Ben Sheets outpitches Johan Santana and Milwaukee Brewers beat New York Met
2008-04-12 23:17:00
Ben Sheets ruined Johan Santana’s Shea Stadium debut, outpitching the Mets’ new ace in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 5-3 win over New York on Saturday. Home runs by Bill Hall, Rickie Weeks and Gabe Kapler helped Milwaukee come from behind and Sheets (2-0) overcame a shaky start to help Brewers end a three-game losing streak. Read the ...
Johan Santana: Temper Expectations
2008-04-07 02:07:00
Poor Johan Santana!  There is no way he can get the 20+ wins some touts project for him if he doesn't win games in which he allows just one run.  I never believed the hype of 22 wins as the strategic environment of modern baseball does not allow a pitcher two things.  Enough starts to get there. 34 starts are not enough to get 20 Wins.  A reliance on the bullpen that does not allow starting pitchers to go deep enough into games to benefit from late-inning comebacks. That aside, am I the only one who wondered what the heck Carlos beltran was doing with the bat on his shoulder on an 0-2 fastball down the middle with two outs in the 9th inning?  I flashed back to a similar scene in the 2006 NLCS against Adam Wainwright.
Ian Kennedy? Who Are the Yankees Kidding?
2008-04-05 06:45:00
If you believe the reports that surfaced during the off season, Johan Santana was an Ian Kennedy away from become a New York Yankee. Ian freaking Kennedy? Are you kidding me? The same guy who was on the wrong end of a 13-4 defeat to the mighty Tampa Bay Rays? Seventy pitches and six runs in only two-and-a-third innings from the guy you just couldn?t give up to get Johan Santana. Against the Rays. How did I not spend more time on this when it happened? The Yankees are a World Series-level offensive team relying on two rookies, two senior citizens, and an ace that hasn?t won a big game (or pitched well in a big game) since joining the Yankees. The reason why Chien-Ming Wang?s nineteen win season was ?quiet? last year is because he didn?t have a single ?loud? win. No big wins. No statement games. A few big losses, especially against the Indians in the playoffs. How can a team with a $200,000,000 payroll go into the season relying on THAT guy to be their ace? The Job...
Mets LHP Johan Santana pitches 6 sharp innings in 7-0 victory over Baltimor
2008-03-21 04:05:00
The New York Mets got a sharp outing from Johan Santana and took a close look at reliever Duaner Sanchez on Thursday night. Santana pitched five-hit ball for six innings in a 7-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles on a cool night at Tradition Field. The left-hander struck out seven and walked one. But Mets officials were probably more concerned with Sanchez, who allowed one hit in a scoreless inning. Read the full story.
Johan Santana takes his cut in Mets? 10-3 loss to Cardinals (AP)
2008-03-16 01:34:00
Johan Santana is looking forward to taking his cuts in the National League. Traded from Minnesota to the Mets last month, Santana had his first plate appearance of spring training Saturday when he grounded out against Adam Wainwright during New York’s 10-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. “At least I made contact,” Santana said. Johan Santana shuts down Red Sox; Mets get Beltran and Delgado back from in
2008-03-11 01:21:00
Johan Santana nearly wound up pitching for the Boston Red Sox this spring instead of against them. The two-time Cy Young Award winner shut down the World Series champions Monday, and the New York Mets got Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado back from injuries in a 1-1 tie with Boston that was called after 10 ...
Trendspotting: Johan Santana, Andruw Jones
2008-03-04 15:18:00
So I went out looking for trends in some mock drafts this weekend, and I witnessed a fellow drafter take Jake Peavy ahead of Johan Santana. He was admittedly biased (Yankee fan) and immediately chastised, but I began to wonder about the effects of changing leagues for a pitcher. In thinking about Trendspotting, I went with "change of scenery" as my theme and included Andruw Jones as well.Johan Santana: In 2004, his best season in Minnesota, Santana struck out 265 batters in 228 innings. His strikeout total fell last year to 235 in only 219 innings, still good for third-best in the league (behind Peavy's 240 and Scott Kazmir's 236). This season, I like his strikeout total to rise astronomically, because all the lineups he faces will replace designated hitters with pitchers. How have other pitchers fared when jumping from league to league? Bronson Arroyo, when he came to Cincinnati from Boston in 2006, struck out 184 batters in 240 innings, as compared to only 100 in 205 innings the...
Johan Santana and Erik Bedard touched up in debuts for new teams (AP)
2008-03-01 02:25:00
Johan Santana and Erik Bedard definitely showed something in their debuts for new teams: Even baseball’s best pitchers need time to tune up in spring training. Acquired in a blockbuster trade this offseason, Santana gave up a three-run homer to Juan Gonzalez in the first inning of his first start with the Mets on ...

