Quick Nuggets: John Beck/Matt Ryan comparison & some trade talk
2008-04-18 21:50:00 I was just reading Jeff Darlington's Q&A over on the Miami Herald's website and two of his responses peeked my attention. The first one is about Matt Ryan and where John Beck would rank if he was in this draft. The second is Jeff's view on why the Dolphins won't be able to trade the #1 pick. Q: What do you think of the Dolphins taking Joe Flacco in the second round? I love what I've seen from the kid, but I haven't heard anything about the Dolphins being interested in him (which I guess could be a good thing if they want to hide their interest). A: I'm actually not expecting the Dolphins to draft a quarterback on the first day of this year's draft. I just think this team has too many other needs. Plus, Flacco, in my opinion, doesn't come close to comparing with John Beck's potential. If Beck were in this draft, I think we'd be talking about him in the same breath as Matt Ryan. Like Jeff, I, too, am thinking that the Dolphins will not take a QB in the fi...

Thoughts on John Beck from a BYU fan's perspective
2008-03-26 22:33:00 In this diary, a reader by the screen name of "VegasPhinFan" gives us a little perspective on John Beck from his days at BYU. Interesting stuff, so I decided to move it to the front page so those who missed it can read it: Yes, I'm another one of those BYU fans/Beck supporters that has recently began following the Dolphins because of John. I just want to say a couple of things. I was probably more disappointed in his rookie season than most of you. He was a stud in college and in my opinion at that time, was better coming out of BYU than Steve Young was. Most people place the blame on the coaching, but I'm not sure if that was it. John just seemed to look like he did when he first started at BYU as a freshman. To tell you the truth, I yelled at him constantly during his first two years at BYU. He always overthrew his receivers and always rushed his decisionmaking. He settled down for his last two years and was an absolute stud...

John Beck vs Josh McCown
2008-03-05 06:03:00 What I wanted to do was to just take a look back at Josh McCown's 2007 season in Oakland. But I figured I needed to provide some kind of baseline to measure his performance. That's why John Beck's numbers are also included. So the idea here is to get to know Josh McCown a little better. Yes, we all know it's believed McCown will not be starting, per Chris Mortensen's report a few days ago that McCown was brought in to be the #2 quarterback. But we still need to get to know him, right? McCown, who will be 29 by the time the regular season rolls around, is 2 years older than Beck and has 5 more seasons under his belt than John does. As far as physical tools go, McCown has them am except for accuracy. He's got a big-time arm and can make all the throws an NFL quarterback has to. But there's a reason why he's never really put together a solid season in the NFL. And like I said, accuracy is a problem. So is his decision making. But before we get into his accuracy...

Dan Marino on John Beck...and wine
2008-01-30 04:45:00 The Sun-Sentinel's Brian Wacker had the chance to chat with the greatest pure passer who ever lived, Danny Marino. And like many, including myself, Marino also agrees that it's impossible to judge John Beck on his 2007 performance: "It was tough for him because they were struggling as a team and he had some tough road games. One thing I noticed about him is that his decision making is quick. He's real decisive in his decisions and getting rid of the ball." "But I haven't seen him up close to see things like arm strength, and we haven't seen enough him because he's only played in a few games." I noticed Beck's decision making and quick release as well this year. And though you don't want to, it's hard not to at least draw some comparison to Danny (in regards to his release, that is). It's not quite as quick as Marino's, but it's pretty darn close. Meanwhile, Marino has also announced the release of his own wine. You can learn about it (and see the ...

Video Time: John Beck!!
2008-01-12 06:38:00 Here's the final highlight of the Dolphins' 2007 season: John Beck's first career touchdown pass in the NFL. At the very least, his performance against the Bengals that last week gave him something to build on in the future. Damnit, I can't wait for training camp already!

Ricky Williams to Get the Starting Nod
2007-11-26 16:58:00 Will Ricky’s crouching tiger help the Dolphins tonight against Pittsburgh? You can stop all the speculation heading into tonights game. With Jesse Chatman hurt and Patrick Cobbs being pretty mediocre, Ricky Williams will reportedly get the starting nod for the Dolphins tonight when they take on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Considering the type of defense ...

