Philippine Journalists Kidnapped
2008-06-11 05:24:00
Journalism here in the Philippines is quite competitive, but the bad news is that if journalists are too aggressive, they put themselves in danger. This seems to be what happened to an ABS-CBN news crew who disappeared yesterday. Drilon, her team and Dinampo went missing Sunday after leaving a college hostel in Maimbung town. Drilon and her ...

Student journalists offer 1 side
2008-06-03 16:58:00
There are always at least two sides to any story ? unless that story happens to be about sports on college campuses. Or so it appears based upon a recent survey of college sports journalists. (A few weeks ago, I surveyed 72 college sports journalists and college advisers, along with 79 sports information directors. The results will be published in College Media Review.)More than half of those responding say they rarely or never interview players and coaches from opposing teams for any of the following stories ? gamers, previews, profiles, and features. Just over 10 percent of all college sports journalists say they interview opposing players and coaches for these same stories. That's a shame. Sports journalists cannot be lazy reporters. Sportswriters already have a poor reputation as borderline journalists who write for the toys department or serve as PR hacks for teams even though some of the finest reporters can be found in the sports department. Unless a locker room is closed, t...

Putin Calls U.S. `Frightening Monster,? Urges French Solidarity

INDIAN JOURNALISTS IN UK ARE PROTESTING AGAINST OUTSOURCING
2008-05-15 22:13:00
Outsourcing of jobs has irked the first world nationals and political leaders, and now it's turn of the people to lose their jobs who once lived in countries like India, Pakistan and Srilanka and currently employed with BBC in UK. BBC World Service which among other languages also broadcasts in South Asian languages like Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and Sinhali has decided to relocate 50% of its staff closer to where the action actually lies. These journalists have been told to their respective countries and cover news from there or face redundancy. Mostly London based journalists will be affected. They are asked to accept downgraded salaries.Journalists are protesting, holding events and crying foul against BBC's 'money saving adventure.' Mike Gardner, Head of Media Relations at the BBC World Service says, "The proposed redeployments of staff to India, Pakistan and Nepal recognise the new media realities in those countries. It aims to serve our audiences in th...

Journalists Investigate A Possible Link Between Diddy And Tupac Assault
2008-03-27 20:38:00
In 1994, Tupac Shakur was left beaten and suffering gunshot woulds at Quad Recording Studios in New York. At the time, Tupac said that friends of rap mogul Sean Diddy Combs (Diddy, P. Diddy, Puffy, what-have-you) ordered the hit. Last week, The Los Angeles Times published an article that revealed newly discovered information that supported Tupac's affirmations, including a possible motive to punish Tupac for disrespecting Diddy and rejecting business offers.

Journalists are ready for the Big Cliche
2008-03-20 00:27:00
I feel like putting on my dancing shoes, baby. It's time for the Big Dance where a Cinderella always pops up. And it's also that time when cliches run rampant. Writers and editors especially love using the Big Dance, but they also enjoy many other cliches. Many of these cliches are overused well before the NCAA Tournament begins. Games are frequently called tilts, teams fight back when their backs are against the wall, victories are hard-fought, and players assert ther will. Headline writers particularly love to use Big Dance. TV Guide plays off the Irish dance troupe, writing: "Lords of the Big Dance: NCAA March Madness 2008 Preview." And Austin Peay's editors are excited that the "Govs advance to the big dance," although the reporter refrained from using that term. ESPN writes that "Cinderellas at Big Dance share common attributes." Detroit Free-Press editors wrote that Michigan State's women were "left off 64-team Big Dance card."The Sporting News breaks down the game between...

