5/14/09 - Jose Reyes - Hogan's Goat
2009-05-14 19:57:00 Jose Reyes seems to always make the big mistake reminding me of a name assigned to myself by a Bayonne cop as a youth. Some thoughts about how Jose may eventually redeem himself.
Jose Reyes: Then and Now
2008-05-29 18:00:00 While taking full advantage of my MLB Extra Innings package last night a scrolling bottom line informed me that Mets shortstop Jose Reyes hit his 7th home run. At that point it dawned on me that a) Reyes is on pace for a career high in home runs and b) I have not been ...

Odds and Ends: Wilder, Vlad, Jose Reyes
2008-05-19 12:29:00 Time to round up some links. The White Sox fired scouting director David Wilder and two scouts. Investigators are trying to determine if they skimmed bonuses designated for Latin American prospects. I did a Q&A recently. I forgot, at the time, that Albert Pujols is actually younger than Chase Utley. Imagine if Vladimir Guerrero had been paired with Barry Bonds. Joel Sherman points out that Jose Reyes will be just 28 when his contract is up. Roto Professor chats with prospect guy Jonathan Mayo. Extension talks with Corey Hart have fizzled.

Leave Jose Reyes Alone, Sort Of
2008-02-29 20:45:00 It's spring training. Not a whole lot going on so reporters need something to talk about now that the Johan Santana story line is getting stale. So what's the logical next controversial topic? How about criticizing Jose Reyes.Reyes slump in the last two months of the season last year caused many a critic to scrutinize his "born to hand jive" attitude in the dugout and the occasional dancing he seen doing in the midst of close games. People talk about how it's juvenile, or that it ticks off the opposing team.I say, leave my Jose Reyes alone. The Reyes smile should not (and better not) go away. It's that childish smile and attitude is part of what makes him a likable and exciting player to watch. There's no doubt when you watch Jose Reyes that the guy enjoys the game of baseball. You don't need to have the demeanor of John Olerud to be a great baseball player. However, Reyes is not excused from all criticism. If you want to criticize him about his lackluster effort running out ba...

Mets? Jose Reyes says he looks forward to several more years in New York (A
2007-12-11 23:42:00 Mets shortstop Jose Reyes said he’s glad the team won’t be including him in any deal to land Minnesota Twins ace Johan Santana. The speedy 24-year-old shortstop told TV reporters in his Caribbean homeland that he grew worried when he heard his name mentioned in trade rumors for Santana, but relaxed when Mets’ management said ...

Mets GM Omar Minaya says he won?t trade All-Star SS Jose Reyes (AP)
2007-11-30 03:31:00 The New York Mets need pitching and they’d love to land Johan Santana. Not enough to trade star shortstop Jose Reyes, though. “Jose Reyes is one of our core players,” general manager Omar Minaya said Thursday. “I don’t see us trading Jose Reyes for one of those guys being mentioned. It just doesn’t make sense ...

MLB Rumors: Jose Reyes For Johan Santana?
2007-11-29 15:04:00 The latest speculation in New York that has the tongues wagging is the Twins' trade of their SS Jason Bartlett in the Delmon Young trade. The natural conclusion is the Mets are going to deal Jose Reyes in a trade for Johan Santana. John Harper of the NY Daily News writes:But would Minaya give up shortstop Jose Reyes to make it happen? "I know he wouldn't want to," said the executive [who knows Minaya]. "But I do believe he'll think long and hard about it if he absolutely has to. As explosive as Reyes is, Omar needs pitching to win a championship, and it has become so hard these days to acquire front-line pitching that I think he'd have to consider it." And if this report from Wallace Matthews of Long Island's Newsday is correct, then the Mets would have to include Reyes to top the Yankees' offer. He relays from "an organizational source [that told him] yesterday they would now consider parting not just with Kennedy or Hughes, but Kennedy and Hughes plus Cabr...

Mets Interested In Santana, Dotel, Chacon
2007-11-27 16:52:00 The New York Post's Mark Hale has an update for us regarding the Mets' pursuit of pitching. Even though the Wilpons haven't made any declarations to the media, the Mets are showing interest in Johan Santana. Hale notes a couple of stipulations: David Wright, Jose Reyes, and Carlos Beltran won't be dealt, and the Mets would want a 72-hour negotiation window. I don't think anyone expected anything different on either point. The Twins could certainly use an influx of outfield talent, and the Mets have it. Octavio Dotel is one free agent on the Mets' radar, though we've known that since the 16th. "On the radar" is getting overused...I need an alternative. Dotel would be fine with a setup role, though I'm guessing it would take two years and $12MM or more. Dotel came up through the Mets' system as a starter, and was traded to the Astros in '99 in the Mike Hampton/Derek Bell/Roger Cedeno deal. The Tigers and Royals may also be ...