John Beck: Pass by Pass
2007-11-23 06:39:00 Well I've finally had a chance to take a look back at last Sunday's game and watch John Beck's NFL debut for the first time since the actual game. Below are my thoughts, going pass by pass. Also, I promised earlier in the week that I'd be posting a video with all of Beck's pass attempts and that will happen soon, as it's very close to being finished. I'll post it here through YouTube, which means it'll only be up for as long as YouTube (and the NFL) allows. Onto Beck's performance: First Possession 3rd and 3: John is in the shotgun for his first pass attempt. He misses high and outside to Jesse Chatman out of the backfield in the left flat. He was well covered, but I think the Philly blitz on his first pass attempt forced him to rush the ball. It did look like Derek Hagan was open on a comeback route to the left, but like I said, Beck had to get rid of the ball. Second Possession 2nd and 16: Beck, under center, throws a quick hi...

Phin Phanatic :: 10 Commandments of John Beck?by Dave Hyde
2007-11-18 13:11:00 You can read Dave Hyde over a the Sun-Sentinel. Hyde is a Miami Dolphins beat writer. Normally, I won’t bother to copy an entire article that a journalist wrote, but instead link to alone or quote from it. This however, on the morning of John Becks’ first career NFL start, well…couldn’t pass it up. You ...
E-Mail Time: John Beck
2007-11-15 20:40:00 I got an e-mail from "James F," who happens to be a BYU fan. He's seen John play much more than most of us have. So I wanted to share what he had to tell me about John. Here's what he had to say: Expect coolness under pressure, a completed pass in the seam as he is going down backwards in a potential sack, A Scramble out of the pocket for that fourth and fifth look. A lot of action out in the flat, over the middle 12 yards out type of stuff, using the backs as receivers out of the back field and then when you least expect it, Bang....45 yards down the side line over the shoulder to Ginn Jr. for a comeback win against the Eagles. An in your face, you could have drafted me, sort of thing to Andy Reid, also a fellow Mormon. Bang, Bang, Bang, then Cam's investment pays off as the future arrives in Miami. I expect he may be a little tight out of the gate, maybe a fumble, or a pic, (hopefully not) as he is getting his game legs. But Beck is M...

Expectations for John Beck
2007-11-15 06:08:00 Since John Beck is officially the QB, it's time to get into what our expectations for him will be. It's important to note that you need to be realistic in what you expect. He's a rookie who will be playing for a team that does lack talent at the skill positions. He's also going to be starting in one of the most difficult places to play - the Linc in Philly. So everyone needs keep their expectations limited. Don't expect that simply because we finally get to see John in there, this team is going to win games. And do NOT get all pissy and start to call John a "bust" if he struggles. That's simply not fair. If he makes some bad reads and poor dicisions, it doesn't mean he's a slow learner. He simply needs time (and some more talent around him would help, too). So my advice to everyone is to be patient and simply enjoy watching the progress that John will be making from game to game. With that said, what better time to look back at the first career NFL starts of s...

Confirmed: Let the John Beck era begin!!
2007-11-14 21:28:00 Well we know have heard it straight from the horses mouth: John Beck will be starting on Sunday against the Eagles. I'm sure most of you waited to celebrate until it was official, and it now is. Cam Cameron has confirmed John will start. Cam said that "John has made tremendous progress in the last month" and that "John gives us the chance to win the football game." Cam told his final decision to both players this morning. Also, practice reps have been adjusted so that Beck is getting about 80% of the snaps rather than thr 50/50 split. When asked what will be asked of Beck, Cam said "Number one: take care of the football." He then went on to say that he will just ask John to "play the best football he can play." Cam was asked at one point about when he decided to start John. Cam replied by saying, "You just sense a guy growing. You've been there and seen it before...you sense when he's getting that command." Cam continue...

QB Change for Phins
2007-11-14 20:09:00 Coach Cam Cameron has decided to make a quarterback change for Sunday's visit to Philadelphia and give rookie John Beck his first career start in place of Cleo Lemon, said a source close to the team.Cameron notified the quarterbacks of his decision this morning. The determination to start Beck seemed to signify a change of heart since he met with his quarterbacks on Tuesday.A source said Lemon left the meeting thinking he would be making his fifth consecutive start, while Cameron made it clear that Beck should be ready for his first game action if Lemon and 0-9 Dolphins were to struggle.Lemon also left the meeting aware that Beck will become the starter at some point because the team needs to evaluate him this season.Later Tuesday, Cameron telephoned Lemon and told him he wanted to give his decision some more thought. Cameron told Lemon Wednesday Beck would handle all of the snaps with the first-team offense this week. Beck has shared snaps equally with Lemon in practice recently.B...
Wedesday Morning Updates: John Beck and Ricky Williams
2007-11-14 17:40:00 Wow! What a Wednesday, huh? I've just now been able to get to a computer to make a post about these two things, so sorry for the delay. Great job by you guys making diaries on these hot topics. Also, a big thanks to everyone who e-mailed me about either the Beck or Ricky news. I really do appreciate it! Just to recap, here's what is currently going on in Dolphinland: HERALD SAYS BECK TO START This story keeps changing way too much. First, the Palm Beach Post said Cleo Lemon would start. Then Alex Marvez of FOX Sports claimed Cam was still undecided. Now, the Miami Herald is reporting that John Beck will start on Sunday. And just now, ESPN is also reporting that Beck will be named starter today. According to ESPN's report, a "person familiar" with the conversation has told the AP that Cam sat down with both QBs and told them his decision. But at this point, don't get your hopes up too much. Let's wait until Cam...

