea is a Japanese jazz fusion band that was formed in 1976 by guitarist Issei Noro and bassist Tetsuo Sakurai. In 1977, keyboardist Minoru Mukaiya and drummer Takashi Sasaki joined the group. The group debuted with the album Casiopea in 1979, and 30 albums or more have since been released. In 1980, the drummer seat is replaced by Akira Jimbo. The album Eyes of the Mind was released in the United States in 1981. They then released the album Mint Jams in 1982, followed by Four by Four in the same year, which is a collaborative album with some of Fourplay members including Lee Ritenour, Harvey Mason, Nathan East and Don Grusin. Their first foreign concert was held in the United Kingdom in 1983. The group has toured Europe, South America, Australia, and Southeast Asia. In 1989, Akira Jimbo and Tetsuo Sakurai left the band following several years of musical differences. They named their own band, Jimsaku. For the replacement, the group chose Yoshihiro Naruse ...

Tetsuo Sakurai - Gate of the 21st Century [2003]Although he was heavily influences by jazz artists such as Chick Corea, The Weather Report, and Herbie Hancock; Tetsuo Sakurai does not call himself a jazz musician. In fact, he refuses to do so. What you will experience from listening to this album is a lot of jazz fused with rock and funk at times. Certainly ideal HEAT for those of us who need a break from the smooth jazz flow and need for things to get a little crazy...Tetsuo Sakurai - Gentle Hearts[Import][2001] Link 2Ex-Casiopea bassist presents his power trio album with Dennis Chambers (Graffiti) and Greg Howe.Tetsuo Sakurai was the bass player in the japanese fusion band Casiopea and he has a lot of experience. Metro-Express [2007]With the release of their sixth CD, Express , the band Metro celebrates fourteen years of musical collaboration and exploration based on their shared passion for the sonic and musical adventures of the 60 s and 70 s; when artists such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Weather Report and John McLaughlin s Mahavishnu Orchestra began combining jazz, rock, electronica and world music, thus expanding the boundaries of all of improvised music. Express is a continuation in this direction, or genre, which has come to be known as Fusion . Having crossed paths during their early years in New York City in recording sessions and the local club scene, pianist/keyboardist Mitchel Forman and guitarist Chuck Loeb soon found themselves sharing the stage as members of the Stan Getz Group in the early 1980 s. But it wasn t until 1994, after touring and recording with the Bill Evan s groundbreaking Petite Blonde project, that they joined forces with drummer Wolfgang Haffn...

Features all-star cast of underground icons, Toshinori Kondo, Bill Laswell, Eraldo Bernocchi, Hamid Drake, DJ Disk and Aiyb Dieng. The soulful, jazzy horns from Toshinori Kondo that carry the tunes on this disc sound as if they could have been written for the Blade Runner soundtrack. Toshi's horns blend perfectly with Bill Laswell's Bass and excellent beats to make this a perennial go-to favorite in my music collection. Stanley Clarke - The Toys Of Men [2007]It has been somewhat of a frustrating run for fans of uber-bassist Stanley Clarke's legendary, genre-defining '70s work. After establishing himself as the world's premier four-string jazz-rock maestro with his work in Return to Forever and solo albums such as School Days, Clarke altered his focus by churning out middling commercial funk pop and soundtracks. They diluted his status as a talented musician whose fleet-fingered style and elaborate picking technique influenced a generation of bass players. But he's back now, with an anti-war-propelled set that is an encouraging and convincing return to form. The opening 11-minute, six-part suite, featuring fiery fiddle from the intriguingly named Mads Tolling, sounds like prime-era Mahavishnu Orchestra, and also highlights Clarke's frantic yet precise staccato technique on his instrument. It alone is worth the price of this disc, but the remaining dozen tracks emphasize Clarke's intentions to ...

George Duke - I Love The Blues,She Heard Me Cry [1975]The list of heavyweights who join George Duke on 1975's I Love the Blues: She Heard My Cry is impressive -- some of the participants include Johnny "Guitar" Watson, singer Flora Purim, percussionist Airto Moreira, guitarist Lee Ritenour, drummer Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, and guitarist George Johnson (of Brothers Johnson fame). With such a cast, one would expect this 1975 LP to be outstanding, which it isn't. But it's a respectable effort that thrives on diversity. The highlights of this album range from decent fusion instrumentals, like "That's What She Said," "Giant Child Within Us-Ego," and "Sister Serene," to the mellow soul ballad "Someday" and the Jimi Hendrix-like heavy metal/hard rock offering "Rokkinrowl," which finds Duke singing lead and contains some of Ritenour's more forceful playing. Meanwhile, Duke and Watson perform a vocal duet on the title song, which is the only 12-bar blues number on the album. In 1975, some...

Jean-Luc Ponty - The Acatama Experience [2007]The French violinist Jon-Luc Ponty broke barriers as a sideman with Frank Zappa and the Mahavishnu Orchestra and with his own critically acclaimed recordings for over four decades. This is his first studio recording in some time, and it was inspired by a visit to Chile's Acatama desert. Ponty's laser-like violin -- whether acoustic or electric -- is at home on all of the CD's 14 smooth-jazz, Latin, and world music tracks. Ponty stirs the stylistic pot with drums, keyboard, and percussion, along with two guitar gods: his homeboy Philipe Catherine and the British master Alan Holdsworth. Bud Powell's bebop classic "Parisian Thoroughfare" is upgraded with a snappy hip-hop arrangement, while "Back in the 60s" and "Still in Love" swing with Spanish Harlem syncopations. "Desert Crossing" is Ponty's stunning solo statement, just to let you know that he's not all about fusion fun and games.Jean-Luc Ponty - Cosmic Messenger [1978]This CD has...
