Max Scherzer, Joba Chamberlain And Other Fantasy Notes
2008-04-30 17:38:00
The next Joba Chamberlain made his major league debut last night.  Arizona Diamondback Max Scherzer mopped-up for four innings last night and struck out seven Astros.  For a team 5.5 games in front after 27 games, this has to be disheartening for the 2nd through 5th place teams in the NL West. First half of April wunderkind, Johnny Cuetto, got bombed last night and now has an unsightly ERA of 5.40.  The season is still young, but I find this progression of Ks per start more disturbing than I know I should - 10, 8, 6, 5, 2, 2. On Monday, the Angels called up top hitting prospect Brandon Wood and sat him so Robb Quinlan can play 3B.  Whether the team recognized the developmentally-retarding error of its way or not, Wood started last night at 3B and went 1-2 with a walk and strikeout.  He hit 9th while SS Erick Ayabr moved from his typically nine-hole to 5th.  There are still something not quite right with that. A day after designating Jason Botts for assi...

Joba Chamberlain To The Rotation Sooner Rather Than Later
2008-04-21 08:31:00
This morning's New York Times has acting Yankees owner, Hank Steinbrenner, saying what most people think about Joba Chamberlain becoming a full-time middle reliever:?I want him as a starter and so does everyone else, including him, and that is what we are working toward and we need him there now. There is no question about it, you don?t have a guy with a 100-mile-per-hour fastball and keep him as a setup guy. You just don?t do that. You have to be an idiot to do that.?Oh? Did I mention he insulted his GM, too? In case he just mispoke with the idiot comment, he followed-up with this:?The mistake was already made last year switching him to the bullpen out of panic or whatever. I had no say in it last year and I wouldn?t have allowed it. That was done last year, so now we have to catch up. It has to be done on a schedule so we don?t rush him.?
Fantasy Notes: Adam Lind, Johnny Cueto & Joba Chamberlain
2008-04-20 22:00:00
The Toronto Blue Jays released DH Frank Thomas ahead of his vesting his 2009 option for $10MM.  The signing turns out to have been as short-sighted as any fantasy players could have told the Jays last Spring when Thomas was brought aboard to block top prospect Adam Lind.  As a matter of fact, the Jays went ahead and double blocked Lind by signing LF Shannon Stewart. As a result of this organizational behavior, I have a hard time getting excited about Adam Lind.  I am not a fan of the Blue Jays front office actions, but even I can read the writing on the wall.  People paid to know do not believe Lind is legit. * In the Baseball Notebook Newsletter (sign-up here), there was a question about Johnny Cueto and his 2008 projection prior to yesterday's start, there was this info:...to further put Cueto's start into perspective, he has looked fantastic but there's also been some good luck in there too.  For example, of the balls he's allowed hitters to put in pl...

Joba Chamberlain And The Yankees Jo-Mo & Other Fantasy Notes
2008-04-07 14:58:00
Chien-Ming Wang struck out six Rays on his way to his 2nd win of the season.  He struck out six in six innings.  I am on record stating I believe he will increase his K totals this year because his low K totals were used against in in his losing arbitration case.  FWIW, his second highest K total in a game in 2007 was six.  He did it three times in six innings of work, and three more times in more than six innings of work.  There is nothing in today's performance that allows me to conclude I am right. Joba Chamberlain threw two shutout innings, but only struck out one.  I have a sneaking suspicion that he is staying in the bullpen unless Ross Ohlendorf or Brian Bruney step-up and grab the 7th and 8th innings.  LaTroy Hawkins and Kyle Farnsworth are waiver moves waiting to happen. There will be little clamor from Yankees fans if Joel Sherman's Jo-Mo phrase catches on.  Don't get it?  Think mojo, bay-bee. * The Pirates placed their start...
Joba Chamberlain Starts Strong

Further fueling the fire of grand expectations, Joba Chamberlain pitched admirably last night, preserving Chien-Ming Wang’s win and providing one of the best bridges between starter and closer in baseball today. Joba Chamberlain Far From Perfect
2008-03-06 07:00:00
Joba Chamberlain not perfect? Say it ain't so, but the Yankees second year pitcher, who will be considered a rookie, did not look dominant in the Yankees nationally televised spring training loss. It is not time to panic for Yankees fans on Chamberlain's fantasy managers, but what will be interesting is to see how the talented hurler responds to a bad outing, something that he did not deal with much...

