Obama and the false war of generational dynamics
2007-11-24 23:21:00
Pundits are much like birds flocking south for the winter…they travel in large groups, directed a certain way by a few leaders that twist this way and that, directing the rest of the flock to follow. It seems that if you watch the flock, it looks like they have no idea which way they’re going, so willy-nilly and arbitrary are their changes of direction. And so it is that this week we get no fewer than four distinct flocks flying around this week, each one presenting a very different directional tilt on the topic of whether or not Barack Obama is a candidate for “Generation X,” the “Millenial” generation, both, neither, or something totally different. First we have Andrew Sullivan’s “Goodbye To All That,” which paints Obama as a post-Baby Boomer messiah that can deliver the country from the Boomer struggles that are still being fought today through proxies. Iraq isn’t about Iraq, Sullivan argues, but about Vietnam and the c...

The media’s dereliction of duty in the Jena 6 case (UPDATED)

From Sister Toldjah. An example of “Professional Journalistic Filter”, I’m gonna be using this phrase for a few days, LOL! There has been much written about the happenings in Jena, Louisiana, a town that few people outside of the direct area had ever heard of. Bryant Purvis and Carwin Jones, two of the 'Jena 6' where out at the BET Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta this past weekend. The pair were on hand to present the Hip Hop Video of the Year [which went to Kanye West]. Clearly they were hooked up with a stylist and swag, but best of all they were able to speak on the injustice. I'm glad they are getting some shine and support from the Hip Hop community. [Kristy Smith, a freshman nursing student at Monroe College in Louisiana].A group of white Louisiana college students dressed in blackface and reenacted the "Jena 6" assault while a friend snapped photos and videotaped the staged attack, images that were later posted to one of the participant's Facebook page.In the video, three students with mud smeared across their bodies stomp on a fourth student, while two of the participants are heard to say, "Jena 6." One man can also be heard saying, "Niggers put the noose on." After the video and photos on Smith's page were discovered by fellow students, she removed the material and made her Facebook page private.Smith, who did not respond to a TSG e-mail sent to her school address, apologized for the images in several recent Facebook postings. "We were just playin n the mud and it got out of hand. I promise i'm not racist. i have just as many black friends as i do white. And i love them to death," she wrote. She added in a later message t...
Jena 6: No Noose is Good Noose
2007-10-02 19:36:00
A new Jena 6 "rally" for kindergarten students - supposed to teach them about racism - found a grandmother putting a noose around her granddaughter's neck to teach that dirty, little bitch a lesson! Oh wait, it was to show her what it feels like to have a noose around her neck. Wait - I think it was to, um, oh! Yeah, it was to show a kindergartener what being lynched feels like. Because we all know what a big problem lynching is these days.Do you remember the famous Psych experiment with the young children, where they separated the kids with green eyes from the ones with brown and then encouraged the children to basically discriminate against one another based on these differences? I don't know that it is effective with kids so young, but the concept behind the experiment was directly applicable to modern society: it shows that something as slight as the color of one's eyes can be used as the grounds for discrimination. That happens - that happens in the real world on an ev...

