Join The GENERAL HOSPITAL B.A.N.D.!
2012-02-03 17:48:00
Thanks to falling ratings, a decimated soap line-up and the looming threat that is Katie Couric, it’s no secret that GENERAL HOSPITAL — the lone remaining daytime drama on ABC’s once-powerful line-up — is in danger. Fans already mourning last year’s loss of ONE LIFE TO LIVE and ALL MY CHILDREN are praying for a miracle… and they’re getting help from several sources.  “The show just hired Ron Carlivati, who was widely praised for his amazing work on OLTL over the past few years, to take over GH,” says Soaps In Depth executive editor Richard M. Simms. “And Frank Valentini, who was the executive producer at LIFE, has come over as well. So there’s a whole new, exciting, creative and — perhaps most important all — hopeful vibe where the show is concerned.” But hope ain’t gonna boost the ratings, as has been proven time and again. “This is a really tough time to be a soap fan,” admits Simms. “It’s just shocking how many shows have been taken away. Si...
Grief Could Join List of Disorders
2012-02-03 12:37:00
In a bitter skirmish over the definition of depression, a new report contends that a proposed change to the diagnosis would characterize grieving as a disorder and greatly increase the number of people treated for it. The criteria for depression are being reviewed by the American Psychiatric Association, which is finishing work on the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or D.S.M., the first since 1994. The manual is the standard reference for the field, shaping treatment and insurance decisions, and its revisions will affect the lives of millions of people for years to come. In coming months, as the manual is finalized, outside experts will intensify scrutiny of its finer points, many of which are deeply contentious in the field. A controversy erupted last week over the proposed tightening of the definition of autism, possibly sharply reducing the number of people who receive the diagnosis. Psychiatrists say current efforts to revise the ...

Join Our Censorship Protest!
2012-01-18 02:25:00
Have you been paying attention to all the hubbub online about the proposed U.S. legislation (SOPA/PIPA) that threatens internet freedom? I wrote about it last week over on WordPress.org, but the gist is this: there’s a bill in the U.S. Senate that if passed would put publishing freedom severely at risk, and could shut down entire sites at the whim of media companies. Fight for the Future created this nifty video to sum it up better than I can. On January 18, 2012, sites all over the internet will be blacking out to protest and try to mobilize more people to speak out against this bill coming up in the Senate next week — S. 968: the Protect IP Act (PIPA) — in an attempt to let U.S. lawmakers know how much opposition there is. WordPress.org, Wikipedia, and even WordPress.com VIP I Can Has Cheezburger? will be participating in the blackout to raise awareness and spur you to action. Here on WordPress.com, we want to participate as well. Freshly Pressed will be bl...

Join The Fight Against Phishing
2011-12-26 09:00:00
The Internet is a wonderful thing. When I was a kid my dad use to tell me that anything I wanted to know can be found in a book. While this still holds true, I find that anything I want to know can be found quicker on the Internet.Even though the Internet is a great resource for improving one's knowledge about pretty much everything, it can also be a dangerous place for those that are not very computer savvy. Hell, even really savvy computer people can sometimes fall victim to cyber crime. One of the biggest, and easiest methods of cyber crime is Phishing. For those of you living under a rock, according to Wikipedia:Phishing is a way of attempting to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT administrators are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting public. Phishing is typi...

Are You Tired of Twitter Spoiling Television? Will You Join in Our Crusade?
2011-12-06 00:15:00
The TV Addict has had it up to here with Twitter spoilers! For the second consecutive week in a row, an inconsiderate Twitterer (Tweeter?) has needlessly spoiled a piece of entertainment that we hadn’t yet gotten around to watching. Which naturally got us thinking: Wouldn’t it be nice if there was some sort of agreed upon Twitter etiquette (or “Twitterquette”) when it came to TV spoilers? You know, a universal unspoken gentleman’s agreement between TV Twitterati as to how one might wish to conduct themselves as a courtesy to others. We sure as heck think so. Which is why we took a few moments to scribble down four friendly guidelines that if followed, would go a long way into helping contribute to making Twitter a better place for all involved. See for yourself, after the jump. Guideline #1: As a TV Addict who loves nothing more then to encourage folks to watch television live in a last ditch effort to support the Networks’ prehistoric business m...

