Photo Credit:Chris Trotman/Getty Imagesfor NASCAR via NASCAR PR)After Joe Gibbs Racing basically dominating most of the Nationwide Series races this season with 14 wins, a month ago NASCAR issued a technical bulletin with an engine rule change and while I applaud NASCAR in finally noticing that there is a problem in the Nationwide Series with trying to put all of the teams on equal footing after the Joe Gibbs Racing #18 and #20 Toyotas have had their way in the series, this engine rule change isn’t exactly what I was thinking, I would have preferred instead of penalizing the Toyotas, why not just allow the other three manufacturers (Chevrolet, Ford and Dodge) to bring some new parts or even like Chevy a new engine to the series so they can step up even further, what a handy cap for all of the Toyotas and it was just JGR that was the problem. (Read more…)That’s what I wrote last month following the engine rules change, however also in that piece, I wrote that it most likely wou...

Condolences to the families of Alex from TOK, Joe Gibbs, & comedian Rea
2008-03-01 04:24:00
Alex of the group TOK (featured on the left in the picture above), lost his father this week. After suffering a stroke and a subsequent heart attack Derrick McCalla died on Saturday. This is the third recent loss for Alex, his brother Gavin was murdered and his death was the motivation for TOK’s most successful single to date, Footprints. He also recently lost his grandmother. Joe Gibbs died on last Thursday of a heart attack in Jamaica. Gibbs was a well respected producer who was influential during the late 60’s and 70’s roots era. Gibbs was 65 years old. It’s being reported that comedian Real Idiot was killed by police in Jamaica, details so far have been sketchy but reports are that drugs and a firearm were involved.
Joe Gibbs RIP
2008-02-27 17:50:00
LaRon Landry is the Joe Gibbs of NHRA POWERade Series
2008-01-24 19:41:00
I don't know what that means. Try deciphering this: The New York Giants and Washington Redskins may be fierce rivals in the National Football League's NFC East Division, but it won't prevent Redell Harris from proudly displaying the numbers of a prominent player from each team on his new S&S Buell Pro Stock Motorcycle during the 2008 NHRA POWERade Series. Harris, a veteran two-wheel competitor, proudly announced the formation of his new team, one that features his cousin, Corey Webster, who plays cornerback for the Giants, and good friend LaRon Landry, the Redskins' free safety sensation and first-team NFL All-Rookie Defensemen... Befitting their playoff status and family ties, Harris says Webster's CWeb 30 in Giants colors will be on the front of the motorcycle while the Redskins' colors are on the back with LaRon Landry Motorsports Dirty 30. So Joe Gibbs is a Nascar guru, and now LaRon Landry is breaking out in NHRA which apparently relates to drag racing. A buell is pro...

Joe Gibbs retires for family reasons
2008-01-09 22:18:00
My suspicion about the reason for Joe Gibbs' departure from the head coach and president positions with the Washington Redskins ended up being confirmed. His departure was directly related to family concerns. Gibbs' grandson is fighting against leukemia so it's obviously understandable that he would want to go back to his family in Charlotte to offer moral support. The only thing that Washington Redskins fans can reasonably do is send him out with our best wishes, hopes and prayers. His legacy will always be valued here.----

Joe Gibbs Steps Down As Coach & Team President of the Redskins..
2008-01-09 00:18:00
For many Redskins fans, including myself, today was a melancholy day as Joe Gibbs stepped down as coach and team president of the Washington Redskins. He knew he needed to walk away from the team to be closer to his wife, children and grandchildren, as well he knew he could not devote his full energy to coaching anymore. After the year he had, no matter if you thought he should have stayed or the game passed him by, you cannot argue he handled the organization and the tragedy involving Sean Taylor with nothing short of impeccable dignity. In the end, there was no real return to glory; however, the way he represented the sport and a community during his second tour of duty with the Redskins only reinforced why he's one of the greatest coaches of all time.
Joe Gibbs resigns as Washington Redskins head coach
2008-01-08 15:10:00
Joe Gibbs has resigned as head coach and team president of the Washington Redskins, reports Associated Press. He had seemed noncommittal and outright unenthusiastic at times when asked about his future at Monday's end of season press conference. Despite the outward signs though, Gibbs' resignation still comes as a shocker, coming just days after he had returned the Redskins to the postseason off a four game winning streak. My initial suspicion is that outside family issues are prompting this departure but another press conference by Gibbs later this afternoon may provide a better indication. Gibbs' second tenure as head coach obviously did not go as well as the first one but he'll always get credit for the way he led the 'Skins through the tragedy of the murder of Sean Taylor. It was in such times of crisis that Gibbs excelled as a genuine leader of men. To say the least, Joe Gibbs will be missed here in the Washington, D.C. area.----Relevant links: Washington Post, AP via Wash...

