Saturday Not-So-Random Song: Joan Baez, "Virgin Mary"
2009-08-15 21:14:00
Today, Aug. 15, is the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Catholic tradition holds that the mother of Jesus ascended bodily into heaven at the end of her life, without dying (like Elijah in the Old Testament). While this isn't an official Episcopalian doctrine, we still celebrate today as the Virgin Mary's feast day in the saints' calendar. Here, James Kiefer at The Daily Office explains the significance of the Virgin Birth: Besides Jesus himself, only two humans are mentioned by name in the Creeds. One is Pontius Pilate, Roman procurator of Judea from 26 to 36 AD. That Jesus was crucified by order of Pontius Pilate pins down the date of his death within a few years, and certifies that we are not talking, like the worshippers of Tammuz or Adonis, about a personification or symbol of the annual death and resurrection of the crops. His death is an event in history, something that really happened. The other name is that of Mary. The Creeds say that Christ was "born of the v...

We started out with seven songs she brought to the table that she arrived at by hearing them. Some of them she'd already started performing, so we started out with songs she very much wanted to sing."Those songs include three written by Earle along with Elvis Costello's Scarlet Tide, Patty Griffin's Mary and the title song, written by Tom Waits.

Lyric : Joan Baez Hush Little Baby
2008-03-06 16:04:00
Hush, little baby, don’t say a word, Mama’s going to buy you a mockingbird. And if that mockingbird don’t sing, Mama’s going to buy you a diamond ring. And if that diamond ring turns brass, Mama’s going to buy you a looking glass. And if that looking glass gets broke, Mama’s going to buy you a billy goat. And if that billy goat ...
Short Takes - Charts, True Colors Tour, Joan Baez, Al Green, more
2008-03-06 01:36:00
Janet Jackson's new album, Discipline, will open at the top of the album charts when they are published this week with sales of 181,000 copies. While this would seem to be a good sign for the album, it should be noted that 2004's Damita Jo opened with 381,000 in sales and 20 Y.O. started with 296,000. Both faded rather quickly.Dolly Parton's Backwoods Barbie will open at number seventeen with sales of 27,000. That's her highest career debut on the album chart.Sales for the week were down 6.7% from the same week last year. Cyndi Lauper and the B-52's are headlining this summer's True Colors tour which will play twenty-four dates starting May 31 in Boston. Also in for some stops on the tour are the Indigo Girls, Joan Jett, Joan Armatrading and Regina Spektor. The tour is being sponsored by the Logo network and will raise funds for gay, lesbian and transgendered advocacy groups.Steve Earle is producing Joan Baez's next album with an anticipated release of late summer/early ...
Joan Baez Endorses Candidate for the First Time
2008-02-05 01:27:00
Joan Baez has always been very politically active, but has never endorsed a candidate for office until this year. The singer has come out in support of Barack Obama in his bid for the presidency.Baez wrote in today's San Francisco Chronicle:?I have attempted throughout my life to give a voice to the voiceless, hope to the hopeless, encouragement to the discouraged, and options to the cynical and complacent,? she wrote. ?From Northern Ireland to Sarajevo to Latin America, I have sung and marched, engaged in civil disobedience, visited war zones, and broken bread with those who had little bread to break.?Through all those years, I chose not to engage in party politics. Though I was asked many times to endorse candidates at every level, I was never comfortable doing so.??At this time, however, changing that posture feels like the responsible thing to do,? she said.?If anyone can navigate the contaminated waters of Washington, lift up the poor, and appeal to the rich to share...

Joan Baez Sings "With God On Our Side" in 1966: Suggested Campaign Song for
2007-09-15 09:20:00
Joan Baez's 1966 performance of Bob Dylan's "With God On Our Side"...I don't know how you can not be moved to tears by this song and Baez's performance. She has the voice of angel. And Dylan's words are the most powerful refutation of war as a moral instrument ever written.Dylan first performed the song at Town Hall in New York City, April 12, 1963. Joan Baez took him by the hand and out on the stage of the Newport Folk Festival for an extraordinary performance of the song on July 25, 1963. You can see a clip from it in Martin Scorsese's 2005 No Direction Home bio-documentary of Dylan. Here in 2007, the hope expressed at the end of the song that, "If God is on our side, He'll stop the next war," remains unfulfilled.Ron Paul, the only one of the Republicans, and Dennis Kucinich, Mike Gravel, John Edwards, Bill Richardson, even Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and to a degree any of the other Democrats, could make that happen if elected President. They could stop this unconst...
Bob Dylan and Ron Paul
2007-09-10 23:34:00
I was watching Martin Scorsese's 2005 No Direction Home last night - the story of Bob Dylan's complex rise through the folk, anti-war, and rock eras. My favorite scene in this extraordinary chronicle is Dylan and Joan Baez singing Dylan's "God On Our Side" at the 1963 Newport Folk Festival. The words and emotion of that anti-war song ring as true today, unhappily, as in 1963. They're not being sung, but they're being said, by Ron Paul and his supporters."God On Our Side" - how countries going to war always claim or think God is on their side - is probably the best anti-war song ever written. Dylan also wrote "Masters of War," a close second. And I put Phil Ochs' "I Ain't A Marchin' Anymore" and Edwin Starr's "War" (written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong) up there, too.But what made the Newport Folk Festival scene so powerful was not just the song but the Dylan and Baez performance, two thin wisps with wonderful voices, and the way the crowd responded. This wa...

Joan Baez Diamonds & Rust Lyrics Well I'll be damnedHere comes your ghost againBut that's not unusualIt's just that the moon is fullAnd you happened to callAnd here I sitHand on the telephoneHearing a voice I'd knownA couple of light years agoHeading straight for a fall As I remember your eyesWere bluer than robin's eggsMy poetry was lousy you saidWhere are you calling from?A booth in the midwestTen years agoI bought you some cufflinksYou brought me somethingWe both know what memories can bringThey bring diamonds and rust Well you burst on the sceneAlready a legendThe unwashed phenomenonThe original vagabondYou strayed into my armsAnd there you stayedTemporarily lost at seaThe Madonna was yours for freeYes the girl on the half-shellWould keep you unharmed Now I see you standingWith brown leaves falling aroundAnd snow in your hairNow you're smiling out the windowOf that crummy hotelOver Washington SquareOur breath comes out white cloudsMingles and hangs in the airSpeaking s...

Joan Baez: Blow It Out Your End
2007-05-02 19:31:00
The times, they ain't a'changin' for Joan Baez. Except she's aging like the rest of us. Joan then. Joan now. Army bigwigs banned the 66-year-old liberal anti-war babe from performing at the crumbling Walter Reed hospital in DC, the squalid conditions forcing top brass resignations. "They let the rats in, why not you?'" said a cynical bud of Joan's. Forty years later Hanoi Joan is not well-regarded among the U.S. military. [Wash Post]