Roget: 'headline writers and journalists'
2008-03-16 15:10:00
There was an interesting article on Peter Roget, creator of the thesaurus, in The Times' Books section yesterday. I took a little exception at the following though:At its worst, [a thesaurus] is a crutch, for crossword enthusiasts, students desperate to imply a little learning in an essay crisis, headline writers, nervous after-dinner speakers and, yes, journalists.Headline writers and journalists? All the headline writers I've ever met have been journalists. Perhaps Ben Macintyre, who is the author of this piece, means 'headline writers and other journalists'.In the same way, it bugs me when people (including some of my colleagues) refer to 'production staff and journalists'. Sub editors and designers can be journalists too!Wikipedia agrees with me on this.

What journalists can do: The AP?s water story
2008-03-11 00:05:00
You probably haven’t heard of Jeff Donn, Martha Mendoza and Justin Pritchard. But because of them, you may be thinking twice about the water you drink ? especially if you live in Philadelphia. Mr. Donn, Ms. Mendoza, and Mr. Pritchard wrote and reported the story that reveals “[a] vast array of pharmaceuticals ? including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones ? have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans.” (Elsewhere at S&R, my colleague Martin discusses what this all means.) The three reporters did extensive work on this story: Members of the AP National Investigative Team reviewed hundreds of scientific reports, analyzed federal drinking water databases, visited environmental study sites and treatment plants and interviewed more than 230 officials, academics and scientists. They also surveyed the nation’s 50 largest cities and a dozen other major water providers, as well as smaller communit...
7 Ways for Journalists To Save Money
2008-03-09 02:42:00
Being a journalist can involve a lot of travel to do interviews for newspapers, television or radio and can rack up many expenses that can occur at the last minute that may not be covered by your job. These expenses can make it difficult to make ends meet. To save money create a budget and look for ways to reduce expenses. Here are 7 ways for journalists to save money: 1. Travel Discounts. Comparison shop for discounts on parking or air, hotel and rental cars or buy as packages. Some companies that provide discount fares LongTermParking, HotDeals, SideStep, and Kayak. Sign up for online alerts with airlines to learn about their weekly specials. Search for fares early in the morning or on weekends. Check to see if they accept discounts for membership to Diner's Clubs, AAA, AARP, etc. This can save you $30 to $175 per transaction.2. Supplies and Expenses. Shop for office supplies at Costco or online sites such as Amazon. Consider setting up a home office. You can write off a por...
Saturday Video Roundup: when journalists attack
2008-03-08 16:42:00
Pimpin’ Journalism ain’t easy. Odd hours, low pay, audiences that don’t appreciate the effort you put into making their world a better place. One of these days we’ll do an SVR on journalists, but today we’re talking about TV reporters, and yeah, they can have it rough, too. Take this guy. It’s not bad enough that he’s 130 years old and out trolling East Hell for stories at all hours of the night, but watch what happens to him starting at around the 1:00 mark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pOc4XgBespw Yow. Nice teamwork. That’s like having Terrell Owens as your anchor, huh? Next, you know how you’re watching a live report and there’s always a drunk, an idiot, or a drunk idiot behind the reporter working his 15 seconds of fame for all it’s worth? You have to figure that gets on the reporter’s nerves, don’t you? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-h_trGNU86k0 Now, I know we’ve all wanted to club a FOX ...

An International Study on the Perceptions of Newspaper Journalists on Value
2008-02-22 17:11:00
by Dr. Prem Lal Joshi An online international survey of Newspaper journalists, on the topic of Value-based journalism (VBJ) reveals that they pride themselves for adhering to "truth and accuracy" and "verification of facts". These are among the top core values of reporting news and views. More than 90% of respondents stated this, a survey I conducted. In the values hierarchy, 89.6% of them also stated that they adhere to the value of " public interest" . "Objectivity" and "independence" were rated fourth equally. Objectivity is considered a debatable point in journalism. Respondents from all the five continents similarly rated transparency, completeness, accountability, compassion and perseverance, the survey reported. "Avoiding violation of others privacy", "loyalty," and "aggressiveness" received lower ranking in the value hierarchy for most of the contin...