According to the Associated Press, as of 9 AM, Joe Jackson Gibbs has retired as President and head coach of the Washington Redskins.  This marks the end of the second tour of duty for the Hall of Fame Coach, who also coached the Redskins from 1980-92.  Joe Gibbs second stint in Washington has

The NFL Picks Column: Wild Card Edition
2008-01-04 08:17:00
Apparently, I've graduated from "Scribe" to "Analyst" at Bleacher Report. In celebration, I got stupid-drunk and wrote this wonderful picks column! In case you missed it, I've been pretty busy this week. I tried to provide hope to the hopeless by telling everyone why their teams were going to win this weekend. My first 2 part Bleacher Report column (part 1: NFC and part 2: AFC)!Now that I'm done shilling my own work, here's a couple of quick NFL news related items before I get to the picks:It's good to see the voters getting the post-season NFL awards correct for a change. So far Adrian Peterson winning offensive rookie of the year, with Joe Thomas in second, was right on the money. And Bill Belichick winning coach of the year was surprising considering how many people he ticked off, but dead right. How can you go 16-0 and not win coach of the year?Cam Cameron, we hardly knew ye. I'm just glad Parcells stayed away from the New England front office and coaching staff.I still th...
Joe Gibbs: Coach of the Year?
2007-12-18 20:59:00
In 2006 the Washington Redskins ended the season with a 5-11 record. An uncharacteristically slow offseason netted them very few additions to that same 5-11 squad. They lost a talented Left Guard in Derrick Dockery in free agency as well as a few other veteran players. The starting Quarterback in 2007 was to be Jason Campbell who had only 7 previous starts. Adding insult to injury the Redskins 2007 schedule pitted them against a league high 9 playoff teams from 2006. It is safe to say that the Redskins 2007 team was not expected to do very well. Most projections had them winning from five to seven games in 2007.Click here to read more!
The players will not give up on Joe Gibbs
2007-11-13 23:14:00
Not all of them, at least. Mike Wise's column today was read after I'd visited the Fire Joe Gibbs Now website (which is apparently brought to you by Don and Mike) and there couldn't be a bigger contrast to how (some) fans are treating Coach and how (some) of his players are rallying behind him. It's a great piece in aggregate though I'm only quoting players throwing their support behind a Coach they still very much want to help win. Jon Jansen, for instance "This is Washington. This is the Washington Redskins," offensive tackle Jon Jansen said. "This is a lot of history. This is Joe Gibbs."... "Nobody wants to be the team that doesn't get Joe back to the Super Bowl or back to the playoffs," Jansen said. "I don't know what Joe wants to do personally, but I like playing for him. He's been good for me and my family. And I would feel terrible knowing that I couldn't help him out if this was his last year." Chris Samuels: "Coach Gibbs is the best coach I've ever had," [Chris] s...

Joe Gibbs Racing Goes to Toyota
2007-09-06 03:25:00
With the announcement that JGR will run Toyotas next year, a new era has arrived in Nascar Nextel Cup racing. The Toyota team that has fared the best in the current season is the Bill Davis team, the only one with a history before the 2007 season. Now Toyota has reached into the area of teams ...
Could this really come true: Joe Gibbs Racing to Toyota?
2007-08-31 01:42:00
So let me get this straight, after months and I mean months of speculations (rumors), that all of a sudden there is so-called breaking news on NASCAR Now (that was featured for the last day or so on the internet) on the Joe Gibbs Racing – Toyota joining forces saga. So this is how it’s to happen, after a Tuesday night meeting with GM, the next morning (Wednesday morning) at Gibbs Racing, JGR will be making it official, Gibbs leaving GM to go to Toyota, oh brother… first it’s not breaking news…This would be an interesting twist in the General Motors saga, one of GM’s top teams including a two-time championship driver leaving a winning combination and stable that includes Hendrick, RCR and DEI to go to Toyota, really now, I know that this would be huge, but I really find this hard to believe even in a world of money and manufacturer support, I guess it could happen, but why?Why would Joe Gibbs Racing, who has one of the hottest driver lineups in the Nextel Cup Series with ...
This will not be the last year of Joe Gibbs
2007-08-20 18:28:00
There isn't actually any new news to that effect although Mark Maske, a superlative football writer with loads of credibility that I completely lack, recently affirmed that Joe Gibbs is an honest man worth taking seriously: hR. Do you think Joe Gibbs intends to coach for five years, even if the team disappoints again this season? MM. I take him at his word on that, yes. Big congratulations are in order to both Maske and Hail Redskins, the former for his recent publication, which I will buy and the latter for securing and subsequently executing professionally one damn fine interview with the Maske. A bevy of topics are covered ranging from the Redskin specific to the NFC East generally, as that is the subject of Maske's book -- which is why you will buy it too. These aren't the droids you're looking for. The real reason that Joe Gibbs won't leave this year is because that contingency is based entirely on a disastrous 2007, which could lead to his premature evacuation (giggle). ...
Joe Gibbs Racing signs Kyle Busch to drive in ?08