Dolphin Nuggets: John Beck & Zach Thomas
2007-11-08 18:05:00 CLAYTON: ONLY A MATTER OF WEEKS UNTIL BECK There was a short little blurb in the blog of ESPN's John Clayton yesterday about John Beck. Here's what Clayton writes: Beck time: Another rookie who may make it on the field before Russell is John Beck of Miami. Cleo Lemon is starting, but the Dolphins second-round pick could play Sunday if Lemon struggles. Beck underwent a little bit of a mid-season slump in practices with the Dolphins but has rebounded and done much better recently. It's only a matter of weeks before Beck is given the chance to start, but he could be playing this week if Lemon gets off to a bad start. It's interesting that Clayton tells us Beck underwent "a little bit of a mid-season slump in practices." I say that because no other media outlet has reported such a thing. And considering the media is only able to watch about a half hour of practice, it makes me wonder where Clayton got this info from. Perhaps it comes from a Dolphins source wi...

John Beck, Miami Dolphins QB
2007-11-07 20:49:00 With the Miami Dolphins 0-8 and coming off their bye, there seems to be little reason not to use the time off to prepare 2nd round pick, QB John Beck, for his professional debut when the team returns to action against the Buffalo Bills in Week Ten. However, head coach Cam Cameron isn't ready to let current QB, Cleo Lemon, return to the back-up role he previously filled. In spite of that, The question remains. How well will John Beck do given the team is suits-up journeyman RBs and an under-achieving receiving core led by the venerable Marty Booker. Until he takes actual game snaps, Beck is only as good as his projections. Fortunately, the team at Pro Football Prospectus does not shy away from doing that for rookie QBs. While reviewing their information, keep in mind the team had Ronnie Brown and Chris Chambers as members of the team when the analysis was done. First from PFP's player projection:His selling points are a quick-trigger release and excell...

Source: John Beck to start following bye week
2007-10-27 16:31:00 Well it seems that we all may be getting our wish. Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports is reporting that the Dolphins are likely to start rookie John Beck on November 11 at home against Buffalo. The Dolphins have a bye following tomorrow's game in London against the Giants. Two sources, according to Cole, have said that the Beck "could be the starter" for that game. And like many fans have been saying, the major reason for Beck to start is too begin evaluating him to see of he is indeed the future franchise quarterback that the Dolphins so desperately need. Here's what one "high-ranking member of the organization" told Cole: "We need to know (about Beck) so we know if we have to take a quarterback with that pick (in next year's draft)." That's been the thought of many Dolphin fans considering the fact that the Dolphins are likely to have an opportunity, thanks to their putrid record, to draft one of the top QBs in 2008's class come April. Though I think it's unlikely the Dolp...

Some Dolphin Notes: Jason Allen, Travis Daniels, John Beck, and more
2007-10-11 03:32:00 A lot of news coming out of practice today so let's talk a little bit about some of the more important things. First, Jason Allen has been moved back to safety and will be Donovin Darius's primary backup. Meanwhile, Travis Daniels was moved back to corner after the safety experiment failed. It'll be interesting to see how involved Daniels is on the field. Will Allen and Andre Goodman are likely to be the starting corners. So that means Daniels will compete with Michael Lehan for the nickelback spot. At this point, I'm not sure who will see more action on Sunday, so we'll have to wait and see. As far as Jason Allen goes, maybe we'll get to see if he will ever amount to anything more than a poor special teams player. Hopefully, his physical ability allows him to make up for the mental lapses he's had in the past at safety. He's got all the tools to become good NFL safety. Hopefully he can put it all together. For now,...

