Jerry Falwell, Jr., endorses Mike Huckabee
2007-11-30 15:35:00
More on God's chosen one, Mike Huckabee. The worm-eaten apple doesn't fall far from the tree... Jerry Falwell, Jr., son of recently departed Jerry Falwell, Sr., no doubt received a lot of divine inspiration before deciding to throw his support behind Huckabee, as reported by Fox News on Wednesday. Here's Huckabee's reaction: The former Arkansas governor and Baptist pastor said Wednesday that prayer has played a big role in his recent polling success. "It defies all explanation, confounds the pundits and I'm enjoying every minute of them trying to figure it out, and until they look at it (as) just experience beyond human they'll never figure out and that's honestly why it's happening," said Huckabee, who appeared with Falwell. Asked if he was saying God is responsible for his surge, Huckabee said he was only referring to prayer: "When people pray, things happen. ... I'm not saying God wants me to be elected. The last time I checked (God) hadn't registered in any of the sta...

Anti-gay Activist Jerry Falwell Dead at 73He blamed gays and lesbians for the 9/11 terrorist attacks and made himself a household name by claiming Teletubbie Tinky Winky was gay, and now, the founder of the Moral Majority, the Rev. Ron Godwin, Liberty University's executive vice president, told the Associated Press Falwell had been found unresponsive in his office at around 10:45 a.m. and was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. Falwell founded the Moral Majority in 1979 and became the face of the religious right in the 1980s. He later founded the conservative Liberty University and served as the school?s chancellor. Rev. Jerry Falwell Dead at 73; "Religious Right" and "Moral Majority" to Fo
2007-05-16 11:10:00
For a "liberal" media, I'm already quite stunned by the impressive and immense media coverage dedicated to Rev. Jerry Falwell's death.Though I am personally and politically biased, Rev. Falwell represented very little to my own perception of what America is about.  I believe in a country rooted in religious tolerance, which offers the citizenry not only the right to practice religion, but choose not to as well.  I believe in a country that should practice democracy, and less theocracy.I believe in a country where morals are to be accepted and practiced by the citizenry, not determined by rich, politically-fueld pastors and members of the clergy. But those are only my own personal beliefs regarding America.  Rev. Falwell clearly had his own perception, which clearly identified with America's "moral majority" and "religious right."  But is Rev. Falwell's death a precursor to the already-fading "religious right" as well?  Ever since the last national electio...

Of course, I?m not quite sure that your idea and his about what climate he?ll find at that reward is the same, but thanks anyway. And, Lord, thank you for taking one who was so careful to evenly distribute his bigotry and prejudice and wishes for eternal damnation across the spectrum of those created in Your image?the Gay, the Muslim, the Democrat, well, hell..er, I mean, heck?Lord, just about anyone who wasn?t a white, male, Republican, and Southern Baptist. It will be hard to fill his shoes here, Lord, but there are many waiting in the wings ready to grab his mantle. I don?t think he got the memo about you loving all your creatures, but no man is perfect, so we hope you will forgive him if he left anyone out of his diatribe of intolerance in Your name. How did Jerry Falwell affect the political landscape?
2007-05-16 07:13:00
Like most on the left, I can't say I will miss Jerry Falwell, the founder of the 'Moral Majority,' who died today at the age of 73. Most of what you will read about him is true. Even people prone to exaggeration probably won't have to go too far to find plenty to write about him. One thing that is undeniably true-- Falwell was an obdurate segregationist most of his life, and only changed when segregation was so far gone that it could no longer be defensible to be in favor of it. They needed a new vehicle and they found it. But it is not true that the 'Moral Majority' coalesced out of nowhere, as it seemed to when Falwell founded it in 1979 and claimed Jimmy Carter as its first victim a year later. I remember talking to a black minister back about 1980, and the topic of the 'Moral Majority' came up, and his observation was simple but powerful-- 'same old segregationists, new packaging.' As recently as the 1980's Falwell preached against interracial marriage and even at t...

