Friday Five: John Henry
2011-04-22 16:32:00
According to myth and folklore, some 170 years ago, a hero was born with a hammer in his hand. John Henry was a mountain of a man who developed a specialty of driving railroad steel. When the railroad owner had the foreman bring a steam-powered hammer to do the work, John Henry challenged the owner ...

Marky's 'Run On' samples Johnny Cash and leads new downloads
2010-04-30 03:45:00
Marky "Run On" Producer: MadMan - FULL, CDQ, Track off upcoming project, Journey to Markyland, USA: Rest Stop 2 *Tibs Fav.â„¢ The DMV's Marky comes through with a super fresh, creative track that samples the legendary Johnny Cash. It's called "Run On" and the instant, cinematic feel created by producer MadMan puts this track on another level. The bangin' instrumentation of the verses contrast with the mellow sound of Johnny Cash for a dope mix that alone warrants repeat listening. But Marky does his thing too matching the deep track with a piercing flow that gets better in the second verse and beyond. I like the little bridge of his as well and just wish the ending didn't end...

Rosanne Cash with Bruce Springsteen ? ?Sea of Heartbreak?
2009-09-22 16:12:00
When Rosanne Cash turned eighteen, her father gave her a list of what he considered the 100 essential country songs. By way of an eleventh studio album, she recorded a dozen of them with a loose, jazzy backing band and an array of guests including Jeff Tweedy, Elvis Costello, and Bruce Springsteen. Without that backstory, The ...

Southern Gothic, Dark Americana: An Exploration
2008-11-10 01:42:00
A mix of gothic inner-city Americana and sharp-tongued songwriting in a triumph of mood best describes this latest sub-genre of roots music, merging carefully crafted folk harmonies, country balladry, r&b, and gritty Southern rock. Raucous yet thoughtful, this forward-thinking Americana balances attitude, energy, and back porch songcraft at its finest. These are the most serious ...

City Boy, Country Man

?So, how was your trip?? I?ve been hearing that a lot since I returned from my business trip to Nashville, Tennessee. I?d like to think that my co-workers missed my company and were glad to see me back; but, judging from the amount of work on my desk, and from the deluge of telephone calls for administrative support I?ve answered, it appears that I was missed for other reasons. My trip went well, but it was no vacation, and it is great to be home. Of course, no business trip would be complete without some sight seeing. The hotel and convention center where we stayed is less than one half mile from The Grand Ole Opry. The original site for the Opry was Ryman Auditorium, also located in Nashville. Sometime in the 1970?s the Opry moved to its current location and the show is as popular as ever. My point here is not to talk about the history of the radio program, or the many legendary performers who graced the stages of both the present day Opry House or the Ryman Auditorium. I?d like t...

Songs About Prisoners Waitin? Around To Die
2008-03-06 15:18:00
Country Music is concerned with topics like life and death, sin and salvation, and the experience of the outsider and the lower classes. It should come as no surprise then that many fine country songs feature prisoners waiting to die. Here are 10 of the finest. 10. “They?re Hanging Me Tonight” - Johnny ...
Hilarious Performance of Jackson

Vince Vaughn: Honky Tonk Man

I knew there was a reason I liked Vince Vaughn, aside from his fast-talking, used-car salesmanesque humor and wit. This is how I'm doing the random song of the day: I fire up my Media Center (the one from Jriver not Microsoft), place it on "random," and press "play." First one up goes on the blog. Here it is and it's a good one: Hey Porter by Johnny Cash. Johnny Cash is the second best country singer in modern history behind Hank Williams Sr. His early songs are the best ones, as is usually the case with any popular music artist. Short Takes - Led Zeppelin, Herbie Hancock, Barry Gordy
2008-01-12 08:27:00
John Paul Jones has told Rolling Stone that he, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page will be meeting later this month to consider further Led Zeppelin reunion shows."There is a band meeting in January. It could be fun to do more stuff."The Johnny Cash tribute concert set for San Quentin this Sunday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his appearance has been canceled. The prison blamed it on problems with filming rights, media access and security.According to Variety, Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell have discussed a tour together. Nothing is set in stone. In addition, if Hancock wins the Grammy next month for Album of the year, it will be the first time since 1958 and Henry Mancini that an album has won that was not supported by a full tour.Barry Gordy will receive the Grammy President's Merit Award at an event right after the awards ceremony on February 10. Country Singer/Songwriters Are Hot Investments
2008-01-07 17:34:00
When someone starts talking about IPOs and investing my eyes gloss over, but if you have some money to blow, I mean invest, then country music is apparently a hot commodity. And by “some money,” I mean a minimum of $500,000. Country singer/songwriters are the single hottest investment property you can find in 2008. A new ...
Musical Review: Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash
2008-01-06 09:03:00
What happens when you give the gritty and rustic lyrics of Johnny Cash to highly trained, technically proficient, powerful Broadway vocalists? The result is sometimes stunning and other times disastrous, but always interesting. After a one-month Broadway run, Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash, is now on a cross-country tour in an ...

Vagina Monologues
2007-12-02 23:57:00
"A friend of Johnny Cash claims that "Ring of Fire" is a euphemism for June Carter's vagina." New York mag 10/29-07 I fell into a burning ring of ire when my musician friends didn't believe me when I told them the above. I'd come across a similar assertion months ago while doing research on Johnny Cash after his Tennessee house mysteriously burned down. Bee Gees Barry Gibb had bought the home that Johnny and June Carter Cash had shared all their married life. The ghosts of Johnny and June obviously didn't want Barry barging in and renovating it.June Carter is credited with co-writing the 1963 "Ring Of Fire" lyric with Merle Kilgore. After the pair began their adulterous affair Johnny reportedly gave the impecunious June credit for song writing to throw a few bucks her way. I ask you, do you really think a chick wrote Johnny's most famous song? "I fell into a burning ring of fire. I went down, down, down, and the flames went higher. And it burns, burns, burns. The ring of fire."...

‘Hello, my name is Johnny Cash’, was his standard, even trademark opening to a concert. And true to form that is the first thing you hear on the fabulous DVD. Yes I did say fabulous! I thought the 1976 Christmas Special was a little over stage managed, but this one is just great! Filmed at ...

DVD Review: The Johnny Cash Christmas Special 1976
2007-11-30 14:05:00
I love Johnny Cash, there is always a rough and ready feel to him, he exudes a dark side. So this DVD came as a complete surprise, a softer, kinder Johnny. It was a made for TV special and filmed in and around his family farm in Bon Aqua, Tennessee. The scenery is spectacular, with ...

Book Review: Historic Photos of the Opry: Ryman Auditorium 1974

?The Opry left [the Ryman] in 1974 for the suburbs but music fans kept coming to commune with the ghosts. Wednesday Top 10
2007-11-07 20:39:00
By Cameron ClarkJohnny Cash has always been an intriguing figure to me. The film version of his life, Walk The Line, doesn't even come remotely close to capturing the aspect of this man with which I truly empathize, and that's his life-long feeling of being unforgivable.I'm not going to launch into A Cash Biography right here, but I hope to shed some light on what portions of his life, of which I am aware, that shine through in the songs that speak to me in a powerful way. These songs are my Top 10 Johnny Cash songs that will make the non-Cash fan into someone who can't stop listening to The Man in Black for his tunes, and for the man who sings them.10. Folsom Prison Blues- Johnny wrote this song in Hamburg, Germany while he was in the Air Force. After viewing a movie one Saturday night, which featured Folsom Prison, he wrote this song. The tempo is upbeat and fun, but the lyrics convey a powerful portion of his psyche. This was a free man empathizing with the imprisoned, the guil...
