Jon Stewart Interviews Senator Jim Webb on New GI Bill
2008-06-10 16:58:00
Senator Webb is pushing a new GI Bill that gives our troops enough money and benefits to go to a state run college in their state. The Bush Administration, The Republican Party and of course John McCain are against supporting our troops in this meaningful manner. Please note that they do still support our troops with flag pins, yard signs and jingo bullshit semantic rhetoric.

The parents of Sgt. Ross McGinnis, who died while valiently trying to save the lives of his comrades, used the occasion for receiving their dead son’s Medal of Honor to support efforts to further the education rights of soldiers and veterans. Jim Webb co-favorite for Democratic vice-presidential bid
2008-05-28 15:46:00
U.S. Senator Jim Webb from Virginia has moved up at one offshore gambling site to become a co-favorite with Sen. Hillary Clinton for the Democratic vice-presidential nomination. As of midday May 28, the Ladbrokes sports book has Clinton and Webb each with 4-1 odds of becoming the vice-presidential nominee, likely on a ticket with Sen. Barack Obama. Webb has broken through as the top non-Clinton possibility based on his military experience, longtime opposition to the Iraq War and effective work thus far in the U.S. Senate including his shepherding of the new G.I. Bill.----Relevant link: Ladbrokes

Virginia Senator Jim Webb getting a lot of face time on TV news leading to speculation he's on Obama's VP short list. Wash Post Jim's pimping his new book but at the same time spinning how much the Scotch-Irish (his descendants) and blacks are alike. Rolling Stone profile I wouldn't count him out but the political pragmatist in me indicates Obama's got to get a white bread governor from a state he needs - like Ohio and Pennsylvania. Barack's got a old DC Dem hand running potential running mates through the political woodchipper. CBS News NYT
Smith and Lesson
2008-05-20 03:20:00
NewsBusters chastises CBS "Early Show" anchor Harry Smith for observing, in an interview with Dem Sen. Jim Webb that A) Jim's "the least political person I know who's ever run for office," B) Jim's novels are "phenomenal" and "amazing." I've known Jim for 18 years (kids went to school together) and we were neighbors in Falls Church, Virginia. I spent a lot of time in the presence of Jim and then-wife Jo Ann's (she's my best friend). Hung around the house, dinners, parties, went to Jim's niece's wedding a couple of years ago... I can knowledgably observe Jim is the LAST person I ever thought would run for elected office. Although brilliant, intense, and opinionated, Jim seemed content to churn out his "amazing" (yes, amazing) books and movie scripts. Jim's refusal to don the phony mantle of, say, where shall I begin? John Kerry, is mountain air to the hot air political stench. Jim can be "scary" (my daughter and friends) and eschews fools. But at least you know where he stan...
FISA Fight: Senate passes telecom immunity and flips the bird to America
2008-02-12 19:59:00
Earlier today, Sam asked a very important question: When it comes to convincing the public that it’s somehow justifiable to give a pass to corporations that illegally spied on Americans without a warrant, how stupid do you think we are? Well, the answer is that the so-called “Democratic” Congress doesn’t give a damn what we think, as they’ve voted down virtually all amendments to the FISA reauthorization bill that would have granted oversight and accountability–including- blocking immunity for telecoms. As Glenn Greenwald eloquently notes, this day we’ve seen a so-called “bipartisan” Congress justify lawbreaking and illegality on a level that even the previous Republican majority couldn’t pull off. As Glenn notes: A total of 18 Democrats joined all Republicans in voting for immunity: Bayh, Inouye, Johnson, Landrieu, McCaskill, Ben Nelson, Bill Nelson, Stabenow, Feinstein, Kohl, Pryor, Rockefeller, Salazar, Carper, Mikulski,...
Opinion on senate rejecting Jim Webb ammendment regulating troop deployment
2007-09-20 17:04:00
From here. WASHINGTON — The Senate blocked legislation Wednesday that would have regulated the amount of time troops spent in combat, a blow for Democrats struggling to challenge President Bush's Iraq policies. The 56-44 vote was four votes short of reaching the 60 needed to cut off debate. It was the second time in as many months that the bill, sponsored by Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., was sidetracked. In July, a similar measure fell four votes short of advancing. => Read more!