Another couple of journalists who don?t understand basic science
2008-02-21 01:40:00
Yesterday, I wrote about a Florida columnist who’s so poorly educated and ill-read that she could neither construct a cogent argument nor recognize a ridiculous misstatement about Newton’s second law of thermodynamics that would be obvious to my middle-schooler.   Today, I find this report from Reuters that completely misses the story, and for the same reason:  a fundamental misunderstanding of science and the most basic scientific terminology. The real story here is that those in favor of teaching evolution won an even bigger victory than they could have hoped for, and they won it because their opponents also don’t understand scientific basics. The great State of Florida has finally decided to revise language in its biology classrooms that banned the word “evolution” in favor of a mealy-mouthed “changes over time.”  After all, it is the 19th 20th 21st century, right?  Biblical creationists and their crypto-brethren adherents to intelligent ...
CNN Tells Journalists to Be Kind to Castro
2008-02-20 21:23:00
I guess we should be taking CNN's "Reporting" with a huge grain of salt from now on: From: Flexner, AllisonSent: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 7:46 AMTo: *CNN Superdesk (TBS)Cc: Neill, Morgan; Darlington, ShastaSubject: Castro guidance Some points on Castro ? for adding to our anchor reads/reporting: * Please say in our reporting that Castro stepped down in a letter he wrote to Granma (the communist party daily), as opposed to in a letter attributed to Fidel Castro. We have no reason to doubt he wrote his resignation letter, he has penned numerous articles over the past year and a half. * Please note Fidel did bring social reforms to Cuba ? namely free education and universal health care, and racial integration. in addition to being criticized for oppressing human rights and freedom of speech. * Also the Cuban government blames a lot of Cuba?s economic problems on the US embargo, and while that has caused some difficulties, (far less so than the collapse of the Soviet Union) the bulk...
When it comes to journalists, what about quality?
2008-02-19 23:28:00
(With apologies to Dr. Denny, whom I admire greatly, and who would certainly fix journalism if he could.) Lost in the justified hand-wringing over the loss of newspaper jobs, and the inevitable reduction in the number of important stories journalists can uncover, is the issue of “quality.” I mourn the loss of quantity in the journalistic ranks as much as anyone, and I’m betting more than some, but I am more concerned with quality these days. I happened to run across these two articles, here and here, by Alva James-Johnson, a columnist for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Perhaps things have changed, but in my brief brush with newspapers many years ago, one did not become a columnist until one had demonstrated a depth of knowledge, insight, erudition, and quality of thought that qualified one for something near the top of one’s profession. Columnists were the cream of the crop. I hope, based on this example, that this is not the case these days. Take this state...
Urgently seeking journalists
2008-02-19 18:55:00
As has been widely noted, Alex Hilton has uncovered a rather bizarre leaked email and posted it on LabourHome. It originates from the Daily Mail journalist Diana Appleyard, who is searching for case studies, which is not an usual occurrence. Assuming it is real, what is striking is how cynical she is when approaching the issue:-----Original Message-----From: rsreply@dwpub.com [mailto:rsreply@dwpub.com]Sent:- 13 February 2008 15:57To:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxxxSubject: Response Source - Diana Appleyard , Daily Mail (Request for personal case study) PUBLICATION: Daily Mail (Request for personal case study)JOURNALIST: Diana Appleyard (staff)DEADLINE: 14-February-2008 16:00QUERY: I am urgently looking for anonymous horror stories of people who have employed Eastern European staff, only for them to steal from them, disappear, or have lied about their resident status. Of sad events and cheap journalists...
2008-02-17 07:54:00
New York Post Noobs Inserito originariamente da Abriael Looks like there still are journalists (even if I'm not exactly sure they're worthy of such definition) that can't resist taking a cheap shot at videogames when something bad happens. About the recent rampage of college student Steven Kazmierczak, that caused several victims in Illinois, Mr MICHAEL SWIONTEK and Mr BILL SANDERSON of New York Post, didn't find any better explanation than the fact that the murderer used to play Counterstrike about 4 years ago. In the article they put a lot of emphasis on Mr. Kazmierczak's short lived video-gaming career, and skimmed on the fact that he wasn't taking his meds as it was an uninportant detail.Personally, I find this silly attitude some journalists have towards videogames terribly tasteless, and I always wonder what they think they'll achieve by spreading this kind of disinformation. One thing is for sure, Mr. Swiontek and Mr. Sanderson are what here in Italy we define "Ar...

