Angels Sign Jorge Cantu To Minor League Deal
2012-01-07 03:11:00
The Angels have signed Jorge Cantu to a minor league contract, reports Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times (Twitter link).  Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported earlier today that the two sides were close to an agreement. Cantu, who turns 30 on January 30, posted a .194/.232/.285 slash line in 155 plate appearances for the Padres last season before being released and finishing the year with the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs.  Cantu has played mostly first and third base in his Major League career and is still capable of playing second on a limited basis.  Cantu isn't far removed from a very productive stint with the Marlins (a .283/.336/.462 line and 45 homers in 2008-09) and gives the Angels a more powerful option at third than incumbent Alberto Callaspo.  Cantu could also provide backup for Albert Pujols at first, given that Mark Trumbo is still recovering from a stress fracture in his foot and Kendrys Morales' health is a question mark after missi...
Angels, Jorge Cantu Nearing Deal
2012-01-06 23:19:00
The Angels are nearing a deal with free agent infielder Jorge Cantu, tweets Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Wasserman Media Group represents the 29-year-old. Cantu hit 28 homers in 2005 and 29 homers in 2008, but has struggled to produce at the plate since then. Cantu signed with the Padres for $850K about a year ago, but they designated him for assignment and the Rockies picked him up. He posted a .194/.232/.285 line in 155 plate appearances for San Diego, appearing at first, second and third base. Cantu, a right-handed hitter, has hit lefties and righties at a nearly identical clip over the course of his eight-year career.

Report: Jorge Cantu to Sign With Marlins
2008-01-04 19:21:00
It appears the Marlins are set on stockpiling 3B talent to replace Miguel Cabrera’s power. The Marlins inked Jose Castillo to a contract in December and now have inked Jorge Cantu to a deal as well to compete for the starting gig. MLB is reporting… MLB.com has learned from a Major League Baseball Players ...
Dontrelle For Josh Hamilton Was Discussed
2007-12-07 18:27:00
MLB.com's Joe Frisaro posted a new column last night full of good Marlins hot stove chatter. The most interesting note is that the Marlins talked to the Reds about swapping Dontrelle Willis for Josh Hamilton, prior to the blockbuster with Detroit.  With Miguel Cabrera, the White Sox and Rangers were involved during the Meetings before the Tigers jumped in.  The Rangers backed out when they couldn't get an extension window for Cabrera.  The Tigers wanted the same but obviously it wasn't the dealbreaker.  The Angels, Dodgers, and Giants were involved before the Meetings, with the Giants offering Noah Lowry. Frisaro says there are "strong indications the Marlins will sign Jorge Cantu.  He'll be in the mix at third base. The Fish are offering the Phils Scott Nestor for Wes Helms, who'd also compete at the hot corner. The Mets have some interest in Alfredo Amezaga, though the Marlins are inclined to keep him. Miguel Olivo will be released soon, so thro...
Odds and Ends: Guillen, Crede, Hamilton, Boone
2007-12-05 21:06:00
Rounding up some of the day's random rumors and tidbits... Jose Guillen might get a light suspension for his exploits. There was a report that the Brewers were close to obtaining Joe Crede, but it was published last night. The BBWAA approved a new resolution for 2013.  Any player with a contract provision linked to a major award of theirs will not be considered for that award.  Makes sense - to repeat Curt Schilling's situation.  Curt Schilling could get a million bucks by netting one Cy Young vote in 2008.  The BBWAA would rather preserve its right to have members make off-the-wall votes on occasion without bribery being accused. The Reds traded Buck Coats to the Jays.  They also released Jorge Cantu.  They now have an open spot on the 40-man roster. Could the Rays re-acquire Josh Hamilton?  There's speculation on the topic in Nashville. Buster Olney says Aaron Boone interests the Giants, Nationals, and Brewers. showad();
Jorge Cantu?s sacrifice fly in 11th inning helps Reds beat Giants 9-8 (AP)
2007-09-22 09:14:00
Brandon Phillips’ heads-up baserunning helped the Cincinnati Reds beat the San Franicsco Giants 9-8 in 11 innings on Friday night. Jorge Cantu’s sacrifice fly against Scott Munter (1-1) scored Phillips, who went first to third on a sacrifice bunt, to give the Reds the come-from-behind victory. Marcus McBeth (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings for the ...
You Know Your Team is Bad...
2007-09-01 06:25:00
...When one of its players gets traded to a team that's 11 games under .500 and starts raving about his new team's commitment to winning. Let's see what ex-Ray Jorge Cantu has to say about those never-say-die Cincinnati Reds:Jorge Cantu doesn't play every day and he doesn't care. It is not that he doesn't want to play every day, but he is happy to be wearing red instead of green and he'll take whatever playing time manager Pete Mackanin tosses his way. "I haven't been in this (part-time) role, but I like it," said Cantu. "You know why I like it? Because I love the way this team plays. We give everything we've got every day. I'm just glad to be part of a team that really wants to win."Memo to Devil Rays fans: your team is really, really bad. But I suspect that you knew that already.
Reds Acquire Jorge Cantu
2007-07-29 03:10:00
In a minor move, the Reds acquired infielder Jorge Cantu today along with outfielder Shaun Cumberland.  They shipped pitchers Calvin Medlock and Brian Shackelford to the Devil Rays in the deal. The Reds are doing the right thing by sending the 24 year-old Cantu to Triple A to re-establish himself.  Yes, he once drove in 117 runs and blah blah blah.  The power potential is nice; he now needs to keep his head down, maybe learn a little plate discipline, and hit his way into the Reds' lineup.  There's no infield spot for him, unless Wayne Krivsky foolishly trades Edwin Encarnacion or just starts Cantu over EE. Cumberland is a legitimate prospect, though the 23 year-old didn't step up to the challenge of Double A.  He's got the tools to succeed, and he was never going to crack the Devil Rays' outfield.  There's some upside here even if the numbers don't show it. I don't know much about Medlock but the reliever posted sick numbers in his second crack...
Cantu On His Way Out Of Tampa Bay?
2007-07-20 20:48:00
Jorge Cantu seems to want out of Tampa Bay; he's dissatisfied with his lack of playing time this year.  He was recently designated for assigment to Durham again.  Most likely, the only reason he's still in the organization is that Andrew Friedman couldn't get anything useful for him via trade.  117 RBIs just don't have the pull they did in the past. But even if he doesn't really have a position and doesn't draw walks, there should be at least a little interest in a 25 year-old with good power.  Cantu slugged .497 with 28 HR in 2005; he still owns those skills somewhere.  He's never actually had a full season at the Triple A level.  Maybe it's time to take a step back before his development moves forward. I think almost any team would be well served to buy low on Cantu, figure out one position he can play tolerably, and get him back on track.