I know we've been tough on the Democrats in Congress for not ending the Iraq war and not standing up to the President.Let today's actions in the Senate be proof that the Democrats ARE in fact doing what they can to end the war and stand up to the President.Twice today, all Democrats (excluding Lieberman of course) voted to restore habeas corpus to detainees and to require troops to be home for the same amount of time as they are deployed, both against what the Bush administration wants. All Democrats and six Republicans...a good majority, 56.They just don't have the votes. You want change, you need to elect more Senators who want change. 50 votes don't cut in the Senate.

Senate Rejects Webb Amendment
2007-09-19 23:48:00
The Republicans filibustered an amendment by Senator Jim Webb (D-Virginia) to require troops to have the same amount of rest time as they have deployment time. This common-sense amendment was defeated by a 56-44 cloture vote, will all the Democrats sans Lieberman voted aye and six Republicans joining them.

Jim Webb wrote this email to his email list. We will be offering an amendment that requires our troops have a 1:1 deployment-to-dwell ratio for active units and members. This ...
Senate Watch: Virginia
2007-09-11 23:15:00
When Republican Senator John Warner announced his retirement a week ago, few were surprised. The veteran lawmaker and former naval secretary turned 80 in February, had done raised only a few thousand dollars for his re-election bid, and was doing little to quiet retirement speculation. Warner's announcement did, however, open the field in what is likely to be one of the highest profile Senate races in the country. On the Democratic side, the field seems clear. Mark Warner, the popular former governor, is said to be considering a run. Term limits (no one can serve consecutive terms as governor in Virginia) forced him from office in 2006, yet Warner was seen as one of the rising stars in the Democratic Party. He ruled out a presidential run in late 2006, but remains a potential running mate for the eventual Democratic nominee. With no guarantees to get on the ticket, however, Warner seems inclined to abandon such aspirations for a Senate run. The bid wouldn't be Warner's firs...
This Is Gonna Piss Off Some Republican

See now, if Bush had been more prompt with this news, there probably wouldn't be a Senator Webb, Senator Tester, Congressman Courtney, Congressman Loebsack, Congressman Hall, Congressman Rodriguez, and maybe not even a Congresswoman Shea-Porter.I, for one, am not complaining, but if I was a Republican, I'd be livid.
Senator's Jim Webb And Lindsay Graham Have It Out
2007-07-16 23:36:00
Yesterday on Meet the Press, Senator Jim Webb and Senator Lindsay Graham had it out on the Troops in Iraq and the Presidents surge. This is a must see!Republicans have always out talked Democrats to get their point accross and yes, in the past the Democrats would allow them to do just that. Now there's a new day and a new sheriff in town. The Democrats are having none of that anymore as Senator Graham found out from Senator Webb.

