Yankees C Jorge Posada comes off disabled list (AP)
2008-06-04 23:41:00 Jorge Posada was activated from the disabled list Wednesday by the New York Yankees and was available off the bench against Toronto. The All-Star catcher wasn’t in the starting lineup because he caught the previous two days while rehabilitating his throwing shoulder at extended spring training in Florida. Read the full story.

Injury Updates On Derek Jeter & Jorge Posada Plus A Scary MLB Developme
2008-04-09 21:41:00 In what can only be interpretted as an East Coast bias for the New York Yankees, the Powers That Be at Baseball Prospectus have made the first two players covered under Will Carroll's Under The knife column available to non-subscribers. Those players names? Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada. Click though for Mr. Carroll's full report on each player, and updates on a couple/few handfuls of others for us BP subscribers. He offers a couple of things to look for when Jeter returns, assuming there is no DL stint coming, and cautions those willing to throw GM Biran Cashman under the bus for signing the old catcher for four seasons. I'm not convinced Cashman is scott-free for the $52MM four-year signing, but the Yankees do have an opening in 2009 for a 1B. Posada could get that spot if his shoulder does nto recover enough to allow him to be an effective player in deterring the SB. FWIW, I think the SB is coming back thanks to the diligent work of numbers-crunchers ev...

New York Yankees: Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada
2008-04-09 12:36:00 Derek Jeter is going to miss the next two games in the hope he will be able to return for this weekend's first of six series against the Boston Red Sox. Until that occurs, Wilson Betemit will grab all the ABs at SS. How can I say that? Easily, the Yankees, like most teams in the majors now, carry twelve pitchers. As a result, the Yanks have just four bench hitters. One of those must be a catcher. That leaves just three hitters to back-up the outfield, corners and middle infield positions. Shelly Duncan fills the back-up OF role. Morgan Ensberg gets the corner one, and Betemit has the middle infield all to himself. This means for the very short-term, Betemit is a 20 HR SS. If you have to do it, then start Betemit until Jeter returns or goes on the DL. If Jeter hits the DL, expect the Yankees to recall a middle infielder. Catcher Jorge Posada allowed four stolen bases against the KC Royals yesterday and was removed in the 7...

Jorge Posada pulled from New York Yankees? lineup with stiff right shoulder
2008-04-03 01:44:00 Jorge Posada was pulled from the New York Yankees’ lineup Wednesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays because of a stiff right shoulder. The All-Star catcher thought he tweaked his shoulder on a throw to second base Tuesday night during New York’s season opener, manager Joe Girardi said. Posada was in the original starting lineup ...

Yankees Sign Posada - 4 Years, $52.4MM
2007-11-13 04:56:00 Mark Feinsand has the scoop: the Yankees beat the buzzer and signed Jorge Posada to a four-year, $52MM contract. Omar Minaya was ready to pounce, but Brian Cashman got it done. Posada jumps above Ivan Rodriguez as the game's highest-paid catcher. The Yankees probably could've signed Posada for three years, $30MM back in February. His huge season cost them big-time, though it's still slightly less than I expected. Feinsand also says re-signing Mariano Rivera is something that should happen this week. showad();

Rivera, Posada, Lowell To Hit Open Market?
2007-11-13 04:25:00 Brian Cashman was unable to reach an agreement with either of his big-name free agents tonight. Both Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada will hit the open market despite receiving improved offers from the Yankees. Rivera hinted that he could follow Joe Torre to the Dodgers. That seems an unlikely way for the Dodgers to spend $40MM+. Honestly I thought the Yankees would extend themselves to get both deals done by midnight tonight. I'm surprised to see this pair hit the open market, where any team is liable to overpay. Peter Abraham speculates that Posada might require four years, $56MM, because that's what Mike Lowell wants. Speaking of Lowell - the Red Sox don't seem willing to stretch to add that fourth year. They're still negotiating, so maybe something creative can be done before Lowell starts fielding offers from other clubs. showad();

Yankees up contract offer to free-agent catcher Jorge Posada (AP)
2007-11-13 02:24:00 The New York Yankees made a new contract offer to Jorge Posada on Monday in an effort to re-sign the All-Star catcher before he hit the open market. New York also was trying to re-sign Mariano Rivera before Tuesday, when free agents could start talking money with all clubs. “Mariano already has been given an ...

Mets Targeting Jorge Posada
2007-10-31 16:44:00 We've seen the connection made many times already, but now consider the interest official. The Mets are targeting Jorge Posada. The Yankees are expected to offer a three-year, $40MM type deal to him soon. That's all well and good but I can see him getting four years and $56MM given the season he had. Perhaps the Yanks will extend themselves to that range though. The Mets are playing the field, as they've given Paul Lo Duca's agent an impression that they'll be making an offer. I like the idea of the Mets overpaying for Posada, as catcher is a clear position they can upgrade via free agency.