2007-09-28 14:16:00
GREAT news on the Jena 6 case. 17 year-old Mychal Bell has been released on bail. His bail was set at $45,000. The LaSalle Parish District Attorney said his decision not to appeal was not influenced by the recent march. (YEA RIGHT OF COURSE THERE WAS INFLUENCE THERE, THEY GO DOWN PLAYING IT,) ?We still have mountains to climb, but at least this is closer to an even playing field,? said the Rev. Al Sharpton, who helped organize last week?s protest. ?He goes home because a lot of people left their home and stood up for him,? Sharpton said. District Attorney Reed Walters? decision to abandon adult charges means that Bell, who had faced a maximum of 15 years in prison on his aggravated second-degree battery conviction last month, instead could be held only until he turns 21 if he is found guilty in juvenile court. Al Sharpton. But Bell's case is far from over: he's due back in court next week. The prosecution of Bell, one of the black teenagers known as the Jena Six, led to a massive civil rights demonstration last week, bringing activists Sharpton, the Rev. One Small Victory in Jena 6, Bell Released on Bail
2007-09-28 02:42:00
Mychal Bell has been released on bail after the DA has agreed to not appeal the appellate courts decision to over turn his original conviction and move the case to juvenile court...a small victory in a long war against injustice!Mychal Bell's release on $45,000 bail came hours after a prosecutor confirmed he will no longer seek an adult trial for the 17-year-old. Bell, one of the teenagers known as the Jena Six, still faces trial as a juvenile in the December beating in this small central Louisiana town."We still have mountains to climb, but at least this is closer to an even playing field," said the Rev. Al Sharpton, who helped organize last week's protest."He goes home because a lot of people left their home and stood up for him," Sharpton said. Reed Walters - Jena 6 DA's NY TImes Op-ED Show Race Bias Applied To Law
2007-09-27 20:32:00
Reed Walters -- the district attorney in the Jena 6 case -- wrote a most unfortunate op-ed in today's New York Times. He may have thought he was explaining his position, but he really opened a can of worms. Aside from admiting he a "small-town lawyer" he also wrote this...I cannot overemphasize how abhorrent and stupid I find the placing of the nooses on the schoolyard tree in late August 2006. If those who committed that act considered it a prank, their sense of humor is seriously distorted. It was mean-spirited and deserves the condemnation of all decent people. But it broke no law. I searched the Louisiana criminal code for a crime that I could prosecute. There is none. A DA can find some law to prosecute if he or she wants to. My first thought was Reed Walters could have charged the noose-hangers with Disturbing the Peace, which they certainly did. To determine why he didn't do this, I called the office. The receptionist said she would relay my message to him. His office...

Picture of Mychal BellI know I have ignored this huge story simply because I've been real busy, but better late than never. I just wanted to post an update and a link where you can sign the petition, if you'd like.Mychal Bell, the sole defendant who remains behind bars from the group of teens known as the ?Jena 6,? will not be released Friday, a court decided.Bell, 17, has been in jail since his arrest more than nine months ago. When asked why he sent the photo in he responded to CNN with, ?People need to see this. Let me first say, I know that this is a long post. I just hope that some will read it entirely.America is working to build a wall at the border of Mexico, to keep illegal immigrants out. My question to the wall being built is this. Just who will build the wall?We hire Mexicans to build our homes, upkeep our lawns, work in our Agriculture fields, clean our homes and even baby sit our children.Maybe with the health care proposal Hillary Clinton has on the table, if she is elected President. Maybe some want mind so much about Mexicans being in America. Thanks to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, California and Texas that once belong to Mexico, was signed over to America, including New Mexico. I said this to point out how America is supposed to be a country of immigrants. My Great Grandmother was a Creek Indian. I am not going to lecture the fact that America belongs to the Indians and the fact that they are not complaining about Mexicans or anyone else being in this country. How i...

I should have spent a little more time researching on Snopes.com before posting before; I missed some good shit. Turns out the Jena 6 include some hardened criminals in their number. Lets recap first:The "Jena 6" attack took place on 4 December 2006 at the high school. During a fight that broke out in the lunchroom between a white student and a black student, the white student was hit from behind, knocked out, then set upon by other black students who proceeded to kick and stomp his "lifeless" body as he lay unconscious on the floor. The victim, Justin Barker, spent about three hours in an emergency room being treated for injuries to his head and face.According to Snopes.com "Two of the Jena 6 defendants had been part of the threesome involved in the Gotta-Go Grocery incident, which is why their bonds were significantly higher: the bonds so assigned covered both sets of charges"The Gotta-go Grocery incident was when several black Jena students....wait for it.....robbed and beat u...