Trojans, Journalists and Spies
2008-02-05 19:06:00
by Dr. Paul J. Balles In Homer's story of the Trojan War, the Greeks created a clever plan to get into the city of Troy. They built a huge wooden horse and set it outside the city. The army retreated, and the Trojans, fascinated by the gift horse, took it inside the city. Once inside, the Greek troops hiding inside the Trojan horse emerged, attacked the guards and opened the gate for the Greeks to invade. In modern parlance, "Trojan" has been used to describe condoms, a hacker's tool to invade your PC, and a special communication device that could be planted by naval commandos deep inside enemy territory. Describing how Mossad, Israel's Intelligence and covert action agency used Trojans, former Israeli Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky wrote: “A Trojan was a device that would act as a relay station for misleading transmissions made by the disinformation unit in the Mossad, called LAP, and intended to be received by American and British listening stations. 65 journalists killed in world in 2007, group says
2008-02-05 06:04:00
By Patrick Worsnip UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - At least 65 journalists were killed around the world because of their work last year, the highest figure for 13 years, and nearly half of them died in Iraq, a leading media watchdog reported on Monday. The figure compiled by the Committee to Protect Journalists, or CPJ, in its annual report, "Attacks on the Press," was one more than that cited by the New York-based group in a Dec. 18 statement and compares with 56 in 2006. The 2007 toll is one lower than the 66 journalists killed in 1994 but that figure was swollen by the genocide in Rwanda. Other groups have reported higher figures, with Paris-based Reporters Without Borders saying 86 journalists were killed last year. CPJ says it applies the strictest criteria for the work-related nature of deaths and is still checking 23 cases. In Iraq, 32 journalists -- the same figure as in 2006 -- were killed last year, all but one of them Iraqis, as well as 12 media support worke...

Seven outlawed Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants, who have been sentenced to life imprisonment for carrying out bomb blasts in Chapainawabganj on August 17, 2005 when an estimated 500 explosions took place across the country, beat up journalists outside a court in Rajshahi. Chanting religious slogans after their verdict was announced on Thursday, the militants attacked two journalists -- Zahid Hasan of the Banglavision Television Channel (for taking video footage of the militants) and Abdullah Iqbal. The cameras of the two journalists were damaged in the melee. The militants also threw their sandals at the newsmen, the Daily Star reported on Friday. Judge ATM Mesbauddoula at the Speedy Trial Court fined the militants 10,000 Takas (145 dollars) each. If they fail to pay, they will have to undergo a year's additional jail term. Those sentenced include Tufan, Shahidullah Faruk Selim, Shakhawat Hossain Ziad, Abdullah Al Mamun Nasim, Hafez Ali Akbar Riaz, Shafiullah Shahi...

PM to speak at Saturday seminar for journalists
2008-01-26 03:31:00
CJITL – Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão will be the featured guest at an open seminar and discussion for journalists on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Fundasaun Oriente. The hour-long event, sponsored by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), begins at 10.30 a.m. at the center, which is next to City Café on the Avenue Presidente N. Lobato. The prime minister last week expressed dissatisfaction with Timor-Leste journalists, and has been invited to clarify and expand remarks he made about the country’s media. At a press conference at the Ministry of Social and Solidarity reported by the Timor Post on Jan.16, Gusmão said careless or irresponsible reporting could exacerbate social tensions in the country. “If instability emerges in Timor -Leste, we will arrest the press,” he said then. Francez Suni is the coordinator of ICFJ’s Special Projects Team, which organized the event. Suni said all journalists and organizations interested in press issues are invited to participate ...