The house lights dimmed, music was turned up and a video montage of Johan Santana highlights started rolling on a screen so wide you could almost see the seams on every pitch. New ace Johan Santana helps New York Mets move past 2007 collapse (AP)
2008-02-06 20:58:00
Johan Santana arrived at Shea Stadium on Wednesday, put on his No. 57 New York Mets jersey for the first time and said he anticipated little difficulty in adjusting to pitching before some of baseball’s most demanding fans. “I think the game is the same,” he said. “I’m not going to let that affect what ...
New ace Johan Santana helps Mets move past 2007 collapse (AP)
2008-02-06 11:41:00
Johan Santana is more than a No. 1 starter to the New York Mets. He’s the big prize that makes it easier to move beyond last year’s collapse. “Somewhat it allows us to officially, kind of completely shut the book on ‘07,” Mets third baseman David Wright said Tuesday. “It kind of takes away from, ...
Johan Santana makes Mets an NL favorite, but he?s not the only ace around (
2008-02-05 23:10:00
Now that Johan Santana is penciled in atop the Mets’ rotation, some folks sound ready to hand New York the National League pennant. Not so fast. Don’t forget, the Mets didn’t even make the playoffs last year. And they’re not the only team to add an ace. The NL West champion Arizona Diamondbacks acquired Dan ...
Happy non-official Holiday!
2008-02-03 18:41:00
As I wrestled through the aisles of my local Fortune 500 grocers, I was reminded how today is the most holiday-like of non-holidays. Usually Sunday-morning grocery shopping is a rather tranquil affair. Not today ? people with overflowing grocery carts and a few women looking a little too stressed about the day?s preparations. ...

Johan Santana was right there in the room as his agent and the New York Mets haggled over a colossal contract. The New York Mets Welcome Johan Santana With Open Arms And An Open Bank Vau
2008-02-02 11:52:00
Yesterday, the New York Mets succesfully signed lefty pitcher Johan Santana to a six year deal worth a total of $137.5 million bucks. To say he is locked up would be an utter understatement. I say good for the Mets! They are my favorite National League team, by far. The deal makes Santana the highest paid pitcher in all of baseball and the fourth highest paid PLAYER in the entire big leagues. Ahead of him are Yankees Alex Rodriguez at $275 million and Derek Jeter at $189 million. Rounding out that elite quartet is our very own Manny Ramirez at $160 million. So I must say congratulations to Johan Santana, and to his suddenly richer agent, AND to the Metsies. Santana will be pitching in the National League, so I wish him the very best of everything. With him, the Mets will go a long way, and his aquisition will ease the sudden September departure that every Met fan and team member went through at the end of the '07 season. In Boston Red Sox news, Manny Ramirez spoke to the media in Te...
Johan Santana Is Coming To Town
2008-02-02 05:14:00
Santana coming to the Mets?  That's way too good to be true.  Has it really happened?  This has not settled in yet.  The Mets simply filled up their one true weakness with the best pitcher in baseball-who's still in his prime.  This is one of the best moves the Mets have ever made and Santana is worth every penny of the 150 million plus he'll make in 7 years.  The Mets have become clear favorites in the NL all of the sudden and are 2nd in early Las Vegas odds of winning the World Series.  Again, too good to be true!  The Mets needed him and they got him.  I'm thrilled the negotiations are over and I can't wait to the Press conference, assuming he passes his physical next week.  The Mets stole Santana, giving up main parts of a mediocre farm system.  They kept their 2 top prospects-Martinez and Pelfrey.  Huge victory for Omar, who just saved his jobs for a few years.  Can't wait till Opening Day!