Frank to Join Weiner
2011-11-30 22:46:00
Brian Tashman, Right Wing Watch: On Monday, Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank announced that he will not seek reelection next year, and American Family Association spokesman Bryan Fischer decided to celebrate Frank’s retirement by attacking the congressman for being gay. On Focal Point yesterday, Fischer claimed that Frank may have used his prominent position to “influence” other men into becoming gay who may have later contracted AIDS. “This is a dangerous, risky, immoral, unhealthy lifestyle, and Barney Frank has been an open practitioner of a lifestyle that is condemning one young man after another to an early grave,” Fischer said, “this is not somebody to admire, this is not somebody to honor.” Fischer went on to say that Frank “modeled a lifestyle which is really a death-style,” wondering, “Who knows how many people were drawn or encouraged in some way by Barney Frank’s example to dabble in a lifestyle that eventually cost them their health and maybe ...

There Are 500 Mn Indians Who Are Yet To Join The Mobile Revolution. How Lon
2011-11-11 11:35:00
The Indian mobile phone market is unique. We have so many people! Even if the actual phone users form a tiny fraction of this population, the number is still huge. We have earlier blogged about how more and more people are using mobile phones in India making it a strategic and exciting market to tap for any mobile phone manufacturer and network operator. Obviously, the market will continue to grow as more and more people get mobile phones over the years. Still, it seems we have a long way to go. According to TRAI statistics, there are roughly 500 million people who are still to adopt mobile phone technology. There are a total of 865 million mobile subscribers out of which 295.17 million people are rural subscribers. The rural population of our country is close to 700 million people. That leaves around 500 million unconnected. Almost half a billion people! That is quite a number. This represents a huge challenge to the Government as they have plans to for inclusive growth for the co...

Intel And Google Join Hands For Atom Android Partnership
2011-09-14 11:39:00
Yesterday, Intel, the largest semiconductor chip manufacturer, joined hands with Google to develop and promote new Intel Atom chips powering Android smartphones. This development partnership marks Intel’s entry into the booming smartphone market. The partnership entails both companies to work on optimizing future versions of the Android Operating System to work on Intel’s x-86 based Atom processor. This move can be seen as an attempt to wrestle the market share from the ARM dominated mobile industry.  Intel executives, at the company’s annual developer conference in San Francisco, said that the first phones featuring these chips would be launched in the first half of 2012. Intel realized that developing new chips for its internal Meego operating system would not bear fruit as Meego has a tiny market share compared to Android. Google has already announced its plan to acquire Motorola Mobility. So, you could expect to see new Motorola phones powered by Intel Atom r...

Jason Becker: join the group that matters!
2011-09-07 00:40:00
Hello all! Happy to see this page is receiving a warm start! =) First of all, allow me to introduce myself... My name is Bronson Buskett, and like most of you, I am merely a passionate musician/guitarist and avid Jason fan. After being a part of the production for the upcoming Jason film, and attending his most recent birthday party, I was asked by someone close to the Becker family to render a resource page for the man himself. (fanboy moment!) Through most recent events, many that are close with Jason have seen just how many individuals have been touched by his story on a global scale, and are willing to reach out to him. This is more than a blessing for somebody who demands constant assistance, medical support, and financial alleviation. Only one problem arises... Jason is much too humble and modest to ask his fans for help!!! That is this page's function; to serve as a communal collaboration for a very special guy. (The 'page description' elaborates more on this if you have n...

Amazon To Join The Tablet Wars?
2011-07-15 04:34:00
The tablet wars are getting fiercer with each passing day. And the latest to join the bandwagon is none other than Amazon, the world’s largest internet retailer. According to a report by the WSJ, Amazon is rolling out its tablet by October this year.
