Worth Watching - Feb 3: John Woo's Red Cliff Teaser Trailer - SendMeRSS
2008-02-05 09:27:00 Worth Watching - Feb 3: John Woo's Red Cliff Teaser Trailer A very early Chinese language teaser trailer for John Woo's Red Cliff has arrived online. The film is an epic look at the legendary Battle of Red Cliff, in which a force of fifty thousand defeated an army of nearly one million at the end of the Han Dynasty. Let me be the first to say - John Woo is a hack director. Maybe back when he started in the 70's and 80's he was a great action director, but throughout the 90's and especially recently, he's made nothing but utter crap. That said, this doesn't look as bad as say, Paycheck, but who really knows yet? One thing is for sure, I'm getting tired of sprawling epic ancient history fighting movies. Leave that to Peter Jackson! Need I remind you that this film has had a lot of troubles, including an incident with Chow Yun-Fat dropping out at the last minute due to "unrealistic demands". And sorry about the crappy quality, but at least that's how we know it's a John Woo m...

Sunday Discussion: What Do YOU Think of John Woo? - SendMeRSS
2008-02-05 09:27:00 Sunday Discussion: What Do YOU Think of John Woo? Earlier this morning we posted a teaser trailer for John Woo's upcoming Chinese epic Red Cliff. In the article I made mention of the fact that I personally believe that John Woo is a hack director, saying that "he's made nothing but utter crap" since the 90's. Since then some people have called me out claiming my statement is incredibly harsh and wrong and that calling Woo a hack in lieu of other crappy directors is just ridiculous. I stand to hold my own opinion, and I don't think I'm alone, but I've been called out before (Hancock trailer anyone?), so this time I must ask - what do YOU think of John Woo? My extreme dislike for Woo originally developed after Paycheck, his most recent feature film. That came out in 2003 and now 5 years later he still hasn't made a feature film, how coincidental, especially considering that Paycheck was a giant piece of crap that failed at the box office (it only made $53.8 million total on a $...

John Woo Faces Increasing Problems with ?Red Cliff?; Drops A
2006-12-11 21:10:02 Director John Woo says his new film depicting an ancient Chinese battle has been frustrated by his inability to shoot at China’s largest river, the Yangtze, having instead to rely on special effects to create a similar backdrop. Woo’s upcoming movie, “Battle of Red Cliff“, is based on a war of the same name in 208 A.D. that determined the geography of the Three Kingdoms period, when China had three separate rulers. He also recently announced that Andy Lau would not star in the film because of the star’s compact schedule but that Andy is an excellent actor who he hopes to cooperate with next time. The Hollywood director confirmed that the five leading roles would go to Chow Yun-Fat, Cannes best actor winner Tony Leung, Chang Chen and Taiwan supermodel Lin Chi-Ling. Taiwan actor Collin Chou will replace Andy Lau to play the famous general Zhao Zilong. “Battle of Red Cliff'’ marks Hong Kong native Woo’s return to Chinese-language cinem...
