Jimmy Rollins, Broken Ankle
2008-04-24 00:49:00
News starts to trickle out that it’s more than an ankle sprain for Jimmy Rollins. It looks like Rollins has a broken ankle. If only he had wrapped that Ace bandage around his ankle as tight as he braids his hair. If this news turns out to be true, I’d say you have two options: ...
Jimmy Rollins: Broken wheel?
2008-04-23 20:13:00
Scuttlebutt on the Intertron is that Jimmy Rollins has a broken ankle. Nice job letting him dick around on it for a week and a half, Philadelphia Management. If this is true, he's gone for another month or two and may not be all that effective when he gets back (given the immobilization it requires). If you were sitting on a buy-low trade offer, it may actually be a sell-high at this point.

2008-04-11 06:25:00
Jose Reyes scored the winning run with a deft slide at the plate on Angel Pagan’s 12th-inning single, and the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 Thursday night. With the Phillies missing MVP shortstop Jimmy Rollins, New York took the last two of a three-game series after losing nine straight to Philadelphia — ...
Phillies fall apart without Jimmy Rollins, lose 8-2 to Mike Pelfrey and Met
2008-04-10 05:20:00
The Philadelphia Phillies fell apart without Jimmy Rollins. Mike Pelfrey gave the Mets’ injury-riddled pitching staff an encouraging boost, and the Phillies played a painfully sloppy game without their MVP shortstop in New York’s 8-2 victory Wednesday night. The Mets ended a nine-game losing streak to Philadelphia, taking advantage of four errors that led to ...

Philadelphia Sports Figures To Watch In 08?

ITI’s Top Ten of 2008  10. Andre Igoudala- He is the young talented player on the Sixers right now. Not a tremendous player, but he will impact how well the Sixers do. I could have put Cole Hamels here, but I figured I needed at least one Sixer on the list. 9. Ed Stefanski- The new Sixers ...
Most Valuable Prognosticator
2007-11-27 19:28:00
Another offseason, another Jimmy Rollins prediction:"We'll win probably 100 games . . . 100 games will get us to the playoffs," Rollins told Comcast SportsNet last night, when asked for his forecast for next season.I'm not sure why Rollins thinks it'll take 100 wins to garner the NL East title in 2008, but if either the Mets or the Braves miraculously manages to finish 99-63, he'll be spending October at home. The Phillies finished 89-73 in 2007, and their Pythagorean W-L of 87-75 indicates that they actually outperformed expectations. Teams don't typically vault from 89 wins to 100 wins without a major change in personnel, (although it can happen) so let's look at what the Phillies have done since the end of the NLDS.They re-signed J.C. Romero, (who threw 36 1/3 innings for the team last year) traded Michael Bourn and Geoff Geary to Houston for Brad Lidge and Eric Bruntlett, and acquired Chris Snelling from Tampa Bay. The addition of Lidge, in particular, signifies an improve...
Mountain Time Zone Bias

Bernie Lincicome of the Rocky Mountain News believes that Matt Holliday was the NL's MVP in 2007. He just isn't sure why.Stiffed again. Were we the only ones watching? Was all that happened with the Rockies just air guitar baseball and shadow puppets? Pay no attention to the man behind the screen. He has no MVP vote, anyhow. This one is worse than the other two because Matt Holliday was not only the most valuable player in the National League he was practically in his own league.I'll ignore try the absence of commas in that last sentence, and focus instead on the content of the statement itself. Lincicome implies that Holliday's performance placed him so far above his competitors that one would have to be a fool to deny him an MVP vote, but in fact, Holliday was probably not even one of the best three players in his league. I'll refer you to the great Joe Sheehan's MVP analysis, since I agree with his conclusions. If you're not a BP subscriber, just know that Sheehan looke...

Jimmy Rollins never thought about winning an MVP award until teammate Ryan Howard did it last year. “Seeing him do it inspired me because the only thing he can do better than me is hit the ball a lot further,” Rollins joked. Howard is nine inches taller and about 80 pounds heavier than Rollins, so ...

Jimmy Rollins edges Matt Holliday to win the National League MVP award. “It never crossed my mind that I would go out there and win an MVP,” Rollins said on a conference call from California. “I had a real big smile on my face, to make it simple. I was excited but I wasn’t quite sure ...

