Giants Claim Jose Castillo
2008-03-22 17:18:00 According to Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Giants claimed infielder Jose Castillo off waivers and the Marlins didn't pull him back. I believe the Marlins can now either work out a trade with the Giants or just let them have him and his $650K salary. One of today's writers, Alejandro, noted that Castillo is already on the Giants' 40-man roster on MLB.com. Pure speculation, but this may be a signal that the Giants are done considering trade options such as Wes Helms, Brandon Inge, and Joe Crede. Giving up something decent for Inge or Crede never made sense for this team anyway. Castillo probably won't do much for the Giants, but at least he doesn't cost anything.

Jose Castillo Available
2008-03-21 18:57:00 The Florida Marlins have placed Jose Castillo on waivers, it's not unconditional waivers so they can pull him back and are probably just testing the market. The Marlins are looking for an inexpensive fifth starter and have a glut of relatively cheap infielders. The Marlins appear to be willing to sacrifice defense for offense by going with Jorge Cantu, while McPherson and Amazega would be the back-up utility players. Castillo skipped AAA coming straight to the majors with the Pirates in 2004 as the starting second baseman. Castillo held the position for three years, but in 2007 when he struggled at the plate to start the year he was up-staged by Freddy Sanchez. Castillo is 27 y/o right hander with a lifetime BA .256 and a Slg .380 ( 2006: 25/2B - 14/HR) he can play every infield position and is a defensive up-grade over Gotay. In trying to find playing time last year he started practicing the corner outfield positions, which is where he plays every year in winter ball and ended up ...

Marlins Waive Jose Castillo
2008-03-21 13:36:00 The Marlins put infielder Jose Castillo on waivers today, though they have the option of pulling him back. It seems like a way to gauge interest. The Marlins may prefer to let Jorge Cantu play third regularly, as he's had a strong spring and has a decent track record (insert obligatory 117 RBI season mention here). The Marlins also have Dallas McPherson in the mix if he can get healthy. Castillo could make sense for the Dodgers given his versatility, though he's never hit much.

Jose Castillo Out?
2008-03-21 00:38:00 Joe Frisaro is reporting that there are grumblings in the clubhouse that Jose Castillo will not make the team. It’s clear that Jorge Cantu had a great Spring and Dallas McPherson is injured. I’m wondering whether the Fish think Cantu and Alfredo Amezaga will play 3rd and then have Jason Wood backup first. ...

Marlins Sign Jose Castillo
2007-12-25 19:19:00 The Marlins signed infielder Jose Castillo yesterday. Castillo turns 27 in March. The Fish are slotting him into their third base vacancy, though second base with an accompanying Dan Uggla shift is a possibility. I took an in-depth look at Castillo here. I believe skipping Triple A threw off his development; a return to that level might be wise. Castillo currently doesn't have the bat of an average second baseman, so he's definitely not worthy of the hot corner. showad();

Jose Castillo Requests Trade
2007-05-13 16:53:00 According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 26 year-old second baseman Jose Castillo had his agent ask the Pirates for a trade. Devan Kovacevic says Castillo was widely available this winter but generated little interest. He names the Mets as a possible suitor given Jose Valentin's injury. As I mentioned in my Castillo Let's Make A Deal post, outside of a single month (May '06), Castillo hasn't really done anything to justify a starting job. He skipped Triple A, and might benefit from playing every day at that level.

A Hard Look at Jose Castillo - Turning the DP
2007-03-07 22:35:02 This is Part III of the A Hard Look at Jose Castillo series. Part I is here [link] and Part II is here [link]. One of the comments made by reader "rick" about my evaluation in Part II was this:"As far as zone rating goes, my point isn't that Castillo's got worse last year. My point is that Castillo's is consistently bad. And I disagree with your analysis of zone rating. It isn't perfect, but it's good."It's a great point and one I want to address. One of the best discussions ever held on the Internet about the limitations of STATS, Inc's Zone Rating (ZR) was in 2005 at The Baseball Think Factory [link]. Not only was ZR explained in detail, many of the web's most talented, and well known, sabermetric analysts talked openly about its limitations. Over the last few years, many statheads have drifted to John Dewan's Fielding Bible as a better ZR source because he eliminates as many of the limitations as possible. He does such a good job, almost all of the te...

A Hard Look at Jose Castillo - 2006 Errors
2007-03-05 22:31:01 This is Part II of the Hard Look at Jose Castillo series. Part I is here: [link]. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ran an article today where they speculated whether or not the 2007 team would be better defensively than last year's team [link]. One of the statements made in the article by the Pirates beat reporter was:"Assuming Jose Castillo keeps his job at second base, it is hard to imagine him making 18 errors again, including, amazingly for someone at his position, 15 on throws."First, the reporter's statement is factually incorrect -- Castillo had three throwing errors last year. I assume the reporter just read his notes wrong. Jack Wilson actually had 3 times as many throwing errors as Jose Castillo did. Secondly, while we know Castillo made 18 errors last year, nobody seems to know what kind of errors they were. And more importantly, if the errors were the type that any second baseman should have made or not. Only five second baseman in MLB had 700 or more total chance...
