Juan Pierre Not Happy Being A Bench Player
2008-05-03 18:41:00 Juan Pierre, who has been the odd man out in the crowded Dodgers outfield this year, said following the team's 5-3 victory over the Florida Marlins on Thursday that he still has not accepted his current role with the club as a bench player: "I don't see myself as a bench player. I haven't accepted that. I know if they don't want me to play out there, that's their decision. But I don't see myself as a bench player." One reporter asked Pierre if he wanted to remain with the Dodgers to which the 30-year old responded: "I'm not going to answer that one. It is what it is. I'm not going to touch that one." Pierre is currently behind young outfielders Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier, along with offseason acquisition Andruw Jones, in the Dodgers' depth chart. His deal is guaranteed for four more years including 2008 (at a combined $36.5MM) with a limited no-trade clause. One difficult aspect of this situation is that Pierre is essentially still the same player he always was ...

Juan Pierre
2008-03-31 19:58:00 Much to joy of all those invested in hatin' Juan Pierre, he has been made a key 4th OF by manager Joe Torre. Here is someone who is very close to our own raygu during Rob Neyer's marathon chat today. (Neyer is chatting from Justin Verlander's 1st pitch to Dave DeJesus through the final out thrown by either Trevor Hoffman or Jose valverde.) Ray, Burlington, NJ: Rob-thanks for the marathon chat today. Now that Torre has made the right decision to play Ethier in LF, how many extra wins will LA get from this decision? Can they now win the West without the 500-out Pierre in the lineup? Rob Neyer: (1:19 PM ET ) Honestly? It's maybe a couple of wins over the course of six months. I know I've been hammering on this all spring, and two wins is significant. But Pierre's an outstanding baserunner and Ethier's really not a great hitter, and the difference between their overall value is not huge. But you have to take the wins where you can find them. And these are easy to fin...

Odds & Ends: Houston Astros, Juan Pierre and Josh Fields
2008-02-24 20:05:00 John Perrotto writes a must-read Sunday column for Baseball Prospectus called Every Given Sunday. The column typically hits on a few happenings in baseball and then follows-up with AL & NL rumors and grumblings. The column is reminiscent of those pre-interent Sunday columns begun by Peter Gammons at the Boston Globe and readily copied by major newspapers everywhere. This week, there are many bits of info that fantasy players can put to use. Unfortunately, the column is behind BP's subscriber wall so I will only a few tidbits along with a quick fantasy analysis. The Astros plan on running more this season.Fantasy Impact: Kick Michael Bourn upwards a round or two. Those around the Dodgers believe it will be Kemp and Ethier platooning in RF to begin the season.Fantasy Impact: Juan Pierre is going to be a "sleeper" in this year's drafts as no one wants to believe that Pierre gets another 600+ ABs. Expect Joe Crede to be dealt as manager Ozzie Guillen...

Who Should Trade For Juan Pierre?
2008-02-19 17:50:00 The Los Angeles Times reports Juan Pierre is willing to expand the number of teams his partial no-trade clause effects if the Dodgers want to trade him. Given the four years and $36.5MM remaining on his contract, there aren't likely to be many takers at that price. Despite that condition, I decided to try and find a fit. What I focused on was the fact Pierre puts the ball in play in 90% of his ABs. (Side note, Pierre has walked more times in his career than he has struck out - 291 v. 288 in 4,778 ABs) and the worst fielding teams in the majors in 2007 based on Baseball Prospectus' Defense Efficiency. My reasoning behind looking at the worst fielding teams was to find the worst fielding divisions in baseball to take advantage of the unbalanced schedule. If a team can be located within a generally poor-fielding division, then the team acquiring Pierre can maximize its chances of taking advantage of Pierre's best hitting skill - putting the ball-in-play...

