Jim Rice: Hall of Famer?
2008-01-09 20:30:00
First off, let me state my opinion. I believe Jim Rice is a Hall of Famer. I believe after his career ended we downplayed his accomplishments after the home run decade (1990s) and we basically forgot about him. He doesn’t have the longevity numbers that would have made him a cinch | 3,000 hits or 400 ...
Jim Rice screwed out of the Hall of Fame again
2008-01-08 22:11:00
Jim Rice missed his chance at the Hall of Fame again today, and this time by only 16 points. He received 392 votes (72.2 percent). 75% of the votes are needed to enter the Baseball Hall of fame, but the Baseball Writers' Association of America continues to have their heads up their collective asses. Next year will be his last appearance on the writers' ballot, where he'll be competing against Rickey HendersonBuy hey, Goose Gossage made it into the hall. Yay.
Jim Rice Falls Short of Hall of Fame Again
2008-01-08 00:00:00
This time around had to be particularly difficult for Jim Rice to swallow. The Hall of Fame inductees were announced just a short while ago and for the 14th year in a row Jim Rice is on the outside looking...
Is 2008 Finally the Year Jim Rice Gets in Hall of Fame?
2008-01-08 00:00:00
Today could finally be the day that Jim Rice gets his rightful place in the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Jim has been very close in past years and it's starting to look like he may be a perennial...
Wrapping Up the Rest
2008-01-04 04:35:00
I'm going to cover the next few ESPN HoF "debates" in one post, since I have less to say about each of them. Michael Knisley and John Shea tackled Andrew Dawson's candidacy; here's how Shea justified his decision to vote for "The Hawk":For me, the most important ingredient when voting is this: When you saw him play, did you think he was a Hall of Famer or not? Cooperstown has the best Hall of Fame in sports because it's the toughest to get into, because not every borderline candidate is inducted. It could be argued that it's great not for who is in, but for who is not in.In the case of Dawson, I always thought he was usually better than everyone else on the field, a guy who could take over a game, and dominate an era. Plus, what an intimidating fellow. I covered the Padres in '87, Dawson's MVP year with the Cubs. There was a game in July in which Dawson took an Eric Show fastball on the cheek that required 24 stitches. At first, he was motionless and couldn't charge the moun...
Is 2008 the year Jim Rice gets elected to Hall of Fame?
2007-12-27 13:47:00
Hall of Fame ballots are due to be mailed before Tuesday and when the announcement is made next month, and Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy is betting that former Boston Red Sox star Jim Rice is going to Cooperstown.Rice has three things going for him: 1) His vote total has been north of 60 percent in recent years and Sox historian Dick Bresciani has boosted Rice's candidacy with a convincing public relations campaign; 2) The more we talk about steroids, the better Rice's numbers look; 3) There are no new candidates to overwhelm the voters. Two years ago, Rice received more votes than any player who didn't earn enshrinement, but last year his chances diminished because of the introduction of new candidates Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn. The best new names on this year's ballot are Tim Raines and David Justice. Rice beats both.
Is Jim Rice a Hall of Famer?
2007-06-19 17:30:00
After doing the original article on Dwight Evans, Ian and I thought it’d be good for me to take a look at Jim Rice and ask the same question. So I decided to take a look at some statistics and see how they support it. When you go to the baseball-reference.com and look up Jim ...
What Was Jim Rice Thinking?
2007-04-06 02:15:00
When your asked by someone who thinks you deserve to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame, you don’t go and make an ass of yourself. Former Red Sox OF Jim Rice was invited by Pawtucket Red Sox owner, Ben Monder, to speak at the Pawsox luncheon that introduced the players to the media and ...