Mets Finalize Deal With Johan Santana
2008-02-01 19:20:00
6:15pm: SI.com is reporting that the deal is for $137.5MM for six years with a $7MM signing bonus added to Santana's 2008 salary. The total deal is worth $150.75MM.  Ken Rosenthal confirms it.  So, the Mets had to give in on six guaranteed years. 5:42pm: WFAN in New York City is reporting that the New York Mets and Johan Santana have agreed to a contract extension. The details have not been released but it is believed the deal is for six years beginning in 2009 with an average annual salary of $22MM. The deal is now pending a physical. Earlier the Mets had requested and were granted a two hour extension to the 5:00 pm deadline for an extension. by Cork Gaines
Johan Santana Extension Talks Continue
2008-02-01 17:01:00
4:11pm: According to WFAN, the Mets asked to extend the deadline two hours to 6pm CST. 4:00pm: Santana is meeting with Mets officials himself.  The deadline could probably be extended.  The length of the deal remains a key issue. 3:51pm: ESPN's Jayson Stark says Santana wants six guaranteed years, starting with the 2009 season.  The Mets might do it for a lower average annual value.  Stark says Santana's initial asking price was $28MM per year. 3:45pm: This thing is getting down to the wire. I just received some info, but this stuff is as of 2pm.  There is talk of ripping up Santana's current contract and doing five years at $24MM per starting with '08.  There could also be sixth and seventh year options.  Plus, I've heard Santana is campaigning for an opt-out after three years. 1:32pm: Jon Heyman has an update as we near the deadline.  The Mets are expected to give Santana a six-year extension worth $132MM ($22MM per) and also tack on a ...
The Twins Accepted The Best Offer For Johan Santana
2008-02-01 12:18:00
After a couple of days of commentary about the Minnesota Twins trade of Johan Santana to the New York Mets for Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra, Phil Humber and Kevin Mulvey, one can reasonably conclude that the Twins got the worst end of the deal.  Assuming the Twins had the option of either of the Red Sox deals - Jon Lester/Coco Crisp/Jed Lowrie/Justin Masteron or Jacoby Ellsbury/Jed Lowrie/Justin Masteron/4th prospect - or a Phil Hughes-led one from the Yankees, Twins' GM Bill Smith did get hosed. However, that assumption seems to be as big as the assumption one needs to make about Bill Smith's intellectual capacity to be a general manager, doesn't it?  Smith would have to be be quite challenged in the brains department to accept the Mets deal over any of the other rumored offers. What makes the first assumption (the rumored offers were offered on Tuesday) even more tenuous is the fact that recent reports have the Twins calling-up the Yankees at the last minute to see if ...
Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Johan Santana
2008-02-01 10:53:00
Unless Omar Minaya fumbles the most important contract negotiation of his career (we can't see that happening), the biggest story of the 2007-08 off-season now has an ending and the enduring national nightmare is over. Johan Santana is a Met...now we can get back to talking about more important issues like Kyle Lohse and Livan Hernandez. But before we do let's take a look at reactions to the Santana trade from the blogosphere. Aaron Gleeman is sentimental as his blog has grown up along side Santana's career. Now he is disappointed in the package the Twins received but hopeful it could still work out in the long run. Twinkie Town believes trading Santana is status-quo for the Twins as the franchise seems to be in a perpetual state of rebuilding. This seems like overreaction considering the Twins have been in the playoffs four of the past six years. Twins Territory is not disappointed in the trade outcome. They believe Bill Smith had his hands tied and four top prospects is a nice...

