A Better Story John Grisham Couldn’t Write
2008-05-09 13:24:00 Does life imitate art or does art imitate life? A recent disciplinary case against an attorney in the state of Massachusetts involves facts that could have been ripped out of a John Grisham legal thriller. An attorney hoping to get information about a judge sets up a fake job interview with the judge’s law clerk, secretly records the “job interview”, then tries to blackmail the clerk into saying bad things about the judge. The clerk — wisely — goes to the FBI who busts the attorney. In The Matter of Gary C. Crossen, 880 N.E.2d 352 (Mass.2008), reads like a legal thriller. (Here’s another link to the Crossen case in case the first doesn’t work.) The facts of the case read like any great legal novel — except in this case they are true: On July 24, Reid made reservations for “Peter O’Hara” at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston for an August 2 meeting with the law clerk. On August 1, Crossen, Curry, Donahue, Arthur T., Ru...
John Grisham Focuses on Falsely Condemned
2008-04-26 21:16:00 An obituary in The New York Times changed the way attorney-turned-best-selling author John Grisham looked at the law.On Dec. 9, 2004, he was skimming the Times and came across the headline, ?Ronald Williamson, Freed from Death Row, Dies at 51.? After reading the story, he knew it would be his next book and his first foray into nonfiction. It also was the beginning of his work with innocence projects attempting to correct flaws in America?s legal system.?There are thousands of innocent people in prison in this country,? Grisham said yesterday at University of Richmond?s T.C. Williams School of Law.?I had never really thought about wrongful conviction. I didn?t really think about it until ?The Innocent Man? was researched and written,? said the author of ?The Firm? and other legal thrillers.Grisham spoke to dozens of students and faculty associated with UR?s newly established Institute for Actual Innocence. The program, which involves students, faculty and practicing lawyers, works to...

Book Review: Playing for Pizza, by John Grisham
2008-03-15 11:19:00 Okay, this is a lame book to review in comparison to the other books I’ve been reading, but it’s the book I read, so here’s the review. Playing for Pizza is one of John Grisham’s more recent books. It’s not in the mystery/law thriller category. I think he’s probably worked into his book writing deal ...

