2008-06-06 08:15:00 Shreveport,LA,USA KTBS 3 News Caddo Parish judges Michael Walker and Vernon Claville, convicted over the weekend on corruption charges, will retire effective July 2.Authorities also have moved both men to federal prisons while they await sentencing: Walker to the correctional center at Texarkana and Claville to a prison in Seagoville, Texas, just outside Dallas.Walker, 58, and Claville, 57, were convicted this past weekend of taking bribes in return for judicial favors. U.S. District Judge Maurice Hicks ordered them jailed immediately after the verdict was returned. They will be sentenced in September.Federal prosecutors had asked the judge to keep Walker and Claville in jail pending sentencing on Sept. 4. Walker, a Caddo District Court judge who presided over drug cases, and Claville, a juvenile court judge, both face up to 20 years in prison.An attorney for the judges has submitted retirement letters to the state. Malaysia ex-judge denies link to judicial scandal
2008-01-29 08:39:00 KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's former chief judge, a central figure in an inquiry into a judicial scandal, denied on Monday that he had phoned a politically well-connected lawyer and discussed appointments of top judges. The scandal broke in September after the opposition leaked a video-recording of a phone conversation, allegedly between the lawyer and the judge. It reopened debate on the independence of the judiciary, though the video's veracity remains contentious. Former Chief Justice Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim told the inquiry he had never spoken on the phone with the lawyer, who was apparently videotaped speaking on his mobile phone in December 2001, bragging of his ability to influence appointments. Witnesses say the video was recorded at the lawyer's home by one of his dinner guests.