Weekend bits and bites to carry you over for the upcoming week ahead, and make up for the really small lame post done last week. Thanks for stopping by, keep reading!!!I wonder if Bob Elliott still thinks the Jays are idiots by not offering Jeff Suppan over 40 million dollars? In just weeks after Elliott ridiculously wrote that the Jays were fools by not aggresively pursuing Suppan, it appears as if the Brewers mediocre 4th starter has regressed back to his normal state. This is surely shocking to Elliott.Baseball Central is outsourcing some content. We've participated in the first ever Blue Jay blogging roundtable at Jays Nest (which will be a weekly feature there), and we're going to have a weekly prospect report up on Flying Up the Farm coming soon.Larry Bigbie, now playing for the Braves organization, is currently doing pretty well in Richmond. He's looking for one more shot. He should get it. Seriously. He has more rings than A-Rod!Another Drunk-O-Vision article has been pro...
Jorge Cantu

ESPN.com - INSIDER - Rob Neyer Blog: "What really got Cantu was ill health and poor defense, and I won't be surprised if he returns to the majors at some point as a healthy first baseman with a decent future."Cantu is 25 years-old and fell victim to whatever mismanagement is occurring in Tampa Bay. Don't forget about him.

Jorge Cantu: No Guarantee of Regular Playing Time
2007-03-27 16:47:00
Jorge Cantu: Cantu is losing playing time at second base for the Devil Rays to B.J. Upton this spring, and Cantu might make the Opening Day roster as a part-time player rather than a regular, the St. Petersburg Times reports. Visit RotoWire.com for more analysis on this update.