Rollins received 353 points beating out Holliday by 17 points. Rollins became the first player in history to collect at least 200 hits, 25 homers, 15 triples and 25 steals in a season. ... Your NL MVP, Jimmy Rollins

I don't agree with this, as I thought Matt Holliday should have won, but Jimmy Rollins isn't a bad choice. Congrats Jimmy...From CNNSI:Jimmy Rollins won the National League MVP award in a close race over Matt Holliday on Tuesday, boosted by speed and steady all-around play that drove the Philadelphia Phillies to their first playoff berth in 14 years. The Gold Glove shortstop received 16 of 32 first-place votes and finished with 353 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.Holliday, who led Colorado's surprising charge to the World Series, was the runner-up with 11 first-place votes and 336 points. Milwaukee slugger Prince Fielder came in third, with five first-place votes and 284 points."

The (Tall) Tale of Two MVP Candidates
2007-10-08 08:12:00
Sam Donnellon of the Philadelphia Daily News believes that Jimmy Rollins of the Phillies should be the MVP of the National League. That, in itself, is not worthy of drawing special notice from BTL's ever-roaming eye. However, Donnellon's rationale, if one can call it that, is entirely deserving of our ocular attention.HE WON the argument in the worst way possible, Jimmy Rollins did. He is the Most Valuable Player of the National League because of what he means to his team, because that contribution was more crucial to his team getting to Game 1 of the National League Division Series than was the contribution of the other candidate across the field, the one who hit the insurance home run in Colorado's 4-2 win.So you're saying that Rollins was more valuable to the Phillies than Holliday was to the Rockies. This might be a valid reason to designate Rollins as MVP-- if it were true. But it probably isn't. Holliday finished 2007 with a WARP-3 (Wins Over Replacement Player, adjusted ...
Sticking Up for the Little Guy
2007-09-02 09:11:00
Jimmy Rollins won't be eligible for the Hall of Fame for many years, but Philadelphia Daily News columnist Bill Conlin is already clumsily making the case for his induction:Jimmy's already a lot bigger than Pee WeeNot so fast there, Bill. First of all, "Pee Wee" was actually taller than Jimmy. Reese was 5'9", and Rollins is listed at 5'8". Reese even had 15 pounds on Rollins. And if you're referring to their production, well, just wait and see. They used to be baseball's welterweight division. Legs and leather were their skill set. Lumber was a plus.I assume you're referring to shortstops. Well, lumber was a plus, but some exceptions to the norm still, you know, swung a good deal of it.With extremely rare exceptions, they could bat only leadoff, No. 2 or No. 8. The 2-hole guy usually lacked the foot speed to lead off and often was a second baseman. But he was an expert at taking pitches so the leadoff man could steal second. He also could hit behind a runner or bunt him over....
Jimmy Rollins Needs to Check His Ego at the Door
2007-08-08 16:08:00
First we all got the pleasure of hearing Jimmy Rollins diatribe about how the Phillies were the team to beat heading into the season. That proclamation hit the wall like a brown paper bag of poop when the Phillies got off to a horrid start. It came back to haunt him in a ...
Let the All-Star Festivities Begin
2007-07-03 20:36:00
There seems to have been a dearth of shoddy sportswriting for a while, so we here at BTL haven?t had great material lately. Fortunately, every year the All-Star game rolls around, and sportswriters all over the country come crawling out of the woodwork to lament a snub of their favorite player, or else laud some other All-Star team appointment. In other words, BTL is quickly back in business. This time around, it?s Phil Sheridan of the Philadelphia Inquirer, who chooses not only to applaud the selection of the three Phillies who made it, but also to offer up a couple more would-be Phillies All-Stars.It's always easy to debate All-Star Game selections and even easier to criticize a voting process that sometimes rewards reputation over merit. But as far as the Phillies are concerned this year, the system worked.Well, maybe it worked as far as the Phillies are concerned, but does that mean it?s fair?Ryan Howard probably should be on the National League team. Despite his slow start and...

Jimmy Rollins : Feel the Power

Jimmy Rollins : Feel the Power   Ok, maybe not 70+ HR pro-rated power but we could see him hitting 35+.     So why is he surging and will it continue? That?s the multi million dollar question. Well, Personally, I believe that the power surge that Jimmy?s experiencing is directly attributable to a more patient approach at the plate. ...

This is what you get with Jimmy Rollins. One day after going 1-6, Rollins leads off the game with a HR and later connects again for his 5th on the season. Rollins ended up going 2-4 with 2 HR's, 3 RBI's and now has his average back up to .278 on the season.
Jimmy Rollins - With Increased Patience comes Increased Slugging

Jimmy Rollins - With Increased Patience comes Increased Slugging           I have a personal theory on spring training stats. The majority of individuals feel that their mostly useless, but I think if a player is seeing the ball well and exhibiting patience, then they?ll probably take a number of walks. Seeing the ball & exhibiting strike zone control ...