Joba Chamberlain And Barry Bonds
2008-03-03 19:18:00
There are a couple of issues gnawing at my insides.  The first is Joba Chamberlain's usage, and the second is Barry Bonds.  I am a Yankees fan first and foremost, and I understand not destroying the golden arm of Chamberlain.  But I cannot get past this desire of the Yankees to tempt the fates to leave Joba as a set-up man. Wouldn't this lead to another season of babying in 2009 as he will not accumulate the necessary innings in 2008 to be a season-long starter in 2009 under the +30 Rule being applied this season? Joba has been ranked as the top starting pitching prospect in baseball by Baseball America with four plus pitches, and the Yankees want to waste that in the 8th inning.  I can't be the only one who thinks this is idiocy, either to have a reliever ranked as the #3 overall prospect or the Yanks wanting to waste his skills in the bullpen. After all, it was the Yankees that forced this situation by taking Joba out of the rotation last summer to be used a...

Joba Chamberlain Undraftable As Set Up Man
2008-02-12 22:18:00
There’s been lots and lots of talk about the role Joba Chamberlain would take for the Yankees in 2008. On the hunch that Chamberlain would move into the starting rotation, his stock rose. In fact, his Average Draft Position is 147.55 (12th round) with an earliest picked position of 97 (8th round). These high draft ...
The Risk For Joba Chamberlain
2008-02-12 15:04:00
It's official.  The Yankees are going to attempt to use Joba Chamberlain, the top starting pitcher prospect in all of baseball, as a set-up reliever for the first third of the season and then switch him to a starter for the final two-thirds of the season.  This is being done to keep him around 140 innings pitched for 2008 under the belief that having a pitcher exceed his previous season' innings pitched total by 30 will lead to increased risk of injury. Joel Sherman of the NY Post goes through this best-laid scheme: Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Pettitte, Mike Mussina, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy would stay healthy to form the rotation. Chamberlain stabilizes the set-up crew for the 1st two months until a viable option emerges. Joba then goes to the minors to be stretched out to start. Am I the only one who sees this ending with Joba spending the season in the bullpen and then being stuck as a reliever next season as his 2008 one being spent in the bullpen only yields 90 inni...

Fantasy Baseball: Scott Kazmir Or Joba Chamberlain
2008-01-20 18:45:00
I'm looking over my list of possible keepers in my AL-only 4x4 $260 keeper league.  (Old Schoolers will recognize that as the traditional Rotisserie Baseball set-up.)  I have two that seem to be difficult to assess. One is Joba Chamberlain, and the other is Scott Kazmir.  One took the New York baseball world by storm last summer and is considered one of the top pitching prospects in the game.  The other quietly led the AL in strikeouts by finshing ahead of such off-season headlining pitchers as Johan Santana and Erik Bedard. Yet, I am torn between who is the better keeper.  A $13 Joba Chamberlain or a $20 Scott Kazmir.  Kazmir is proven, but plays on a weak team where Wins may be harder to come by and has WHIP issues given his innings pitched.  Chamberlain is unproven but has the winning team and no control issues while having the same strikeout ability of Kazmir. Who would you rather have?

More About That Team from the Bronx
2007-10-16 06:02:00
IGN Sports' Dan Phillips has come up with a list of recommendations for the Yankees as they try to "right" the 94-win ship, with the premise that "The Yanks should wave goodbye to sentimentality." I can't argue with two of them, ("Let Joe Torre Walk" and "Sign A-Rod") but the other two represent the opposite of good advice:2) Let Jorge Posada WalkPosada is coming off the best season by an aging catcher in baseball history, which is precisely why the Yankees should let some other team get suckered into paying him the big bucks. Aging catchers inevitably break down into mere shells of their former selves, and what's worse, they do it suddenly and without warning. Do you really want to fork over a three-year, 45 million-dollar contract to Posada on the assumption that he'll defy one of the few universal truths in baseball and produce offensively well into his late thirties? Just ask Red Sox fans how that worked out with Jason Varitek. Just one year after signing their oft-injured s...
Odds and Ends: A-Rod, Boras, Pettitte
2007-10-15 12:00:00
Early Monday morning reading material... Interesting article in the New York Daily News regarding Scott Boras and Alex Rodriguez.  Boras insists that many of his clients have not taken the largest deal offered to them, giving examples.  The article also touches upon recent Boras clients connected to performance-enhancing drugs (Rick Ankiel and Scott Schoeneweis).  Boras' agency is known for its obsessive attention to detail for all of its clients, and seeing a few of them busted raises some questions. Last winter, we discussed the possibility of Hiroki Kuroda coming over from Japan.  Well, he's a free agent again, and Nick Cafardo is wondering if 2008 will be the year.  Cafardo also noted that Daisuke Matsuzaka did not earn the Red Sox nearly as much marketing revenue as Scott Boras suggested. Newsday's Ken Davidoff says Andy Pettitte intends to exercise his $16MM player option for 2008.  Davidoff points out that Pettitte has the same deadline for th...