Playing For Pizza: John Grisham
2008-02-14 21:06:00 Rick Dockery was the third-string quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. In the AFC Championship game against Denver, to the surprise and dismay of virtually everyone, Rick actually got into the game. With a 17-point lead and just minutes to go, Rick provided what was arguably the worst single performance in the history of the NFL. Overnight, he became a national laughingstock and, of course, was immediately cut by the Browns and shunned by all other teams. But all Rick knows is football, and he insists that his agent, Arnie, find a team that needs him. Against enormous odds Arnie finally locates just such a team and informs Rick that, miraculously, he can in fact now be a "starting "quarterback. Great, says Rickâ for which team? The mighty Panthers of Parma, Italy. Yes, Italians do play American football, to one degree or another, and the Parma Panthers desperately want a former NFL playerâ any former NFL playerâ at their helm. So Rick reluctantly agrees to play for ...
John Grisham Novel Hits #1
2008-02-11 13:44:00 The Appeal, apparently inspired by West Virginia's 2004 state Supreme Court race, takes the top spot on The New York Times hardcover nonfiction list.It also elicits a Janet Maslin review ("Mr. Grisham delivers his savviest book in years.")National Public Radio, meanwhile, explores Grisham's recent comments invoking the '04 race and Don Blankenship's role therein.Blankenship is also taking it on the chin in the nonfiction world. Reviewers of Coal River continue to comment on the Massey Energy chief's portrayal in this book targeting mountaintop removal mining. The Oregonian refers to Blankenship as Massey's "heavy-handed chairman," and also mentions both the recent DEP settlement and the unearthed photos showing him lounging in Monte Carlo with Chief Justice Elliott "Spike" Maynard. The Washington Post review goes much farther:The story's villain, meanwhile, seems to have arrived straight from Central Casting, Black Hat Division. Don Blankenship, Massey's CEO, comes off as the...
John Grisham, Don Blankenship and West Virginia
2008-01-30 14:49:00 There had been talk of uncanny parallels between West Virginia 2004 state Supreme Court race and The Appeal, the latest legal thriller from John Grisham.Promoting the release of his new book, the "best-selling novelist of the 1990s" ended such speculation Tuesday, on NBC's Today show. From the web site for the top-rated morning program:The story plays out with a chemical company found guilty of dumping toxic waste and liable for the deaths of scores of people in a fictional Mississippi town. The owner of the company tries to get out of paying a $41 million settlement by spending millions to help elect a justice to the Mississippi Supreme Court that will swing the appeal the other way. When (Matt) Lauer asked if such a story was far-fetched, Grisham said, ?It?s already happened.??It happened a few years ago in West Virginia. A guy owned a coal company. He got tired of getting sued. He elected his guy to the Supreme Court. It switched 5-4 back his way and he didn?t worry about getting ...
John Grisham Seeks Governor's Aid In DNA-Test Request For Man Convicted Of
2008-01-27 14:54:00 A group of prominent attorneys and legislators is asking Governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich to order DNA testing in the case of a Peoria man who served 30 years in prison for a crime they believe he didn?t commit.Led by five former U.S. attorneys, best-selling crime novelist John Grisham and the Northwestern Center on Wrongful Convictions, the list of supporters represents years of effort on the part of the accused man to secure the DNA testing that he says will clear his name.Johnnie Lee Savory was 14 when he was arrested in 1977 and later convicted of the double-murder of his friend James Robinson, 14, and Robinson?s sister, Connie Cooper, 18.At the time, DNA-testing technology was not yet available. But Savory argues that testing hair and blood samples taken at the time of the crime will not only clear his name, but identify the true culprit.Savory?s supporters concede that a governor?s mandate to test DNA may be their last and best chance to clear Savory?s name. And for Savory...

Eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping. After forty?two hours of deliberations that followed seventy?one days of trial that included 530 hours of testimony from four dozen witnesses, and after a lifetime of sitting silently as the lawyers haggled and the judge lectured and the spectators watched like hawks for telltale signs, the jury was ready. Locked away in the jury room, secluded and secure, ten of them proudly signed their names to the verdict while the other two pouted in their corners, detached and miserable in their dissension. There were hugs and smiles and no small measure of self-congratulation because they had survived this little war and could now march proudly back into the arena with a decision they had rescued through sheer determination and the dogged pursuit of compromise. Their ordeal was over; their civic duty complete. They had served above and beyond. They were ready....

That is, until he tried to broker a deal selling access to the world's most powerful satellite surveillance system to the highest bidder. When caught, Backman accepted prison as the one option that would keep him safe and alive, since the interested parties (the Israelis, the Saudis, the Russians, and the Chinese) were all itching to get their hands on his secrets at any cost. 2007-10-04 15:09:00 Seven Locks Press in Santa Ana is small-time, publishing about 25 titles a year. But it has joined big boys Doubleday and Random House, as well as author John Grisham and defense attorney Barry Scheck, as defendants in a defamation lawsuit involving the justice ? or rather the in justice ? system in the small town of Ada, Okla. The lawsuit is one of the best things that's ever happened to Seven Locks and its owner, Jim Riordan. "Quite frankly, when I get to put my name next to Grisham and Random House ? I'll take that any day," says Riordan, who I met a few years ago when he was working with Deacon Jones on a charity fundraiser. At the center of the lawsuit is an Oklahoma prosecutor by the name of William N. Peterson. He got murder convictions on two men who did 12 years in prison before they were cleared by DNA evidence. He also got questionable convictions on two other men in a separate murder case. They are still in prison. The cases spawned three books: "The Dreams of Ada" by ...