Top Fantasy Baseball Players - Jose Reyes?
2007-11-06 12:07:00 Jose Reyes is consistently considered to be one of the top fantasy baseball hitters. My question is WHY? Roy Oswalt for Jose Reyes
2007-11-01 13:53:00 Rumors, rumors, rumors. That's what the hot stove season is for, and we as fans love it. This latest rumor though has me a little disappointed.Late yesterday afternoon, a rumor was start that the Mets might look to trade Jose Reyes to the Astros for Roy Oswalt. Now any of you that have read this blog previously know of my blogging partner's and my infatuation with Roy Oswalt in a Mets uniform. He struggled early this past season, but Oswalt is possibly the most consistent pitcher in the major leagues over the past 5 years.Even so, I don't want to give up Jose Reyes. For Johann Santana? Maybe. I just think Reyes is too special of a player to give up at this point. He's that marquee lead off batter that is too hard to find and that the Mets have lacked for so long.Still the chance to get Oswalt is huge and shows that Omar and the Mets brass know they need to make some big moves this offseason. I like that thinking, but let's not give up on Reyes yet.

Heyman's Latest
2007-10-11 01:11:00 SI.com's Jon Heyman has a new column up, with some minor info. Heyman's sources describe a Jose Reyes for Johan Santana rumor as "pure fantasy." Well...who said it was ever anything more? Buster Olney was clearly just playing Let's Make A Deal when he devised it. Things get twisted around easily. Most of us already figured this, but Heyman says the White Sox will go after either Aaron Rowand or Torii Hunter this winter. Heyman puts the Angels, Dodgers, Red Sox, Giants, Cubs, Mets, and Phillies into the A-Rod derby if the Yanks don't keep him. No offense to Jon but this column really lacked any kind of new info.

Don't Sell Out Jose Reyes Quite Yet
2007-10-10 20:11:00 Man, we're tough in New York. A guy wins a couple World Series, makes the playoffs every year, now he's going to be fired. That's the place we live, and now Mets fans are ready to turn on Jose Reyes. We've even talked about here in this blog, but we've come to realize the error of our ways and I'm here to tell you that you shouldn't sell out Jose Reyes quite yet.Let's flashback to April of 2007. Jose Reyes was the talk of baseball. An MVP year was expected. Derek Jeter called him the most exciting player in baseball. Joe Morgan christened him as possibly one of the best players we'll ever see play the game. And you know what? He looked like it the first 3 months of the season. In May any team in baseball would have given their first-born child to get Jose Reyes. But now Mets fans are looking like they are done with him.Did Jose Reyes utterly collapse the second half of the season? Yes. Did he look lost at the plate? Absolutely. Did he appear to be complacent at times by not r...

Braun's Defense Should Cost Him Rookie of the Year
2007-09-28 15:38:00 Milwaukee Brewers 3B Ryan Braun is an amazing hitter. But to call him a butcher on defense is an insult to knife-wielding swine slicers. In fact, it is not an exaggeration to call Braun the worst defensive player of any starter in the Major Leagues. The Brewers lost 9-5 to the San Diego Padres on Thursday, blowing a chance to gain a game on the Chicago Cubs, who had lost earlier in the day. One of the main culprits in the loss was Braun, who committed not one, not two, but three errors at third base.Braun's is fielding is so atrocious, it should be enough for Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to win the National League Rookie of the Year. Will it happen? Probably not. Writers often forget there are two parts to the game and concentrate solely on offensive numbers. And there is no doubt Braun has had an amazing year at the plate, but Tulowitzki isn't that far off. In 440 at-bats, Braun has hit .325/.370/.639, with 24 doubles, 34 HR and 95 RBI. Meanwhile, in 590 at-bats, Tulowitzki h...

Sticking Up for the Little Guy
2007-09-02 09:11:00 Jimmy Rollins won't be eligible for the Hall of Fame for many years, but Philadelphia Daily News columnist Bill Conlin is already clumsily making the case for his induction:Jimmy's already a lot bigger than Pee WeeNot so fast there, Bill. First of all, "Pee Wee" was actually taller than Jimmy. Reese was 5'9", and Rollins is listed at 5'8". Reese even had 15 pounds on Rollins. And if you're referring to their production, well, just wait and see. They used to be baseball's welterweight division. Legs and leather were their skill set. Lumber was a plus.I assume you're referring to shortstops. Well, lumber was a plus, but some exceptions to the norm still, you know, swung a good deal of it.With extremely rare exceptions, they could bat only leadoff, No. 2 or No. 8. The 2-hole guy usually lacked the foot speed to lead off and often was a second baseman. But he was an expert at taking pitches so the leadoff man could steal second. He also could hit behind a runner or bunt him over....
Jose Reyes: Mets Stolen Base King
2007-08-23 15:27:00 Jose Reyes passed Roger Cedeno last night for the Mets' single season record for stolen bases with his 67th stolen base.My hat's off to you Jose, but I do expect seasons of 90 and possibly 100 stolen bases before his career is over. I also love the fact that when he gets thrown out it doesn't stop him from stealing the next time he's on base.I'd love to see Reyes grab 85 bases before this year is out. Larceny attitude, my fellow Mets Lifers, gotta love it.

