Justin Verlander And Fake Teams New Look
2008-05-09 03:30:00
Detroit Tigers' ace Justin Verlander took the hill against the most fearsome offense in the American League, the Boston Red Sox, and came out of it with no questions answered.  Six innings with five earned runs and ten runners allowed did nothing to quell the queasy feeling his fantasy owners have lived with all season. Is there anything wrong with him?  Nothing that has been reported.  If that is true, then he should bounce back and be the Top 10 pitcher everyone expected before the season started.  He would also be an excellent buy low player.  The question is what do you offer to his disgruntled owner? * Off topic:  Fake Teams will be moving to SBNation's new format overnight.  Once you become accustomed to the new look, you should find it much easier.  The biggest change based on the very few compliants I hear is the new word minimum for  posts previously called "diaries".  It will be just 75 down from 300.
Trendspotting: Brett Myers, Justin Verlander
2008-05-01 12:11:00
These two may seem like an odd pair - Myers is a converted closer while Verlander is one of baseball's young studs. Nonetheless, both have struggled this year. Are they buy-low candidates, or is it time to get out while you still have the chance? Brett Myers: Myers had a crazy season in 2007. He spent time in the rotation and bullpen, and struggled with arm problems from overuse. He returned to the rotation this year, and his past gave every indication he'd be successful there. He had 397 strikeouts combined in 2005 and 2006, along with an ERA of 3.81 (combined) and a two-year WHIP in the neighborhood of 1.25. So how to explain his struggles so far? His velocity has fallen from the mid-90s to the upper-80s. The Phillies are calling it a conditioning problem and saying he can build up arm strength between starts. I'm not convinced, but at the same time, there are many pitchers who succeed with upper-80s stuff. You're not going to get anything for Myers in a trade, but he's stil...
Have You Seen Justin Verlander?s Fastball?

With the great addition of pitch type and velocity numbers here on FanGraphs, as well as the proliferation of Pitch F/X data, we’ve seen some great analysis of pitchers and the potential causes for their success and failure. In particular, there has been a decent amount of discussion about Barry Zito and his loss ...
Can Justin Verlander Still Win The Cy Young?
2008-04-08 12:26:00
While listening to the Tigers' sixth straight loss to open the 2008 season, I was struck by the thought that my pre-season CY Young pick, Justin Verlander, was about to open year with two losses in this, his first CY young award-winning season.  That got me to thinking if Verlander's chances are doomed with an 0-2 record to dig out from under. Using Baseball Reference, I looked at the game logs of each of the past 94 Cy Young awarding winning seasons to see if Verlander would need a historic season to come back from an 0-2 hole to win the Cy Young.  Starting with Don Newcombe's inaugural Cy Young season in 1956, I began to think Verlander would need to set a precedent to win the award in 2008. Then I got to 1969.  Mike Cuellar won the award after begining the season at 0-2 (40 starts).  OK, Verlander would be the first to do it in 38 years!  That is history enough for the vast majority of people.  (Read those my age of younger). And that sense of alm...

Has Justin Verlander Turned the Corner?
2007-06-21 13:13:00
Fresh off his no-hitter there has been a lot of buzz around Verlander. I thought it might be interesting to take a look and see if he has become the stud that fantasy owners have hoped for.Right now it appears he is still a step short of stud status. His numbers as of today look to all the world like he is a top 5 or ten pitcher:8-2 2.90 ERA 1.16 WHIP 7.4 K/9IP.However he has been helped by a low hit rate of 27%. BaseballHQ has his xERA (expected ERA)at 3.83. The Hardball Times has his xFIP (his expected ERA independent of fielding) at an even more pessimistic 4.40. I think the record here indicates that he has been lucky so far.His skills are very solid but not at elite status, confirming the somewhat pessimistic view of the HQ and Hardball Times metrics: 7.4 K/9IP, 3.2 BB/9IP, 2.3 K/BB ratio. These numbers reveal that he still has a bit of an issue with his control. However he has shown very nice gains over his short career, driven by an increased strikeout rate:2005: 5.7 K/ 9IP 4...

Justin Verlander
2007-06-13 17:58:00
When I watched the highlights of Justin Verlander's no-hitter, the fantasy player in me said, "Sell high!"  After a few handfuls of seconds in contemplation, that reaction was about a year late. In June 2006 following consecutives starts against the Yanks and White Sox where he allowed 10 ER in 11 innings against two of the best the AL had to offer, Verlander still had a 3.35 ERA on the strength of his previous two months worth of work.   That would have been the perfect time to hear calls of selling high.  Fortunately, for those who bought or refused to sell, Verlander rolled off four consecutive wins and 8 out of 9 overall.  By time time that run finished, it was mid-August, and Verlander could be comfortably sold in a bail trade. After another few more minutes of thought, it is clear that Justin verlander is no longer a sell-high player, but one that is a buy-high one at all times.  The no-hitter only confirms that valuation.  I caution that his 200...

Brett Myers vs. Justin Verlander
2007-03-05 22:31:01
The most recent ADP report from Mock Draft Central (data included in my Fantasy Guide) shows Brett Myers being picked 105th on average and Justin Verlander averaging 106.91.  The two have been picked as early as 73rd in some drafts and as late as 136th.  Which player should you take? I find Myers to be the far better choice, projecting to earn perhaps twice as much as Verlander.  Start with the injury risk - Verlander topped his pro career high in IP last year by more than 70.  He's a huge red flag for an injury, while Myers has proven quite durable. Myers piles on the Ks, with 200 likely.  Verlander posted a middling K rate last year despite nasty stuff.  Even if it translates to strikeouts 200 doesn't seem likely. You can make arguments on either side about who has a better chance to win games.  Myers will make more starts, while Verlander has the better bullpen and perhaps defense (based on recent team BABIPs).  While Verlander has the h...