This Is Suppprting The Troops?
2007-07-11 21:53:00
Republicans killed an amendment submitted by Senator Jim Webb (D-Virginia) which would force the Pentagon to match the length of a solider's leave with the length of his or her deployment.Basically Republicans told the nation that troops do not deserve to be at home with their family and friends for the same amount of time they're spending politicing a civil war. There is no excuse for this and Republicans who voted against cloture should be thrown out of the Senate. The following members of the GOP are not included in this;Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minnesota)Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine)Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Nebraska)Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Oregon)Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine)Sen. John Sununu (R-New Hampshire)Sen. John Warner (R-Virginia)Yes, it is true that all but Snowe are facing tough reelections next year. Here's the list of those who are ALSO up for reelection next year, but voted not to move the amendment to a vote;Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tennessee)Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyoming)Sen. Sa...
Obama Girl and Independent Videos
2007-06-17 04:56:00
There is no doubt that the internet has been playing a powerful role in the presidential race so far. The interesting thing about the role of the internet in this election has been the influence of videos made by people not connected with political campaigns. On Wednesday, June 13, 2007, BarelyPolitical.com released a saucy video called, ?I Got a Crush...On Obama? by ?Obama Girl?. So far it has been viewed almost 900,000 times since Wednesday.Within 24 hours of posting the video on their website it?s creators appeared on MSNBC to discuss their success and the topic of third party internet videos. The makers of the video were asked whether or not this kind of video might actually hurt Barack Obama?s campaign. The video?s creators said that they thought the video was funny, positive, and just a fun video, and that it does not hurt Barack. The Obama campaign was quick to respond that they had nothing to do with the ?Obama Girl? video and did not offer any other response to the video....
Restoring ?Checks and Balances.? Jim Webb?s (D) Proposal, John Edwards? Sup
2007-03-10 01:44:01
Empowering our nation?s constitutionally mandated system of checks and balances is perhaps the single most important thing that the new Democratic majority must accomplish. It is undeniable that Mr. Bush regards the 2002 Iraq resolution as a tacit approval of expansive, unrestrained authorization for the application of military action when deemed necessary by the administration. Coupled with what are easily identified parallels between the build up to the Iraq Civil War and the rhetoric articulated in response to the Iranian threat, implementing this constitutional restraint on broad executive power has now exceeded being essential. The Washington Times Freshman Sen. James H. Webb Jr. yesterday introduced legislation to force President Bush to seek congressional authorization before using force against Iran. Democratic leaders, who indicated general support for the Virginia Democrat’s plan last week, are still deciding whether they will attach it to an upcoming spending bil...
Is McCain In Trouble?
2007-03-02 20:28:00
The 2008 cycle certainly hasn't progressed the way that John McCain envisioned. After embracing George W. Bush (and simultaneously spurning John Kerry's attempt to form a unity ticket), McCain was to become the establishment candidate on his way to winning the nomination. Republicans have a tendency to nominate the candidate who paid his dues in previous cycles--Bob Dole in 1996, George Bush I in 1988, Ronald Reagan in 1980 all had made previous bids. McCain had been preparing to face a strong challenge from George Allen, who would have run to his right. But when Allen was defeated by Jim Webb in his re-election attempt in 2006, his possible 2008 presidential run ended as well. It seems as though McCain would have been more comfortable running against Allen--he could continue to play his maverick card (earning the support of moderate Republicans), while hopefully portraying Allen as too conservative and suggesting that it is his turn to carry the Republican mantle. It would ha...
Obama Endorsed By Virginia Governor
2007-02-19 19:44:00
Virginia Governor Tim Kaine has endorsed Barack Obama for president. The announcement official came Saturday, though rumors began to circulate in the middle of last week. The two are said to have a strong relationship--Obama campaigned for Kaine in 2005 and new Virginia Senator Jim Webb in 2006.An endorsement from Mark Warner would have been far more intriguing and unexpected. It is believed that many of the major political donors and operatives that were prepared to work for Warner have moved to the Obama campaign. Warner, however, seems likely to withhold any endorsement until after the nomination is wrapped up. As a potential VP candidate, he would not want to cross himself off of anyone's short list.Link: Discussion on Raising Kaine, a Virginia-oriented political site

Jim Webb didn't waste any time with the tradition of Senate
2007-01-13 20:26:01
Jim Webb didn't waste any time with the tradition of Senate comity during his first hearing with the Senate Armed Services Committee yesterday. During yesterday's hearing, Lindsey Graham's questions to Defense Secretary Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Peter Pace, were straight out of the White House playbook.  Question after question couched in such a way that any disagreement would be tantamount to saying, "I hate America."  He finished with a question about high reenlistment rates and asked if the soldiers in Iraq: ...believe their mission is directly related to the security of their own children and grandchildren? And after Pace compliantly answered, "Absolutely, sir," it was Webb's turn. General Pace, I wasn't going to say this, but I want to say something, just my own little interjection here on the reenlistment rates and why people serve.  You know, I come from a family that's spent a lot of time in the military generationally and I ...
