Welcome to the Bronx Zoo, Joe Girardi
2008-02-14 12:01:00 So the Joe Girardi era begins with a New York Yankee-sized problem, as Andy Pettitte, his best big-game pitcher, asks for some extra time to recover from the nightmare of both admitting to taking human growth hormone and essentially calling old buddy Roger Clemens a liar according to John Harper of the New York Daily News. In a way, it's only fitting, partly because Joe Torre annually had some type of controversy greet him at the door for spring training, and partly because no manager in baseball was better at dealing with such issues. Indeed, Torre was best at managing during tough times, whether it was holding his Yankee teams together during periods of poor, uninspired play in recent years, or keeping the inevitable distractions from becoming an issue inside the clubhouse. Girardi has one of those challenges right from the start.

Joe Girardi: Congrats But No Congrats
2007-10-30 15:32:00 I’m torn. I’m acting like a selfish little brat right now. I should be happy for Joe Girardi on grabbing the New York Yankees managerial position, but I’m not. Call me a bitter Marlins fan, but what should have been a follow up season to build on turned out to be a ...

Joe Girardi To Be Named Manager of the Yankees...
2007-10-29 19:58:00 It looks like the Yankees will name Joe Girardi the manager of the Yankees rather than the favored Don Mattingly. It may cause many to wonder what will happen to Mattingly, as it seems he will lose his dream job. From the New York Daily News: The Yankees will reportedly offer Joe Girardi the manager's job vacated by Joe Torre. An official announcement is expected as early as Monday afternoon.Club sources have insisted throughout the process that it has been a close call among Girardi, Don Mattingly and Tony Pena, but the deciding factors seem to have been the former Yankee catcher's analytical approach, experience with handling a pitching staff and the job the 43-year-old Girardi did managing the Florida Marlins in 2006.Mattingly, while one of the most popular Yankees of all-time inside and outside the locker room, is a favorite of George Steinbrenner, but lacked the experience Cashman preferred."As much as Cash likes and respects Donnie, you have to wonder if he would trust his o...

New York Yankees: Alex Rodriguez, Joe Girardi and Joe Torre
2007-10-29 15:28:00 The big news this morning is not the Red Sox winning their second World Series in four seasons, but Alex Rodriguez's decision to opt out of the remaining three years and $91 MM remaining on his contract to test the free agent market. I think ESPN's Peter Gammons summed-up the initial reactions nicely this morning. He said, and I paraphrase, Dustin Pedroia and Jon Lester are celebrating a World Series, and Alex Rodriguez has never played in one. Maybe there's a reason for that. Those are extremely harsh words more appropriate to the blogosphere than from the national baseball reporter for ESPN. If Gammons feels that way, I can't wait for the scorching of the Earth in the local New York papers and media. In other Yankees news, the team appears to have settled on Joe Girardi as its new manager. I reviewed what a Girardi managerial tenure would look like for the Dodgers and hold it would look the same for the Yankees. Most criticsm will center aro...

Baseball News From Yesterday - Joe Girardi To Manage The Dodgers
2007-10-26 15:47:00 ESPN's Buster Olney reported a rumor that Yankees' mangerial candidate Joe Girardi might end up with the Dodgers if the Yankees do not hire him to do the same job in the Bronx. It made me wonder how Girardi would run the offense in LA if he were hired. To get an idea, I lloked at his actual behavior in past situations. For fantasy purposes, this takes the form of playing veterans over rookies and stealing bases. Girardi has just one year of managerial experience - the 2006 Florida Marlins. The team had no established/declining veterans, but did have a some journeyman-type players who could be expected to see significant playing time if the manager were inclined towards veterans rather than the unestablished rookies. Two players that would fit the bill are UT Alfredo Almezaga and CR Wes Helms. Each player did get significant use. Almezaga appeared in 132 games and got 334 ABs, and Helms appeared in 140 games with 240 ABs. However, neither s...