Jena 6 corners the Dems
2007-09-23 11:12:00
by Stan Goff Ive always said that three Ps will make the Democratic Party nervous as the sheep of Wellington: patriarchy, Palestine, and prison. These are the issues they dont want to acknowledge because their complicity on all counts is so intractibly deep. The Jena 6 uprising is the reaction of one of the most consistent and abused core consitutencies of the Democratic Party African America, which has been held hostage by the 2-Party 2-Step for decades, and kept in line by a lengthening list of Black gatekeepers who act as colonial surrogates. Prison is the issue that comes to the surface with the Jena 6 focus on the aptly named US criminal justice system. We have the highest prison population (more than 2 million) on earth, even exceeding that of China (1.5 million) which is one in 800 people. Ours is one in 150. Black and brown folk are the VAST majority of that population, and the conditions in many of these lockups are utterly inhuman. Here is a recent pi...

Riddle Me This: No Law for Students but 2 Arrested?
2007-09-22 00:07:00
First, in a disheartening update to the Jena 6 Case, Mychal Bell is still in jail, after 9 months, and has been denied bail or bond...A judge on Friday denied a request to release a teenager whose arrest in the beating of a white classmate sparked this week's civil rights protest in Louisiana.Mychal Bell is one of the group known as the ?Jena Six.? His request to be freed while an appeal is being reviewed was rejected at a juvenile court hearing, effectively denying him any chance at immediate bail, a person familiar with the case told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because juvenile court proceedings are closed.Earlier, Bell's mother emerged from the hearing in tears, refusing to comment. [SOURCE]Now, riddle me this, the DA in Jena says that the students that hung nooses from the school-yard tree could not be charged because there were no laws but last night, 2 men in Alexandria, La. were arrest for hanging nooses from a truck and circling protest...
Injustice and the "Jena 6"
2007-09-21 22:16:00
I know I've been out of the loop a bit lately. All apologies. I work. This one has momentarily drawn me to the old keyboard. Most of you by now know of the "Jena 6." These six black teens are charged with attempted murder for almost killing a white student in a brutal beating. Now we see swarms of protesters marching the streets demanding these goons be set free. Add a dash of Al Sharpton and you have newsday gold it seemsThe fact that I have to break down the "why" in this is deafeningly sad.Previously some white students did hang nooses in the town. It was obviously a deplorable thing to do. There is nothing that could be done to condone so ignorant an action. On December 4, about three months after the nooses were discovered, six teens, dubbed the Jena 6, were accused of beating classmate Justin Barker. The six -- Mychal Bell, Robert Bailey Jr., Carwin Jones, Bryant Purvis, Theo Shaw and Jesse Ray Beard -- were originally charged with attempted second-degree murder and conspiracy...

Thousands in Protest Rally for Jena 6
2007-09-21 18:03:00
In MY opinion, this case is not black and white, it's gray, my readers and therein lies the heart of the problem. Where was this school's classes on racial tolerance? From what I have read, they have done nothing to attempt to soothe the pot of boiling racial tension that culminated in the beating of Justin Barker. In no way am I justifying the Jena Six's appalling behavior. In fact, I think they SHOULD serve some time in a juvenile detention facility as well as be made to attend anger management and racial tolerance classes. But jailed for attempted murder? uh-uh. This is an excessively trumped-up, racially-motivated charge that I don't blame all of these protesters for screaming about one little bit. READ ABOUT THIS HEREPractice non-violence in your lives. You will be leaving your children a beautiful legacy.
‘Jena 6′ Case Exposes The Justice System Of The United States F
2007-09-21 12:38:00
The case touched a nerve deep within the black community, says Leonard Steinhorn, professor of communication at American University in Washington, D.C. “There’s a sense that parts of the judicial system still remain anchored in the bigoted attitudes of old and that a black person can’t get fair or true justice. Source: The Christian Monitor   As a mainly black country, Barbados should be very interested in the recent events in the United States where accusations are rife that six black boys have been treated unfairly by the US justice system. Blacks in the USA feel vindicated that here is another case which exposes the “subterranean” racism which remains simmering just below the surface of the greatest democracy on the planet. It seems like only yesterday we witnessed the great Martin Luther King leading the struggle which eventually saw the capitulation of the white supremacist system, which was institutionalized mainly in the South of the Unit...