Joba Chamberlain?s father visits Yankee Stadium for first time (AP)

MLB News From Yesterday - Joba Chamberlain, Billy Wagner, AL Cy Young
2007-08-31 17:04:00
Was I the only one who thought Joba was going to get his first major-league save when he came out to pitch the 9th inning after entering in the 8th with a 2-0 lead (subsequently increased to 5-0 by the end of the inning)?  Then Joba sent two pitches over Kevin Youkilis' head to lose the opportunity for a save when the umpire tossed him.   I have little doubt the pitches were intentional, but I wonder if leagues will be won or lost based on that one lost save. The Mets brought closer Bill Wagner, he of the well-rested arm, in the 8th inning of a 10-8 game. He proceeded to blow the game in the 9th.  The fact he pitched two innings means the Mets did not believe his fatigued left arm to be anything more than that, but the results are not so consoling.  The next inning in which Wagner allows no runs will be his first since August 18th. Other than strikeouts, is there any reason to be discussing Johann Santana or Erik Bedard in the AL CY Young race?  Neither pit...
Ian Kennedy to Replace Mussina
2007-08-29 06:10:00
Twenty-one years young, Joba Chamberlain was hitting 100 on the radar tonight, fanning a flailing J.D. Drew in the process. The 2006 draft pick still hasn’t allowed a run in 10 innings, striking out 17 in that span. When the smoke of the fastballs had cleared, the Yankees were still left with a big what-to-do with the aging and fading Mike Mussina, who has allowed more than six runs in each of his last three outings, losing every time. Despite Chamberlain’s exciting string of major league dominance, the Yankees remain reluctant to risk injury by throwing him into the rotation, and with all my talk of pitch counts, I can’t possibly fault them for that. Enter Ian Kennedy, the 21st overall pick in 2006 out of USC, who, if not for all of Chamberlain’s prowess, would be the talk of all the Bronx. The Yankees are expected to call up Kennedy to replace Mussina in the rotation for Saturday’s game against the Devil Rays. Manager Joe Torre offers the following on...
Likely End of the road for Mussina
2007-08-28 17:59:00
Likely End of the road for Mussina Mussina got bombed yet again, and sports radio all over NY is calling for his head. In a strange moment of clarity, I think the talking heads are actually right on this one. If Mussina?s out, who goes in? The Yankees are stocked in the minor leagues with some young quality arms and should really give one of them a shot in place of Mussina. Joba Chamberlain can go back into a starters role. A player we wrote about yesterday, Ian Kennedy (and his sub 2.00 era) is deserving of a major league tryout. Kei Igawa has been solid in his recent milb stint, although he?s still giving up the long ball. Hell, even Ben Kozlowski would be a better option at this point. I think the main question is, at what point does Torre ?man up? to a veteran and sit him down (move him to the pen) for the good of the club. Mussina has had a great career & at times this season has been very productive. He?s probably not doing himself any favors in the upcoming free agent ...
Joba Chamberlain - The Next Clemens or Rivera?
2007-08-23 19:41:00
Joba Chamberlain has certainly made a huge impact on the Yankees bullpen over the last couple of weeks. Touting a 95-99 mph fastball, a plus slider, and impeccable control for a power pitcher, the question remains, will he be the next Clemens or the next Rivera? His numbers so far show that he has
Joba Chamberlain
2007-08-08 16:21:00
The Joba Chamberlain Era began last night with two shut-out innings of work in the Yankees' blowout of the Toronto Blue Jays.  In those two innings of work, Chamberlain allowed two hits and a walk.  However, his minor league strikeout totals (135 in 88.1 IP) naturally leads one's eyes to the SO Column in the boxscore.  It reads "2". The question now becomes how Yankees' manager Joe Torre will use the 2006 supplemental first round pick.  Will he go the route taken with another Yankees' rookie who had a much more spectacular debut - Edwar Ramirez and his strike-out-the-side, or will Chamberlain's status as the bullpen arm the Yankees "traded for" at the deadline lead to regular use? Assuming the latter, then Joba's 2007 upside could be Carlos Marmol of the Cubs - 12.3 K/9.  If correct, Joba Chamberlain will prove to be more valuable than than the 3rd through 5th starters on most major league teams over the remaining 50 or so games of the season. The ques...

