In a way, it's only fitting, partly because Joe Torre annually had some type of controversy greet him at the door for spring training, and partly because no manager in baseball was better at dealing with such issues. Indeed, Torre was best at managing during tough times, whether it was holding his Yankee teams together during periods of poor, uninspired play in recent years, or keeping the inevitable distractions from becoming an issue inside the clubhouse. Girardi has one of those challenges right from the start.

ESPN's Buster Olney reported a rumor that Yankees' mangerial candidate Joe Girardi might end up with the Dodgers if the Yankees do not hire him to do the same job in the Bronx.  It made me wonder how Girardi would run the offense in LA if he were hired.  To get an idea, I lloked at his actual behavior in past situations.  For fantasy purposes, this takes the form of playing veterans over rookies and stealing bases. Girardi has just one year of managerial experience - the 2006 Florida Marlins.  The team had no established/declining veterans, but did have a some journeyman-type players who could be expected to see significant playing time if the manager were inclined towards veterans rather than the unestablished rookies.  Two players that would fit the bill are UT Alfredo Almezaga and CR Wes Helms. After finding out Anibal Sanchez has been dealing with some shoulder issues, we now find out the injury that ended Josh Johnson’s season short last year is still bothering him and flaring up even more. Josh Johnson said on Monday that he experienced some discomfort in his right biceps/triceps area on Jan. 19 while throwing off flat ground at the team’s Spring Training facility in Jupiter.