Fantasy Baseball Fallout For the Johan Santana Trade
2008-01-30 12:46:00
Johan Santana has finally been traded, and he was dealt for a package that first surfaced in mid-December.  That is interesting in and of itself.  Who didn't think somewhere in the back of their mind that Santana wasn't going to be dealt to a team that was never mentioned? Anyhow, this deal should have the effect of moving Johan Santana into the tail end of the 1st round in fantasy drafts.  He had fallen into the mid-second round, but a move to the NL and the idea of facing the pitcher once every nine batters should be enough to get fantasy players jumping at him around #9. The Twins received three pitchers who shouldn't have much value in 2008.  I expect Phil Humber and Kevin Mulvey to do decent imitations of back-end starters learning the ropes - an occasional good game followed by a mediocre one followed by a bomb.  Something akin to a mixture of Scott Baker's 2006 and Kevin Slowey's 2007.  Deolis Guerra isn't a consideration for 2008. The big ...
Johan Santana Traded to the Mets

Holy heffin? hey, could arguably the best pitcher in baseball just get better? Well, yeah. Talked to a friend that is a Mets fan. This was his reaction, ?We just got ourselves to the World Series. Johan Santana trade is no-brainer for Mets, but did Twins get best possible
2008-01-30 10:41:00
Any team in baseball would want Johan Santana. The New York Mets need him. Perhaps the only thing that kept the Mets out of the last two World Series was this: Their rotation lacked a durable, dominant ace. Of course, they weren’t the only club without one. Off Topic: New York Mets acquire P Johan Santana from Minnesota Twins

In other news, My New York Mets have acquired Two Time Cy Young Winner in Pitcher Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins. The Mets sent over FOUR Prospects in OF Carlos Gomez, P Philip Humber, P Kevin Mulvey, and P Deolis Guerra. The trade is contingent upon the Mets signing Santana to a contract extension, they have a 72 Hour Window in which to sign Johan! This trade was so shocking I couldn't help myself from posting this news on our Bucs Blog, surely there's another Mets-Bucs Fan among us? At any rate, I never publicly bemoaned General Manager Omar Minaya at either of my two favorite NYM's Blogs: MetsBlog.com or AmazinAvenue.com, but I was quietly beginning to question whether he (and the Wilpons) could truly deliver an Ace to the Mets Faithful. I thought Barry Zito from last off-season was the answer, maybe Omar had Johan in mind then and decided to save that 100+ Million Dollar Contract. Smart man. Can lightning strike twice for Bucs-Mets Fans? Can General Manager Bruce Al...

Just who is Johan Santana
2008-01-30 03:22:00
I've spent so much time discussing trade possibilities and packages for Johan Santana that I've neglected to profile just how special a pitcher he is. Before I get started let me just say how shocked I am that we acquired him and what a great job Omar did. I said before when I criticized Omar for his lack of urgency this off-season that if he obtained Santana I would happily admit I was wrong and sing his praises. Not only did Omar get Santana but the package is perfect, 4-1 without giving up both outfielders or major league ready pitchers.Johan Santana is a 29 y/o, left handed true ace quality starter. He is a two time AL CY Young Award winner and a three time All-Star (2005-2007). He holds a lifetime record of 93-44 with an ERA of 3.22 and a BB/SO 364/1381. His best year came in 2004 when he went 20-6 in 34 starts (228 innings) with a BB/SO of 54/254. He has made four playoff appearances in which he has compiled a record of 1-3 with an ERA of 3.97 in 11 games ( 5 starts). In mid...

Johan Santana is a Met

The NY Mets have acquired LHP Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins. The deal will include the Mets sending four prospects to the Twins, who have not been disclosed because the deal is pending contract negotiations between Santana and the Mets. It is believed that the Mets have been given a window of 48-72hours to negotiate a contract. If a contract can not be agreed upon then it is believed Santana will invoke his no trade clause. Although the names have not been disclosed it is believed the four prospects are Gomez, Humber, Mulvey and Guerra. If the deal is true and the package is accurate, this is excellent news. Update [2008-1-29 16:24:35 by Eric Hz]: Ken Rosenthal reports via USA Today that the Mets have acquired Johan Santana and now need to work out a contract extension. The deal is Carlos Gomez, Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.