Rangers Rumors: Guardado, Cameron, Hamilton
2007-12-21 22:16:00 MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has all the latest hot stove buzz around the Rangers. The Rangers are nearing a deal with Eddie Guardado. Everyday Eddie might be a dark horse to close, if he can flash his late season form again. The Reds decided in October that he was not worth $3.5MM, and declined his option. Guardado is 37. The Rangers hope to add some kind of veteran starter. Bartolo Colon and Jason Jennings are still options, but Mark Prior and Freddy Garcia pretty much are not. Sullivan names Mike Maroth, Mark Hendrickson, and Josh Towers as pitchers of interest. Mike Cameron could be an option for center field if he'll take a one-year deal. A multiyear demand would also take the Rangers out of the running for Corey Patterson. Sullivan notes that the Reds want Edinson Volzquez for Josh Hamilton, a possibility he first mentioned three weeks ago. Jamey Newberg doesn't think Volquez would cut it. Other trade options could include Andre Et...

He Said, He Said
2007-12-08 06:07:00 I'm not here to criticize the Andruw Jones signing. $18.1 per may be a little pricey, but that seems to be what decent center fielders are going for these days, and it's only for two years. I do agree with Keith Law when he says that it could end up being a mistake if it's a prelude to a Kemp trade and a starting role for Juan Pierre. But I digress; what I'd really like to talk to you about today is the continuing presence of Bill Plaschke at the Los Angeles Times. What's up with that?Folks will complain because Jones, 30, is coming off the worst full season of his career, but every question has an answer. You say he had a bad summer? I say he still would have led the Dodgers in home runs (26) and runs batted in (94).I say RBI are lineup-dependent and tell us very little about Jones' performance. I also say that he hit .222/.311/.413. He may have hit more homers than anyone on the Dodgers, but if we're only considering offense, would you really have taken him over Russ Martin,...
Rangers Like Patterson, Ethier, Hamilton, Fukudome
2007-12-08 03:38:00 According to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan, the Rangers are targeting various young outfielders. Corey Patterson, 28, is a free agent and Scott Boras client. He's looking for multiple years while the Rangers only want to give one. His talent might tantalize somebody, though he hit just .269/.304/.386 this year. He's shown in the past that he can hit like a league average CF and play plus defense, so he could be a bargain. Patterson reversed his platoon split this year, hitting lefties pretty well. He's an Atlanta native; maybe the Braves would be a match. Andre Ethier, 26 in April, is expendable now that the Dodgers have four outfielders. His career line of .295/.357/.464 is solid, though that is average for an AL right fielder. The Dodgers may opt to move Juan Pierre instead, if they can find a taker. The Dodgers previously had interest in Rangers reliever Joaquin Benoit, according to Sullivan. The Rangers would have competition f...

State Of The Dodgers
2007-10-10 23:07:00 The L.A. Daily News' Tony Jackson has a look at the Dodgers' upcoming offseason. You also might be interested in my recent Needs and Luxuries post on the team. A summary of Jackson's column: Juan Pierre could be shifted to left field to allow the Dodgers to employ a stronger arm in center field. It's odd...teams seem to be souring on last winter's signings even when they received exactly what everyone expected (Pierre and Jason Marquis, for example). It'd be different for the Red Sox to sour on J.D. Drew, he played well below expectations in Year 1. Anyway, Pierre could be moved to accomodate Matt Kemp (perhaps putting Andre Ethier in right), or the Dodgers could pursue a center fielder. They've already been connected to Andruw Jones. The Dodgers perceive third base as a big hole, apparently not willing to give Andy LaRoche another look. Of course we have to mention Alex Rodriguez. But how about Mike Lowell? The Dodgers will pas...

Juan Pierre Redux
2007-05-29 19:00:00 It was assumed by many that Juan Pierre’s offense would dip further into the realms of awful when he signed with the Dodgers, but this beats even my negative expectations. Pierre is hitting .274/.307/.307 on the season, a 614 OPS. To put that into perspective, there are five players with slugging percentages higher than Pierre’s OPS. His Isolated Power figure of .033 is the 37th worst with at least 225 plate appearances in the past twenty-five seasons. What surprises me is how Pierre has come to this line. He is hitting fewer groundballs than normal; in fact, he’s almost 10% below his average groundball rate from 2002-2006, and down 7.7% from last year’s 55.2%. Groundballs are the key to Pierre’s success; that’s how he gets his infield hits, which keeps his batting average up. Pierre is hitting more flyballs than he normally does in his career, which does two things: first, it generates an image of Willie Mays Hayes in my head, which is always a g...