A King-Sized Error
2007-08-07 07:11:00
NY Post Yankee beat writer George King occupies a prominent spot on the short list of worst active sportswriters. Not only are his articles routinely poorly-written and riddled with typos, but the information he conveys so awkwardly is often completely erroneous. Most of the time this misinformation takes the form of baseless, unsubstantiated trade rumors, and while none of them ever materializes, it's still hard to prove conclusively that any particular one of them was never discussed by someone, somewhere, at some time. But this time, George finally carried his irresponsible journalistic practices too far, and I'm here to hold him accountable.August 6, 2007 -- Yankees fans are dying to see Joba Chamberlain pitch, but Joe Torre would simply like to meet the young man first. He'll get that chance today. August 6th is over, and it's safe to say that Joe did not, in fact, get that chance. Chamberlain was not called up.After yesterday's game, Mike Myers was designated for assignm...
Yankees to Introduce Joba Chamberlain to Bullpen
2007-08-03 02:21:00
Though the Yankees long-term plans continue to envision Joba Chamberlain as the team's future No. 5 starter, expect the prized prospect to soon be quietly eased into the majors as a member of the bullpen. The Yankees will follow a strategy successfully used by the Twins, who have traditionally worked young hurlers into the rotation gradually. As such, Chamberlain's arrival from the minors is widely thought to be imminent, though he may not appear as a starter until next spring.Such players in the past would have found themselves on the trading block, but general manager Brian Cashman has resisted offers to trade Chamberlain for immediate help for the team's playoff run.Cashman's estimations of Chamberlain's potential are so high that he spurned Rangers offers to trade veteran closer Eric Gagne for him, even though the decision meant Gagne would go to the arch rival Red Sox.The 20-year-old, 2006 supplemental round pick (46th overall) throws a high-90's fastball that can hit trip...
Trade Rumors - New York Yankees, Eric Gagne, Joba Chamberlain, Alan Horne
2007-07-30 16:18:00
With one more night to go until the non-waiver trading deadline ends, we should be near the peak of the trade rumor frenzy.  Because of that, I am including a bevy of chats today in hopes of uncovering a piece of intelligence I could use to my benefit over the remaining two months of the fantasy season. Of particular interest is the report from the New York Post that the Rangers' Eric Gagne cannot veto a trade to either the Yankees or the Mets.  If there is a crack in the public front the Rangers have put-up about extending Gagne rather than trading him, then the Yanks could be a good fit. [The Yankees] have relented some on Alan Horne, a pitcher who some in the organization think can be a No. 3 starter and others see using his above-average fastball/curve duo as a set-up man. This might come down to how Texas values Horne, or other arms such as Tyler Clippard, Jeff Marquez and Chase Wright. The Mets are monitoring to see if the price falls. And the Red Sox are interested...
Next up: Joba Chamberlain
2007-07-19 07:14:00
The Yankees called Edwar Ramirez on July 1st after he posted insane strikeout numbers at both Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton while sporting sub-1 ERA and WHIP numbers at both levels, as well. Next up: Joba Chamberlain. The Yankees are notorious for ramming prospects through their system, and Joba Chamberlain could be the next live arm the Yankees call. Ramirez pitched just 42 innings in the Yankee system before being called. Chamberlain, the 41st pick in the 2006 Draft, pitched 40 innings for Single-A Tampa with a 2.06 0.90 line and 51 SO?s. He was moved to Double-A Trenton where he?s thrown 34 innings with a 2.08 1.01 line and a whopping 57 SO?s. A starter at two levels for the Yankees farm system, Chamberlain could join the Yankee bullpen as an 8th inning option. Starting pitching comes at a premium, but closers are more rare. If Chamberlain arrives in New York and is successful as their critical, late inning setup man down the stretch - it wouldn?t be long before off-seas...