E-mail from reader regarding John Beck
2007-09-21 01:16:00 Here's an e-mail I received from a reader named Alan. He's a big BYU football fan and wanted to shre his thoughts on John Beck and why he should start sooner rather than later. Enjoy: I read your recent blog entry and wanted to make a few comments. First, in evaluating if and when to play John Beck, one important consideration is whether Beck can handle it. What I mean by this is Beck mentally strong enough to handle being thrown to the wolves and likely performing at a sub-par level for an initial period of time. A few insights regarding Beck may be helpful in this regard. First, I've followed BYU football very closely for 15+ years. I personally watched every football game Beck played in at BYU. I also have contact with various players at BYU and their families. I've seen Beck in just about every football situation imaginable, from his freshman year with no experience to personally watching his last second touchdown against...

The Trent Green/John Beck Situation: A Voice of Reason
2007-09-19 21:24:00 It's no secret to those who read my site on a regular basis that I can't wait to see John Beck get his chance to start. The kid looks the part of something special, everything from his physical tools to the way he handles himself off the field. And already, there has been an uproar in Miami, with many fans already calling for Beck to replace Trent Green after just 2 games. If you do read this site often, then you know that I'm not in favor of starting Beck yet. I'm not saying he shouldn't start at all this year, but just not yet. My argument when I originally posted this was guys like Patrick Ramsey, Tim Couch, and David Carr. These 3 guys were clearly put in too soon, behind very shaky offensive lines, and got beat up game after game, got their confidence shaken, and became NFL afterthoughts. Others point to Peyton Manning as the poster child for starting your QB as a rookie and letting him learn. Then they also point to how ot...

Mormino signs; update on John Beck and Ted Ginn
2007-07-22 21:40:00 And then there were 2. The Dolphins have signed Drew Mormino to a 4 year deal, this according to the Sun-Sentinel. Mormino's agent has said that Drew will "most definitely" report to camp today, as it is the reporting date for rookies. However, the team's top 2 picks, Ted Ginn and John Beck, will not be there, at least not yet. Both remained unsigned, and with only 2 1st round picks signed, some Dolphin fans seem a bit worried about getting Ginn into camp quickly. But like I said in the earlier post today, they don't practice until Tuesday and the full team doesn't report until Friday. So let's give them more time before we worry. As for how negotiations asre coming along with these 2, the only piece of information comes courtesy of Armando Salguero's blog: With only a couple of days before rookies go on the field, the team is still optimistic top two picks Ted Ginn Jr and John Beck will be in uniform although they remain unsigned as of t...

Ted Ginn and John Beck - A Tale of Changed Minds
2007-07-13 20:42:00 Disclaimer: The below interview in its entirety is, obviously, fictional. Seeing as Matty I is actually vacationing this week, it'd be a bit difficult for him to answer these questions. The answers below were fabricated by myself for your entertainment and have nothing to do with Matty I or The Phinsider. I have a huge amount of respect for Matty I and his coverage on the Dolphins - he's an excellent writer and SB Nation is lucky to have him. And for the record, I think that Ginn and Beck have the potential to be good; it just needs to be pointed out that NO Dolphins fan was happy with their draft right away. None. So here we go. Oh, this is going to be fun. With Matty I taking a week's leave of absence from "Around the AFC East", I thought it would be fun to take a trip down memory lane. So strap in, Bills fans, for a return trip to April 28, 2007: Oh, that video makes me smile. Still widely considered the biggest mistake of the first round, the Ted Ginn pick was, i...

John Beck: Our Franchise QB
2007-05-02 07:03:00 Everyone wanted Miami to select Brady Quinn and let him be this team's franchise quarterback. They didn't. Everyone thought that the Dolphins missed their opportunity to get their franchise QB, the piece of the puzzle this team has missed since Dan Marino retired. They didn't. Instead, the drafted exactly who they wanted to be this team's franchise quarterback. He didn't play at an over-hyped college and didn't get overhyped himself by the media leading up to the draft. And we, as Dolphin fans, should be happy about that. GM Randy Mueller: "I would cringe whenever I turned on a TV and saw Beck being mentioned. I didn't want anyone talking about him at all. I didn't want any team to know what we thought of him and another team maybe taking him." This could explain why the Dolphins, while trading text messages with John Beck towards the mid to late 1st round, were also looking to trade up in the draft to select Beck. It's been reported that Mueller tried as many...
