Jeju Folk Village (part 2)
2007-04-04 16:13:00 Jeju Island is associated with a distinctive type of statue carved from lava. Throughout Korea, the figure of the Dol hareubang ("stone grandfather") is immediately recognizable as the symbol of Jejudo. In olden times, the statues were seen as gods that granted fertility and protected the island's inhabitants against demons. Today, Korean grocers use them to advertise Jeju oranges, one of the resources for which the island is famous.Island residents would place Dol hareubangs outside their homes for protection. A phone-booth in the image of the Dol hareubang! Isn't anything sacred these days? Restaurants with covered outdoor seating. A blacksmith at work in her shop. The village boasts a beautiful maze garden with pink rose bushes. Lava rocks. Cherry blossoms!

2007-04-03 09:30:00 Despite the rainy weather during the Fulbright conference on Jeju, we managed to do some site-seeing on Sunday. Our first stop was Jeju Folk Village Museum, which replicates a nineteenth-century island town. Yours truly at the front gate. Yours truly, posing in front of a full-sized model ship. A souvenir stand near the front gate. Many different plants grow in the village. Wooden sculptures on display in a craftsman's shop. Steve and Ashley enjoy the swings.

Jeju Cactus Chocolate
2007-03-25 04:49:00 Jeju is a volcanic island south of Korea known as the "Hawaii of Korea". It has a temperate climate and is most famous for its oranges, which everyone in Korea raves about. We had a chance to visit Jeju-do during the beginning of our time in Korea. You may remember our "wonderful" hotel room in Seogwipo, our trip to Hyeopjae Beach next to Hallim Park, and our visit to Jeju-si, Central Jeju.Anyways, Jeju also makes some famous chocolate, one of them known to many as Jeju cactus chocolate. Cactus in chocolate?? Yeah, you got that right. According to one website, "Jeju cactus chocolate is made with cactus powder through vacuum lyophilization (I didn't know what that meant either) of Jeju cactus. It adds nutritive substance to deep and tender chocolate taste."I've eaten this chocolate a few times now, mostly received as a gift from students and one time a lady from our bank. Jeju Island...arriving in Seogwipo
2006-08-28 08:21:02 The first step to Jeju was to take the subway to Gimpo International Airport, which was only eight stops away from Omokgyo, the closest subway station to our place.Once we got to Gimpo, we checked in, got our tickets, waited for an hour, then took our 50 minute flight on Asiana Airlines to Jeju International Airport. Once we arrived in Jejusi, we took a "bus limosine" #600 to Seogwipo (the southern city on Jeju) which took about an hour and thirty minutes. This bus makes stops at all the major hotels along the way so it took a while. My 20GB iPod helped us pass the time.Once we arrived in Seogwipo, the moment we stepped off the bus we ran into a couple from work! It was really weird, we knew they were going to Jeju but it was so random to see them!Ok...this is where it gets interesting. Get ready. Jeju Island...venturing to Jejusi (central)
2006-08-28 08:21:02 So we decided to spend our last night in Jejusi, the central city on Jeju Island in the north. We were closer to the airport so waking up for our morning flight would be easier.We took another bus ride and this time after getting dropped off we were on the hunt for a hotel. After asking a local (who happened to speak English) about where to stay, she recommended that we try exploring down the side street where we were dropped off. We found Wind and Sand, a nice hotel that cost us 50,000w/night. This time around, our room was very clean and tidy--score!We ventured to Iho Beach and relaxed there for a while. Afterwards we went back to Jejusi and explored the area. The next day we had to wake up and say good bye to Jeju.So all in all, our trip to Jeju was nice, but the lack of planning and preparation showed. We decided on this trip last minute and unfortunately the weather did not cooperate. Oh well, you win some and you lose some. Time to head back to Mokdong and continue to document...
Jeju Island...Seogwipo part deux
2006-08-28 08:21:02 I worked six years at the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort and Devante worked four years at the Hotel Grand Pacific and the benefits included staying at other luxury hotels (Delta is part of the Fairmont chain) at a staff rate of $49 or $59cdn. All we were looking for was something that was clean. However, this was not the case--oops!So...after waking up from our so called "hotel" we proceeded to catch a bus to Hyeopjae beach, a white, sandy beach. The weather was sunny with some minor cloud cover when we left Seogwipo.After a one hour and twenty minute bus ride (at 5000w each), we arrived. Hyeopjae beach is located right next to Hallim Park. We got to the beach and the water was blue-ish and the sand was nice, but in the distance storm clouds started coming our way. It started sprinkling and then quickly it became a torrential downpour!
