Orioles choose Jeremy Guthrie as opening-day starter; Marlins go with Mark
2008-03-23 02:46:00 For Jeremy Guthrie and Mark Hendrickson, Saturday was unforgettable. And it had nothing to do with the rain in Florida that wiped out four games. The Baltimore Orioles chose Guthrie to start on opening day, giving the prestigious assignment to a pitcher with just 26 major league starts and seven wins. Read the full story. ...

Jeremy Guthrie 2008 Projection
2007-10-23 21:52:00 I've changed my stance on Jeremy Guthrie many times. First he looked like a low-BABIP fluke to me. Then I watched him pitch several times and started to believe. Then I questioned what I'd seen when he was lousy in August and September. Who's the real Jeremy Guthrie? Is he a mixed league sleeper? In his 2007 rookie season, Guthrie posted a 3.70 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP in 175.3 innings. That included a low hit rate of 8.5 per nine, too many HRs at 1.18 per nine, an average K rate at 6.3 per nine, and very good control at 2.4 per nine. Just a quick glance at the BABIP and HR/flyball numbers tells us his hit rate should climb while his HR/9 drops a bit. And the pinpoint control doesn't seem sustainable. Even if Guthrie pitched the exact same in 2007 I would expect the results to be a 4.15 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. This would no doubt please the Orioles, but it would also make him a neutral-value mixed league player. The only place he migh...

Jeremy Guthrie and Shaun Marcum--Which do You Trade?
2007-08-21 15:30:00 I had both players at one point, and traded one for Brad Wilkerson. Here is a look at these two surprising pitchers. Talk about trading lemons and cherries. Earlier this year due to two free agent acquisitions I found myself with both Jeremy Guthrie and Shaun Marcum. Certainly this was a happy problem. I felt that my AL offense still needed beefing up, but didn't have any real desire for a big
ESPN Zone Reflections: Jeremy Guthrie
2007-07-25 17:33:00 On a wonderful afternoon on Tuesday, fans got to meet amazing rookie sensation Jeremy Guthrie, as he held a Q&A & autopgraph session at the ESPN Zone in Baltimore's Inner Harbor on Tuesday.Much like the rest of the events at the ESPN Zone, yesterday was especially packed, as fans decked in black and orange jammed the restaurant. There was a standing room only crowd in the facility as Jeremy questions from fans about the Orioles and also off the field items.I will say, until this season I didn't know much about Jeremy Guthrie aside from he being a former first round draft pick; however, for those who did not attend the event, you missed out on something good.If you match MASN or hear the radio broadcasts, everyone goes on and on about Guthrie, not only as a pitcher, but as a person. I sort of knew what to expect, but I even came off more impressed with him not only as a ballplayer, but an all-around person. There are not too many athletes who I can say that about. In addition to ...

Cleveland castoff Jeremy Guthrie shines for Orioles
2007-06-29 22:06:00 It’s an hour before game time, and Baltimore Orioles rookie Jeremy Guthrie is standing on the first-base line doling out autographs. A teenager thrusts forward a baseball card that trumpets Guthrie as a 2004 prospect with Cleveland. The pitcher politely informs the youth that he does not sign items depicting him in an Indians uniform, and ...

A Look At Jeremy Guthrie
2007-06-19 04:22:00 I've mentioned Jeremy Guthrie in various Waiver Wired articles, but he certainly merits his own post here at RotoAuthority. The 28 year-old righty has become an important figure in Baltimore's rotation with a sparkling 2.57 ERA and 0.92 WHIP through 73.2 innings. Guthrie has won only three games but Expected Wins shows that he should have five. As a former first-round pick of the Tribe, Guthrie throws four pitches known more for command than being nasty. Part of the reason he's 28 now is that he was on a Mormon mission for a while. Baseball America says the Stanford product is a thinker out there on the mound. Here are his numbers as a starter: 63.1 innings9 starts7.04 IP/start1.71 ERA0.77 WHIP5.40 K/91.28 BB/94.22 K/BB5.68 H/90.43 HR/9 By now you know what to look for to spot someone due for major regression. Unfortunately Guthrie fits the bill by combining a below average strikeout rate with a microscopic hit rate. When success rests on hits allowe...

Jeremy Guthrie (P-BAL)
2007-04-14 03:05:00 Guthrie is expected to start for the Orioles on Sunday in place of the injured Jaret Wright. Manager Sam Perlozzo has not named Guthrie the starter as Guthrie will be available in relief the next couple of days if necessary. Guthrie would have a favorable matchup on Sunday against the Royals, if he starts.
