Joe Borowski

Odds and Ends: Abreu, Beckett, Helton, Schilling
2007-10-26 20:47:00
Friday afternoon rumor tidbits... The Indians will probably let Kenny Lofton leave while exercising Joe Borowski's $4MM option.  No big surprise there. Nor is it a surprise that the Yankees are heavily leaning towards exercising Bobby Abreu's $16MM option. From the what might've been department: Red Sox owner John Henry was in favor of signing A.J. Burnett instead of trading for Josh Beckett.  One could make a solid argument that the Red Sox would be better off if Henry had gotten his wish.  Beckett and Julio Lugo combined for 8.6 wins at $14MM this year while Burnett and Hanley Ramirez combined for 14.8 wins at $12.4MM (according to WARP). From that same department - Tom Gage notes that the Tigers once nearly acquired Todd Helton for Tony Clark.  There were many Clark rumors from 1999-2001 before the Red Sox claimed him off waivers.  I heard Buck and McCarver talking recently about how Helton is not a product of his home park.  For the record Helton...

Indians vs. Yankees: Not David vs. Goliath

Paul Byrd is perpetuating a myth, and he must be stopped."They have Mariano Rivera, throwing 94 [mph] and carving up the strike zone, and we throw our blue-collar closer, Joe Borowski. He doesn't have the best fastball or the best ERA, but that's how we do it. That's how we've been winning all year, playing as a team and working together." --Indians starter Paul ByrdYou also throw your unhittable lefty-righty tandem of middle relievers named Rafael: Perez, and Betancourt. Both of whom had better years than Rivera, and both of whom do plenty of strike-zone carving and 94-mph-fastball throwing. Also, "Blue Collar" Borowski made $4.25 million this year. So give me a break; the world's smallest violin is already engaged elsewhere (Chicago, for example). The Indians weren't plucky underdogs confronting a big, bad, quasi-invincible Yankee machine; they might not have had the name recognition of their New York opponents, but they did have a collection of talent which won more games t...
Most Effective Moves of 2007: American League
2007-09-27 00:15:00
Most Effective Moves of 2007: AL       As the season winds down, I’ve decided to look back on some of the best and worst of 2007. This time around, I’m going to touch on what I felt were the most effective off-season & in-season GM moves. Tomorrow will see the NL edition. The Indians Signing Joe Borowski I’ve written so extensively on this topic that it’s becoming annoying (Best Free Agent Signings 2007 Revisited). To sum it up quickly, the Tribe was in need of someone that could close out games at a low cost. Borowski fits this mold perfectly. Frequent readers of the MUD will know that I’m all about save percentage, not pretty ERA’s & WHIP’s from closers. The Indians will retain control of Borowski through their team option in 2008 (another brilliant move), making this, in my mind, the top move of the 2007 season. Jack Cust finally gets a chance Ok, injuries precipitated this happening, but we have to give credit where it’s ...
Joe Borowski

Last night, the Indians Fernando Cabrera pitched two sterling innings to earn a win in extra innings following a blown save by close Joe Borowski.  Given Borowski's spectaculr blow-up against the Yankees last Thursday, he has the numbers that have the vultures amongst the closers-in-waiting community circling the fatally wounded pitcher. I am in agreement that Borowski should be on the short list of current closers ready to lose their job, but I do not believe the Indians will be so quick to cave-in to the cries of the fantasy/sabre-punditry following the awful results of last season's trading of Bob Wickman.  Recall the bullpen fell apart when all the young power arms were given a chance to close. As a result, the Indians went on a veteran closer buying splurge this past winter.  They landed Borowski, Keith Foulke and Roberto Hernandez.  I don't believe the Indians have any intention of turning important late-game innings to anyone until they work their way u...

Best 2006 Free Agent Signings - Joe Borowski

Joe Borowski - Cleveland Indians   Terms   1 Year, $4,250,000     BIO     A classic over-achiever, Borowski was drafted in the 32nd round (821st overall) in 1989 by the Chicago White Sox. He was soon traded after the draft, and resided in the Orioles system for the next six years. After a few cups of coffee, Joe found himself traded to the Braves in 1996. It was with the Braves that he experienced his first major MLB playing time, but he ended the year with the Yankees.         To make a long story short, he was released and signed by Milwaukee, and ultimately ended up with the Cubs. The confines of Wrigley produced Borowski?s first full time gig, with Joe making the full-time roster in 2002 (13 years after being drafted). He found success in Chicago, used as an often closer in 02 & 03, where he responded with ERA?s of 2.73 & 2.63 respectively. But he was almost always by passed for ?sexier? closers with better stuff. In 2004 Borowski had a disastrous year (8.02 ERA) and f...
