Drugs: A Rising Problem in MMA?
2007-07-20 04:02:00
These days, drugs almost seem to be a part of a mixed martial artist's everyday diet. Recently we've had an influx of fighters testing positive for some form of substance. Fighters which include UFC hall of famer Royce Gracie, Nick Diaz, Stephan Bonnar, Thiago Alves, Johnnie Morton, and more recently UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk and his most recent challenger Hermes Franca. Unfortunately, drug abuse is becoming a major problem in MMA today. The California State Athletic Commission recently released drug testing results. As many as twenty-eight fighters licensed by CSAC have violated the state's anti-doping policy from March 31 through July 6 of 2007. What's more sad is that a whopping 71 percent are from mixed martial arts alone. Shocking to say the least, considering that MMA has 14 fewer cards than boxing and kickboxing combined. The list released by CSAC does not specificy the type of failure to fighters of any discpline, however there were 28 violations reported, 9 of w...

Johnnie Morton Tests Positive for Steroids
2007-06-14 18:30:00
With the recent string of fighters testing positive for a large variety of drugs, it came as no surprise to me when I heard news of Johnnie Morton testing positive for anabolic steroids, according to the California State Athletic Commission. Johnnie Morton made his MMA debut on June 2 at K-1?s Dynamite!! USA event and was brutally knocked out by opponent, Bernard Ackah, in just 38 seconds of the first round. Morton underwent a pre-fight urinalysis and results came back positive with a "very elevated T/E ratio,? in layman terms, very high testosterone. His T/E ratio was 83.9, opposed to 6, the normal industry standard for an athlete. The former NFL wide receiver refused to take a post-fight drug test and placed on indefinite suspension and as a result has had his purse withheld. CSAC Executive Director Armando Garcia has given Morton ten days to explain his reasons for refusing to take the post-fight test. Morton faces a possible revocation of his fighting license and a maximum fin...

2007-03-29 00:29:00
The American is an ex-American football player Royce Gracie’s next adversary is already known. He is one Johnnie Morton, ex-professional American football player, and next June 2nd, against the Brazilian legend, he will make his MMA debut. Coincidence or not, Dynamite USA, as the event is being called, will be the first in the United States to take place in a football stadium, in this case, the L.A. Coliseum. Another fight confirmed for Hero’s is between Brock Lesnar, American pro-wrestling hero, and the South Korean giant Choi Hong Man. Stay tuned and shortly GRACIEMAG.com will bring more information about the first K-1 Hero’s event to take place in the United States.Source: GracieMag.com
Johnnie Morton Turns to Mixed Martial Arts
2007-03-24 22:44:00
Posted Mar 24th 2007 6:55AM by Michael David SmithFiled under: 49ers, Chiefs, Lions, NFL Gossip, NFL Rumors, Detroit, FightingFormer Lions, Chiefs and 49ers receiver Johnnie Morton has left football, and now he's giving mixed martial arts a try. My favorite part of the announcement, as reported by Larry Brown Sports, is what they're calling the event. This is how the press release starts:FEG (Fighting Entertainment Group), ProElite and Showtime will announce "Softbank presents DYNAMITE!! USA in association with ProElite,"Do the organizers of this event really think someone is going to call his buddy and say, "Hey, want to get together and go see Softbank presents DYNAMITE!! USA in association with ProElite?" And what's with the two exclamation points after DYNAMITE? Did they really think putting it in all caps and following it up with one exclamation point wasn't quite enough, and that they needed to add that one last exclamation point to make the difference?Anyway, I would like...