Posada Could Join Mets, Marlins
2007-10-24 16:29:00 George King has some Yankee info for us this morning, much of it involving Jorge Posada. Mark Feinsand noted yesterday that the Yanks plan to offer a three-year, $40MM contract to Posada. King is on board, indicating that he expects a three-year deal in the $39-44MM range for the catcher. I'm sticking to my guns - I think this requires four guaranteed years in the end. But upping the average annual value to arrive at a 3/45 deal seems plausible. King also mentions that the Mets and Marlins are both likely to be interested in Posada. The Mets are no surprise. But King indicates that the Fish have been "stockpiling dollars," which is news to me. Mostly we've been hearing that they want to make a low-level veteran signing or two but don't figure to be able to afford both Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera for 2008.

Sunday A-Rod Recap
2007-10-21 21:07:00 I hate to post about the same guy twice in a row, but there's been a flurry of Alex Rodriguez speculation on this fine October Sunday. To break it down, here's a brief recap: The New York Post reports the Yankees are expected to make an offer to prevent A-Rod from free agency. However, the offer will approach neither $300MM nor 12 years. I think this is both expected and a smart move by the Yanks because... Nick Cafardo likens Scott Boras' approach toward marketing A-Rod's "Iconic Value" to the exaggeratory strategy he took with Daisuke Matsuzaka. And Johnny Damon, for that matter. Bob Klapisch reports that in Torre's wake, there will be much posturing from Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, and Alex Rodriguez who we can expect to wait as long as possible to make any decision(s). And this is because... The New York Daily News' Mark Feinsand notes that "it is unlikely that the Yanks will have all of their issues resolved" before the ...

Yanks To Pursue Rowand?
2007-10-20 22:02:00 A source of mine with Yankee connections had some good info for me today. Much was discussed yesterday in Tampa. For starters, the Yanks are expected to make "eye-popping" offers to retain Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera before the World Series ends. The team does not want the pair to file for free agency. Additionally, the Yankees may make a big play for Aaron Rowand. They believe a package of Melky Cabrera, Chien-Ming Wang, and Ian Kennedy would entice the Twins for Johan Santana. That's a huge price, but doesn't seem out of line to me for the best pitcher in baseball. My source didn't have anything about Andy Pettitte, who hated seeing Joe Torre go and will take a month to decide if he's even going to play next year.

Cashman Takes Firm Stance On A-Rod
2007-10-18 18:04:00 When we last heard from him eight days ago, Brian Cashman left himself some wiggle room to negotiate with Alex Rodriguez even if he opts out in November and the Yankees lose the Texas money. The implication then was that higher-ranking club officials could overrule Cashman's recommendation. Yesterday, after the Yankees' meeting of the minds in Tampa, Cashman took a firmer stance: If Alex Rodriguez opts out of his contract then we will not participate in free agency. That is accurate and that is definitive. Why this is being aired out in public I'm not sure, but at this point the Yankees will seem kind of stupid if they do negotiate with Rodriguez after he opts out. It really seems that they're not kidding about not wanting to lose the Texas money or enter a bidding war. Meanwhile Scott Boras just spent three full days convincing A-Rod to opt out. However, Ken Davidoff believes that rather than opt out, A-Rod will sign an extension amounting to $297M...

More About That Team from the Bronx
2007-10-16 06:02:00 IGN Sports' Dan Phillips has come up with a list of recommendations for the Yankees as they try to "right" the 94-win ship, with the premise that "The Yanks should wave goodbye to sentimentality." I can't argue with two of them, ("Let Joe Torre Walk" and "Sign A-Rod") but the other two represent the opposite of good advice:2) Let Jorge Posada WalkPosada is coming off the best season by an aging catcher in baseball history, which is precisely why the Yankees should let some other team get suckered into paying him the big bucks. Aging catchers inevitably break down into mere shells of their former selves, and what's worse, they do it suddenly and without warning. Do you really want to fork over a three-year, 45 million-dollar contract to Posada on the assumption that he'll defy one of the few universal truths in baseball and produce offensively well into his late thirties? Just ask Red Sox fans how that worked out with Jason Varitek. Just one year after signing their oft-injured s...
As The Yankee World Turns - Mariano Riveria and Jorge Posada
2007-10-11 18:10:00 The latest episode of "As the Yankees World Turns" revolves around the storyline of Hall-of-Fame closer Mariano Riveria's looming free agency. He is telling everyone who will listen that he will explore leaving the Yankees via free agency if the Yankees do not bring back manager Joe Torre. He is not the only pending Yankees free agent saying this. Catcher Jorge Posada is also saying the same thing. Should the Yankees' organization bring back Torre if two very important, and almost irreplacable, pieces to the past 12 years' worth of success say they will consider other teams if the team doesn't do so? Maybe the real question is whether either would have done so anyhow? Recall the shabby treatment OF Bernie Williams was afforded last year after a career spent as a Yankee and as an integral part of the success of the frnachise. He was not given a major contract to come in and compete for the 5th OF job. Instead, he was given the option of a split...