How Close is the End for Torre? [J. Mark English]
2007-10-10 03:34:00 Is it only a matter of time before Joe Torre feels the sharp end of the ax from the Boss? Yahoo News has the latest:Joe Torre and his Yankees players began the wait Tuesday for George Steinbrenner's decision: Will he keep the manager or let him go after 12 consecutive postseason appearances?Few players were at Yankee Stadium, a day after their season-ending 6-4 loss to Cleveland, the third straight year New York was eliminated in the first round. Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Phillips and Jose Molina packed their gear for the long winter. Don Mattingly, mentioned as a possible replacement along with Joe Girardi and Tony La Russa, said succeeding Torre would be difficult. "It's like following John Wooden or something," Mattingly said. "This guy wins championship after championship and we're in the playoffs in every year. You know, it's really ? it's pretty much a no-win situation for someone coming in here to be able to live up to the expectations or live up to what he did. It's not g...

Looking Towards October
2007-06-26 22:35:00 The division is out of reach for the Yankees this year it seems. However, the Wild Card may be the most attainable goal for the Bronx Bombers. With the way they're playing, nothing seems possible, though. One of my baseball colleagues at my job observed that the Yankees pulled Joe Girardi from Tuesday night's broadcast in Baltimore. Most likely, it was because the Yankees didn't want Girardi to have to discuss why he turned down the managerial job with the Orioles. Also, the Yes Network didn't want the Girardi story to become a distraction to the game. As my friend quipped, "The way they're playing, they can use all the distractions that come their way." He's right. The only thing as a Yankees fan this writer has to look forward to is the All Star Game. After that, it's the long slide until the end of the season and my interest then focuses on football and whichever of the "New Jersey" teams are doing well. You just know that there are hunting and fishing magazines laying aro...

Joe Girardi Turns Down O's Offer...
2007-06-21 18:50:00 According to ESPN, Joe Girardi today turned down the Orioles' offer to become their new manager...After thinking he might join early this week, I had a feeling he'd turn it down because of the state of the team and as well the chance of other, more high profile jobs opening up. As well, I don't know if he was willing to uproot his family from the Midwest to come work in Baltimore...I guess it leaves the possibility of Davey Johnson coming back. Also on the docket may be Dusty Baker and Rick Dempsey. At this point, considering how things have come about with the Orioles, anything can happen...

Joe Girardi: Sleeping With the Enemy?
2007-02-27 11:01:01 I’ve been a major supporter of Joe Girardi since day one and I stuck by him when Marlins management pushed him out the door after one season. I thought he got a raw deal. He was able to get more out of a team full of rookies then any manager has done in history. My opinion on Joe started to sour after he was canned and I had learned how poorly he managed the pitching staff and potentially ruined one of our aces arms for the start of the 2007 season. Now this report is surfacing from Sign on San Diego that Joe Girardi had given Jon Lieber a phone call after the Marlins put a whooping on him, to give him advice to improve his season. From Sign on San Diego… ?He just mentioned that the hitters said everything that was coming in was just very flat,? Lieber said, attributing his turnabout to that conversation. ?Basically I was underneath the ball. I wasn’t on top of the ball like I should have been. And that’s why the ball doesn’t have that crispness wh...

I?m Starting to Like This Joe Girardi Move
2007-01-29 22:29:02 We are starting to see some of the reasons Joe Girardi wasn’t as good of a manager as everyone made him out to be last season. After finding out Anibal Sanchez has been dealing with some shoulder issues, we now find out the injury that ended Josh Johnson’s season short last year is still bothering him and flaring up even more. Josh Johnson said on Monday that he experienced some discomfort in his right biceps/triceps area on Jan. 19 while throwing off flat ground at the team’s Spring Training facility in Jupiter. The pitcher has shut down his throwing regimen as a result. The health of Johnson’s right arm is a concern, stemming back to the final month of last season. During a Sept. 12 start against the Mets at Dolphin Stadium, Johnson felt tightness in his right forearm and was lifted after five innings. On that rainy night, the game was delayed a total of two hours and eight minutes. The first delay was 46 minutes before the first pitch, and in the top of...