Mid-Season Awards [David Stefanini]
2007-07-12 18:45:00 With the baseball season set to kickoff the second half of the year, I figured this would be a good time to say who I feel are deserving of the major awards. NL MVP - Jose Reyes: Surely I am biased with this vote, seeing how Jose is my favorite player, but he deserves this award. Think about it. The New York Mets are completely torn apart with injuries. From there bullpen, to their starting rotation, to complete decimation of the outfield, and considering Carlos Delgado lost his swing, there still in first place! Why? Jose Reyes. He has an OBP of .387 and is making the rest of the Majors look bad when it comes to stealing bases. He gets on first, he steals second maybe even third, and scores a run. When he is on base the pitcher and defense gets so nervous they commit many unforced errors. Reyes in the MVP. AL MVP - ARod: Not even close here. I have heard many people give the award to Magglio Ordonez or Vladimir Guerrero, give me a break. ARod is having a year for the record books. ...

What Is Wrong With Jose Reyes
2007-06-30 01:55:00 Jose Reyes hits the half way point (or nearly so) on pace to replicate every stat he produced last season. His AVG is up as are his SBs. He walks are way up, too. An almost identical OPS hints at the exception, though. If his walks and AVG are up, then the "O" part of "OPS" (On-base-percentage) is higher. That leads to the conclusion that the "S" portion is down (Slugging percentage). Reyes' doubles are the same as are his triples and that leaves the one extra-base category that is the most sexy - home runs. Jose Reyes has three going into today's doubleheader. Last year, he hit 19. All prognostications for 2008 depended on Reyes duplicating that power while continuing to hold steady or improve on his 2006 production. There is just one stat that hints at the difference in HR production. His percentage of fly balls that are hit for HRs is down nearly 70% from the 2006 levels (10.6% versus 3.2%). Is this a fluke? I do not know, but he is hitting more flyballs relative to groundballs...

Blog Reactions After Amazin's Win [J. Mark English]
2007-06-16 13:34:00 The Mets snapped their losing streak last night behind a brilliant pitching performance of Oliver Perez. Roger Clemens took his first loss, although he did very well in a 2-0 pitching duel. Jose Reyes was the catalyst behind the Mets win, including a monster home run into the right field upper deck. Here are some reactions from both a Mets blog, and a Yankees blog:...maybe the bright lights of a big series is what the Mets needed to play some crisp baseball, especially defensively... ...give a game ball to reyes, who was 3-for-3 with a home run, 2 rbi and 3 stolen bases... ...give another game ball to Carlos Gomez for a ridunculous Endy Chavez-esque catch between the outstretched arms of yankee fans to take away a home run from Miguel Cairo and throw a strike to second to peg Hideki Matsui at second for an inning-ending double play... ...the effectively wild Oliver Perez did a terrific job settling down after the third inning, compiling 13 straight outs before exiting in the eigh...

Jose Reyes
2007-05-24 04:31:00 I did it. I tried to rationalize it away, but, ultimately, I could not. I just acquired Mets' SS Jose Reyes in a trade. My team is stuck in the middle of the league standings with just 4 points in SBs but two steals away from two points. It is also clocking in at an unbelievably low .249 AVG. A difference maker in SBs and an asset in AVG screams, "Jose Reyes!" The question was what to pay. Given Reyes' owner had already appoached me with certain players very soon after our draft, I opened with an offer of a $5 Stephen Drew, Pirates top prospect Andrew McCutchen and Dodger's top prospect Clayton Kershaw. He countered that he'd like me to include Dodgers' closer-in-waiting Jonathan Broxton in any deal that he would eventually consider when he committed to dealing Reyes. Now I had to decide whether to drop one of the minor leaguers and add Broxton or tag Broxton on to the original offer to force the deal. With nervous anticipation, I added Brox...

What If I Drafted Jose Reyes Part II
2007-04-12 00:00:00 In Part I, I examined what my pitching staff would have looked like had I gone $53 for Jose Reyes in the NL-only keeper league draft. I concluded I was better off with the pitching staff I drafted due to the extra dollars available that landed me a $17 Pedro Martinez. As for my hitters, I cannot be so sure. After drafting C Chris Iannetta for $14, my next draftee was 3B Scott Rolen for $26 followed by UT Aaron Rowand for $14, C Carlos Ruiz for $3, Terrmel Sledge for $12 and CR Alberto Callaspo for $5. However, in this what-if scenario, I did not have the cap to draft Rolen, Rowand and Sledge because I had just $27 to get four players. With a UT filled by Reyes, I would have still drafted Ruiz for $3. Given he was a potential target, I would have held back cash for him. This leaves me with 3 players to draft with $24. Callaspo was still a target and just the type of player I'd be looking for - a hitter who could produce double digit value if a few break...

Jose Reyes: Having Unreal Spring
2007-03-19 02:09:00 Mets SS Jose Reyes hit his fourth spring homer during Sunday's game against the Cardinals. He is now 16-for-47 (.340) with 10 runs, one double, one triple, eight RBI and seven stolen bases in 14 spring games. Reyes is having an unreal spring campaign. He is certainly justifying his ranking among the top five Fantasy options in mixed leagues. If this is just a sample of things to come, how can you not get excited about his 2007 prospectus.