Catcher Salaries
2007-10-10 20:43:00 Dan Graziano noted in his column today that Ivan Rodriguez may have set the market for Jorge Posada when his option was exercised. Posada was the game's second-highest paid catcher in 2007, with his $12MM salary behind only Jason Kendall's $13MM. Posada is coming off a .338/.426/.543 season, so he's going to break the bank. Some team is probably going to offer $15MM per year over four years. Now that Pudge is locked in at $13MM for '08, he's jumped to that top of the list. Behind him, Jason Varitek makes $9MM and Ramon Hernandez earns $7.5MM next year. Ramon Castro should prepare for a huge raise - he made $850K in '07 but could be around $4MM in '08. Many catchers will definitely have to take a pay cut. Kendall won't get $13MM again, of course. Paul Lo Duca probably won't pull $6.25MM. Jason LaRue will come down from this year's $5.2MM. Michael Barrett at $4.6MM? Probably not. Brad Ausmus at $3.5MM?&...

The Best Rivalry in Sports; And Give Props to Jorge Posada [Addison Quale]
2007-09-16 07:39:00 Did you see last night?s game between the Sox and Yanks? I?m sorry, but this has got to be the best rivalry in sports hands down. Just when we can?t imagine any more drama between these two teams, it just keeps getting better. First of all, Friday night was pretty much a disaster for Boston. Ahead 6 runs late in the game, and they can?t hold it? It?s pathetic. And as I heard one sports writer say, ?Just as the Angels are in the Yankees? heads, the Yankees are in the Sox heads.? The Yankees KNOW they can beat the Sox. And not only that, A-Rod knows he can beat Papelbon?the biggest defensive weapon the Sox have, who has been terrorizing AL hitters for the last month. So Friday?s game was huge.And then last night?s game featured the 2 winningest pitchers in the AL in Wang and Beckett. The stakes were high for that matchup and considering the Sox were still intent on breaking up the Yankees ten year stranglehold on the AL East. The game was deadlocked at 1-1 for most of the game. That i...

Lisa Kennelly Loves the Wang
2007-09-15 08:11:00 Chien-Ming Wang might be on the verge of stealing the Cy Young Award from a number of better-qualified candidates. So, Lisa Kennelly of the Neward Star-Ledger asks, why doesn't anybody love him? What Wang is doing is making a quiet case as one of the majors' best, compiling a big-league best 37-12 record the past two seasons. He is 5-0 in his past six starts and has not lost since Aug. 8 in Toronto. He has a 3.69 ERA, and has allowed only eight home runs. And yet Wang's achievements are often overshadowed by pitchers such as Beckett, 5-1 with a 2.90 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 49 2/3 innings over his past seven starts, or the Indians' C.C. Sabathia, also a Cy Young contender at 17-7 going into last night's start. "I have no idea (why)," Posada said. "He is underappreciated. I think he's been very good all year."No idea, huh? Could it be that he's simply not as good as Beckett and Sabathia? Or Johan Santana? Or Dan Haren, Erik Bedard, Fausto Carmona, John Lackey, Kelvim Escob...
Who is the "Truest" Yankee of Them All?
2007-09-10 06:28:00 Mike Lupica of the NY Daily News feels that Joba Chamberlain's career path should mimic that of the greatest Yankee of the last decade. But Chamberlain's future isn't the only thing he's wrong about. In addition, the man doesn't even realize who the best Yankee of the last decade is:Joba Chamberlain is going to be a big Yankee starter, I get that. Going to be such a tremendous Yankee starter that they can't pitch him two days in a row while he's a reliever. I get that. And good for Brian Cashman to take the long view on a guy pitching short relief. What I don't get: Why can't Joba Chamberlain be groomed to be the Mo Rivera of the future?He could be. And from the looks of it, he'd have considerable success in the closer role. But great closers aren't as valuable as great, or even very good, starters. The most innings Mariano Rivera has ever thrown in a year is 107 2/3, as a setup man in 1996. Since becoming a closer, his highest IP total is 80 2/3, in 2001. Since succe...

Interested In A Massive Lawsuit? Help Pen A New Book About The Yankees!
2007-07-24 22:21:00 Some of you may remember a few years ago, when former Yankee clubhouse worker Paul Priore sued the New York Yankees for $165 million. The case was eventually thrown out, but Priore made explosive accusations, claiming he was fired for being gay and HIV positive, and was sexually harassed by members of the Yankees during the 1996 and 1997 seasons.Well, now he has jut put up an ad on Craigslist, seeking a co-author for a book he's writing about his time working for the Yankees. The ad reads like this:"I have many fascinating 'insider' stories to tell about the New York Yankees, some of which are rather seamy. I would like to find an experienced co-writer to work with me on an explosive, 'tell-all' book about my experiences at the New York Yankees, which will include detailed and vivid descriptions of the many things that I witnessed, overheard, or was otherwise privy to, during the time period that I worked for my father or directly for the team. The right candidate needs to have...