Adam Schein: Joe Gibbs under comparable scrutiny to Chris Henry and Mike Vi
2007-07-06 17:56:00
Adam Schein at Fox Sports recently made a list of nine players/coaches under scrutiny in 2007 (hat tip: Blogging the Boys). Nine is a fairly arbitrary number (why not 10?) so I have to believe that he chose these nine and excluded Mr. 10 for good reason. Among the nine, scrutiny can mean a lot of things. For instance, as regards Mike Vick (listed), we're talking about legal scrutiny. The scrutiny Chris Henry will weather relates specifically to disciplinary action taken against him earlier this season. In Joe Gibbs' case, we're speaking strictly to the Washington Redskins disappointing 5-11 season in 2006, for which he is not singularly to blame though he is ultimately accountable. Before we get to his evaluation of Coach Gibbs, let me just say that I think the level of scrutiny that Mike Vick and Chris Henry are under as of this moment are far beyond anything Joe Gibbs deserves, by a matter of degree. Also of interest are the omissions: Pacman Jones and Tank Johnson are among p...
Joe Gibbs is exhausted by trouble
2007-06-05 21:03:00
Said Coach: People are tired of getting up in the morning and picking up the paper and reading about somebody in trouble. Let's face it: The only way you're going to get people's attention is you've got to be strong. Speaking from experience, I've failed at getting people's attention throughout my entire life, and it just so happens I am ripped perhaps in need of work, physically. Coach Gibbs is referring to Roger Goodell referring to Tank Johnson in his recent eight game suspension of Tank for a gun conviction. This comes shortly after a year long suspension of Pacman Jones (10 weeks actually, if he played his cards right) and of Chris Henry for eight games of the season for various infractions. Pacman doesn't have many defenders out there, though here is one complements my blogging colleague Jimmy at Music City Miracles: Maybe [Pacman] should look at getting convicted of something.  The commissioner handed Tank Johnson an eight game suspension today.  The suspe...
Joe Gibbs innovates his guts out
2007-05-29 21:03:00
Hat tip to Extreme Skins for finding this Bucky Brooks H-Back mention. Full disclosure before we begin: I gave Bucky a really hard time this March for overusing the word "explosive" to describe draft prospects. I found his analysis at the time to be quite bland and uninformative. The small segment repeated below is much better, and I give due credit to Brooks for a job well done. The H-back is replacing the Fullback on offense. The conventional fullback has slowly been replaced by the H-back on offense. The H-back, a hybrid tight end/fullback, was originally brought to prominence by Joe Gibbs during his first tour of duty with the Washington Redskins in the 1980s. But more teams have been using the H-back as part of multiple tight end sets to keep defenses guessing. Because an H-back lines up in the backfield or along the line and is used in motion, teams can show multiple formations without changing personnel. On one play, the H-back can line up in the backfield and be a lead bl...
Joe Gibbs either mildly upset, indifferent, or homicidal over absences
2007-05-11 18:56:00
I would hat tip this morning's Post article on Shawn Springs and Sean Taylor's absence, but everyone is on it but me. Check my Blogroll for proof. I supress my tendency to have kittens anytime something of slight interest happens in Redskins' nation that might be detrimental towards the team. In this case I'm going to fight the urge to go all histrionic over those absences and will present what documented from Coach Gibbs who is, unsurprisingly, upset. Per Howard Bryant: "With Sean Taylor, I've had no contact whatsoever," Gibbs said. "I'm not aware of anything there. That's about all I can say about it. I've had no contact." "With Shawn Springs, I've had a lot of talks this offseason," Gibbs said. "We kind of made up our decision how we were going to proceed this year and that we were going to go ahead with our normal situation with him contractually and every other way. I had a sit-down with him in Phoenix. Up to two weeks ago we thought we were in real good shape with hi...
Joe Gibbs: Scout staff shake up just a rumor
2007-05-01 21:54:00
This March it was rumored that the Redskins were going to clean house. And then multiple sources produced possible GM candidates for the Redskins: Tom Modrak and Bobby DePaul. Either joining the team would have entailed some shift in the current decision making structure as team President Joe Gibbs would have to defer some personnel power to the newcomers. Vinny Cerrato, if not fired, would also have to take on a more limited role. To many Redskins fans this would be a welcome change. Coach put the quietus on such speculation in yesterday's Post (scroll to bottom): There have been repeated rumors among NFL scouts and execs that the Redskins might shake up their scouts and personnel department, all the way up to vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato after the draft, but Gibbs quashed the notion. "I felt like it's been a pretty smooth operation, so I don't know where the rumors come from." Although the current decision making structure did produce a competitive post s...
