Bands That Fame Forgot: John Vanderslice
2008-05-15 23:29:00 John Vanderslice is an American Four-Tracker. He’s declared it on an album(Life and Death of An American Four-Tracker), he’s built a retro recording studio(Tiny Telephone) based on his love of doing things simply and earnestly and he plays each show like a kid playing his newest creation for a group of close friends in his ...

John Vanderslice - Emerald City
2007-08-20 18:20:00 John Vanderslice has been quietly amassing a brilliant catalog of meticulously arranged, beautifully recorded and heart-wrenching records over the past seven years. ‘Emerald City’ is the natural culmination of his last two records, artistic narratives about the current state of affairs in the world that highlight our deep insecurities and paranoia. It?s heady subject territory, ...
John Vanderslice: Emerald City
2007-08-07 01:49:00 John Vanderslice: Emerald CityFormer mk Ultra front man, John Vanderslice releases his sixth solo record on Barsuk Records. The native Floridian has become somewhat of an existentialist. While the original existentialists questioned existence after the dropping of the atomic bombs, John Vanderslice questions existence after 9/11.The major difference is tact. John Vanderslice questions existence while constantly referencing 9/11 and the post-9/11 political climate. It is sufficient to say, he's a real downer.Six years after the attack on the World Trade Center, John Vanderslice is the only person still writing 9/11 songs. Some bands have taken it upon themselves to still write political songs which is fine, but writing about 9/11 six years after the fact is a bit obsessive.Emerald City isn't a terrible album though. Musically, Vanderslice does some great things with his "dirty lo-fi" style. From the opening acoustic track "Kookaburra" to the lo-fi jaunt "Time to Go", he does g...

John Vanderslice - Emerald City
2007-07-08 16:31:00 A fan of Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Kinks, and Southern rock when he was a child, taking the power of his songwriting from David Bowie, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, King Crimson, XTC, and early Genesis, John Vanderslice has released five studio records by now. New record Emerald City (out July 24) is a lovely album while resting on seaside (believe me i tried this). Moreover it's a great choice for a sunny, beautiful Sunday. He is developing well-educated pop sound, and i recommend his Cellar Door record. If Cellar Door (2004) is ok for you, then you should listen to the other records of him. Musically, the songs from Emerald City are clean, nice and easy to get. They are fueled by an era of deep insecurity and paranoia; they develop in front of a backdrop of ritualized and mythologized current events. Lyrically, John Vanderslice's characters and storytellers track Manifest Destiny from burning wagon wheels to two-bedroom homes with full amenities in Bakersfield, C...

John Vanderslice - White Dove
2007-07-01 21:12:00 John Vanderslice, hailing from San Fran, his new album Emerald City drops in a few weeks. This album is filled with tons of emotion, which makes this an amazing find. John wrote the album while his girlfriend (a Frenchie) was trying to immigrate, and was subsequently caught up in legal limbo. John Vanderslice is also about to emark on tour, which will surly make things hard on him and his girlfriend (who is still in the process of naturalizing). Anyways the album is gonna rock, so go see his shows! Buy This Album Download John VandersliceBookmark to:

John Vanderslice - Life And Death Of An American Fourtracker [2002]
2007-06-22 07:23:00 Amazon.com Take one engineer-singer-songwriter of vision, depth, and appeal, grappling with the great ontological and epistemological questions of post-modernism and the Enlightenment. Add Sloppy Hi-FiT, rhythm, melody, diverse instrumentation, a compelling storyline, and extra lyrics from cult punk-folk hero John Darnielle (Mountain Goats, Extra Glenns). ...
John Vanderslice - Exodus Damage
2007-03-01 11:11:00 John Valderslice (ex of pioneer rockers MK Ultra) is the mp3 blogger’s dream ticket. Not only was he responsible for one of the first of the species, Tiny Telephone, but his progressive attitude to music distribution is a template that aspiring musicians (and the industry as a whole) would do well to study. And to cap it all off Mr. Valderslice makes some mighty fine music. He released 5 albums

John Vanderslice - Emerald City