Jerry Falwell Dies
2007-05-16 04:16:00
Today Jerry Falwell, founder of Moral Majority, died at age 73. I'm not going to publically cheer his death, but I will be frank about my feelings on this. In the 1980's Falwell was the face of the Christian Conservative movement. That mantle has since passed to people like James Dobson, but, in his time, Falwell did more to hurt America's civil liberties than anyone else. With his insistence on mixing fundamental Christianity with politics and his demonization of entire segments of society, Falwell's crusade seriously undermined the Constitution, tried to return our society to the Middle Ages, and helped spread "acceptable" forms of hate through his homophobia and dislike for non-Christians. I don't wish death on anyone. I know this life we have is the only one we've got, so everyone's time on Earth is precious. However, I will certainly not miss Falwell and America is better off without him. Good riddance.Black Sun Journal has more on what Falwell did to harm Americ...

Jerry Falwell is dead R.I.P.
2007-05-16 02:20:00
I remember watching him in the early eighties and finding his anti-communism and pro-traditional values interesting. He avoided personal scandal and I'm sure he was sincere in his beliefs and a nice man. I won't say that I agree with everything he said, especially his reported exaggerations on homosexuals, the always unwise and mostly off-putting apocalyptic messages, and the assigning of blame for disasters, specific diseases, and such on God's anger. Anyways, he said some things that made sense and saw the cultural situation as one would see a war, connecting the dots between the anti-Christian beliefs, the left, and politics. Oh, and he was right about Tinky Winky.

?AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals??If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being??God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve??[homosexuals are] brute beasts...part of a vile and satanic system [that] will be utterly annihilated, and there will be a celebration in heaven.??I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. He was 73. Without even bothering to look, I’m sure we’re about to see a lot of totally vile comments coming from the usual suspects. His stewardship was not without it’s problems, as even I have noted here several times.  Frankly, however, I consider anyone who can so unravel and un-nerve the left, to be a complete success.   Addendum:  (David L) Allahpundit, Hot Air, has done the leg work and has summary of the left’s reaction.  It is not pretty. Jerry Falwell, founder of the Moral Majority, Liberty University, and a Christian conservative leader, has died after being found unconscious this morning.Falwell has been in the middle of a variety of controversies in recent years. Days after the September 11th attacks, Falwell said that abortion activists, gays, and the ACLU were partly responsible. In 1999, he became a symbol of the crusade against the Teletubbies after an article in the National Liberty Journal suggested the character Tinky Winky was homosexual. John McCain once called Falwell an "agent of intolerance," though he has recently backed away from the comments. The increased political power and influence of the religious right is due in large part to the leadership of men like Falwell and Pat Robertson.Falwell was 73 years old.

I happened to see an Internet post that Jerry Falwell was admitted to the hospital and hoped that -- actually thought he was going to come out OK. I guess I'm so used to having him around as part of the American Culture that the idea he could pass on was foreign to me. Well, Rev. Falwell passed on. Now, I'm not a fan of his as he was a massive supporter of President Regan. Moreover, I at first saw him as anti-Black because of his rhetoric and the racist habits of the 80s in the South. But when I write that, I mean I wasn't a fan of his poltiics. I actually came to see him as a person that was actually someone I'd like to meet. This view was cemented when I saw him on a CNN roundtable of ministers, some Black and others White, with Al Sharpton as one of the others. The discussions were not argumentative and indeed, interesting. And it was during that program that I came to see Rev. Falwell as actually quite right in that he had a powerful belief in the Lord. It's quite ap...

Jerry Falwell Exits The Planet

Televangelist Rev. Jerry Falwell has died. The 73-year-old Falwell was found "unconscious" in his Lynchburg, Virginia office this morning. Falwell started Liberty University there. He's had heart issues over the years. As founder of the Moral Majority, Falwell wielded immense political influence in the 1980s by marshaling his Christians to elect Ronald Reagan and Bush 41. He was a canny communicator and adept at spinning the media. I lived in Lynchburg for a year and a half in the late 90s. I recall Falwell's 1999 rant over the BBC kiddie show Teletubbies. Falwell was convinced the purple "Tinky Winky" character was gay. Newt Gingrich is this weekend's Liberty University commencement speaker. A somber event now, much like the "bittersweet" Virginia Tech graduation ceremonies, said Falwell's right hand man during today's press conference. Falwell was talking about the future just this a.m. at breakfast. Hustler porn publisher Larry Flynt said he hated him for years (Falwell had ...
