Guy Clark, Joe Ely, John Hiatt & Lyle Lovett At The Paramount Theater
2008-05-08 16:00:00 Donning a brace on his right foot, Guy Clark limped across stage with the aid of crutches and a thunderous applause on Monday night at the Paramount Theater. Joe Ely, John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett followed close behind and sat in the same order. The gentlemen two seats to my right diligently jotted down notes ...
Texas Tunesmith Heir Hayes Carll Bears Torch For New Generation
2008-05-07 17:35:00 Chip Frazier feels that Hayes Carll is carrying the torch for the next generation of the Texas/Americana Troubadours. He has the same aspects of humor, songs, and storytelling that made his predecessors–guys like Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Ray Wilie Hubbard–great. Bill Friskics-Warren agrees that Hayes Carll conjures up thoughts ...

March ?08 Album Review Wrap-Up
2008-04-09 14:58:00 Carlene Carter - Stronger Born the daughter of June Carter and Carl Smith and step-daughter to Johnny Cash made Carlene Carter an heir to a rich line of country music nobility, but that doesn’t mean you’ll finder her latest album dripping with steel guitars, fiddles, and hillbilly twang. Stronger is at times beautiful and poignant, ...

Album Review: Joe Ely & Joel Guzman - Live Cactus!
2008-03-10 14:05:00 Interstate 10 spans from coast to coast, but perhaps the most lonesome stretch belongs to West Texas. Aside from occasional wildlife sightings and a windmill farm it’s a desolate view–not what one would refer to as a scenic route, but it’s the fastest means of travel from one destination to the next. One could even ...

And The Bands Played On: Big State Festival Day Two
2007-10-17 00:59:00 Kelly Willis and The Wrights were on the brink of starting their 12:30 sets when we arrived at the festival grounds on Sunday. Writing the Saturday wrap-up kept us from showing up earlier to watch Colin Gilmore and Ashley Ray. Our famished stomachs led us straight to the nearest food while we half-heartedly listened to ...
Jack Ingram Caged By Brad Paisley
2007-09-05 17:10:00 This past Monday night I was fortunate enough to catch a Gary Allan show at Nutty Brown Cafe. His stage props appeared more death metal than country, but he was in fine form as he covered most of his newer songs — only traveling past Smoke Rings In The Dark for a handful of songs. ...
Album Review: Joe Ely - Silver City
2007-03-07 17:41:09 Joe Ely - Silver City It was barely a month ago that Joe Ely put out Happy Songs From Rattlesnake Gulch, something he describes as the “rough and tumble” side of his road life. Today he released Silver City, an album of ten songs he wrote between 1968 and 1972 but weren’t recorded until the past year and a half. I didn’t review Rattlesnake Gulch here on The 9513, but I did listen to it and it wasn’t my particular style of music. After listening to Silver City I’m happy to say that I actually enjoyed the album. The album starts off with the title track, “Silver City,” which has been recorded before, but this time it’s just Ely. My favorite track “Wounded Knee” is a heavy duty song if you listen to the lyrics - “my daughter was raped by the calvary, I wish them all to hell.” Ely calls the album the “easy side” of things. It’s just his voice, the guitar, and some of the first songs he wrote ... |