Predictably, Joe Gibbs hates the schedule
2007-04-12 19:01:00
Which surprises no one, as he always hates the schedule. Per a busy Mark Maske in this morning's Post: The NFL released its regular season schedule yesterday and Washington Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs, as always, regarded the development as bad news... "I always kind of start out saying, 'I never saw one I liked,' " Gibbs said at Redskins Park soon after the schedule was unveiled. What specifically irked Coach? You can watch his press conference at the official site (as of right now it is the top link on Redskins TV on the frontpage). He doesn't like opening two of the three first games against NFC East opponents, he doesn't like closing two of three against NFC East opponents, and he doesn't like the Bye Week after just three games. Given that nearly 40% of our games necessarily are against NFC East opponents, I don't think there's really any satisfactory way to schedule those games. If we had one to open and one to close, Gibbs would likely express frustration with the clumpi...
Joe Gibbs: Visiting with JeMarcus Russell evidence of nothing
2007-04-12 18:34:00
Although there wasn't any doubt here that the 'Skins visit with Russell was evidence of nothing interesting, Joe Gibbs made that point official scripture per Mark Maske and this morning's Post:Louisiana State quarterback JaMarcus Russell made a pre-draft visit to Redskins Park yesterday, but Coach Joe Gibbs cautioned not to read too much into it... ...NFL teams generally meet with as many draft prospects as they can, and club officials said their meeting with Russell was nothing more than making sure they prepare properly. "It has nothing to do with Jason," Gibbs said. "We brought in every player in the first round, just about. . . . You're doing your homework. You're doing your due diligence. . . . We feel like we're set at quarterback." Nothing to see here folks. PFT brings up an additional, related point. Quality face time with potential stars is never a negative, even if they don't end up as Redskins: For the Redskins, who typically add most of their new players via ...
Fact Check: Norv Turner/Joe Gibbs V2.0 Win %
2007-03-29 23:47:00
Surely this isn't right, so I need some Fact Checking. Post inspired by a Curly R Caption Contest where winners may or may not get a Joe Theismann poster. Intriguing, no? While trying, and failing, to think of a clever caption for the picture (which shows Norv Turner gesticulating at Joe Gibbs -- Ben's word, not mine. I think that means he was trying to fart on him? I fail engrish), I thought: wouldn't it be interesting if Norv Turner compared his tenure in Washington with Gibbs' second tenure in Washington? They both experienced more failure than victory, they both went to the posteason just once (winning a game than being eliminated), and they both suffered the Dan Snyder. So there are some parallels here, perhaps more than we know... Norval's record as the Head Coach of the Washington Redskins: Won 49 of 109 games, .450 Winning Percentage. Remember that Robiskie closed out the 2000 season 1-2. Joe Gibbs v2.0 record as the Head Coach of the Washington Redskins: Won 21 of 48 g...
Joe Gibbs at Georgia Tech Pro Day
2007-03-16 16:55:00
There is no doubt that Calvin Johnson is a phenomenal talent, perhaps a once in a decade/lifetime/whatever-tempor-al-cliche-you-want talent. But the Redskins simply have more pressing needs at other positions to make an aggressive pursuit of Johnson possible. All that said, we still want to get a look at the guy. Per Atlanta Journal Constitution with a hat tip to Ben Maller: WR Calvin Johnson and other former teammates took part in Georgia Tech Pro Day. Among those in attendance was Oakland Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin, holder of the No. 1 pick in April's NFL draft. Johnson noticed that Kiffin was in the crowd of logoed golf shirts, stop watches and clip boards. "He's a great guy, I met him at the [NFL scouting] combine," Johnson said. "I talked to him out here a little bit. It's always good talking to those guys." Johnson is rated as the top talent in the draft, but the Raiders may opt for LSU quarterback JeMarcus Russell, whom Kiffin watched in Baton Rouge on Wednesday. Washi...
Joe Gibbs allows team to go home for Offseason workout
2007-02-26 23:51:01
Howard Bryant reported at the Post last week that Coach Gibbs will allow players to workout away from Redskins park. I commented in December that a number of Redskins players were not keen on Joe Gibbs year-round workout. Some of the criticisms I thought were founded, namely that Defensive Linemen were doing the same workouts as Wide Receivers -- that doesn't make sense. Ben pointed out that the old Joe Gibbs wouldn't have stood for this nonsense complaining. He would've demanded they show up anyways, and in all likelihood he might've just won a Superbowl to spite the whiners. Your philosophy on such matters will likely hinge on how you feel about incredibly high paid men complaining about anything. A part of me wants to tell them to stop being crybaby prima donnas and show up. Anectodes abound of old school NFL coaches who asked players to put up or shut up and went on to win, thus cementing that attitude as prevailing wisdom to many Football fans for eternity. Yet another ...
