2010-10-28 06:41:00 Let's see what the Royals have to offer mixed leagues in 2011... Billy Butler, 1B. Took a mild step back in power in his age 24 season. I don't see why Butler can't provide a .300-20-100 season next year, and...

2008-05-22 15:30:00 Last night marked the successful debut of Bartolo Colon for the Boston Red Sox as he picked up his first win of the season. Colon Looks Good in 6-3 Sox Win
2008-05-22 04:43:00 Bartolo Colon made his Boston Red Sox debut and went 5 innings and threw 74 pitches in what I’d say was a pretty good showing for a guy who hadn’t faced many major league hitters in the last two years. Colon was good enough to earn a victory for his efforts in the 6-3 win ...

Kansas City Royals Prospects Update
2008-05-04 18:03:00 In his weekly XM Radio show "Down On The Farm", John Sickels interviewed the Kansas City Royals Director of Player Development J.J. Picollo. I admit my fantasy radar didn't really spike on any players mentioned, but here is a synopsis of some of the players mentioned. First, Mr. Picollo's comments are listed. Then I provide a blurb from John Sickels' prospect book. CF Jose Duarte: Can play defense in majors right now. Needs to learn to bunt as a weapon OF Joe Dickerson: "Blue collar guy". Well-rounded. OF Derrick Robinson: Expect to drive more balls. Has improved his jumps on basepaths RHP Blake Wood: Has strikeout pitch with curveball. AA by mid-season. Mike Moustakas: Left Burlington after five days feeling better about him than when he arrived. Being pitched to like a "ten-year veteran". Not swinging and missing. RHP Edward Cegarra: Ahead of other 19-year-olds with fastball command. Can use breaking ball and ch...

2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Kansas City Royals

Kuroda Remains Undecided
2007-12-15 04:50:00 After all the ruckus about Hiroki Kuroda earlier this week, his agent said today that he still has not reached a decision. The decision is "very close," and may come by the end of the weekend. The Mariners, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Royals have offers out. No word yet on whether the D'Backs will pull their offer after snagging Dan Haren. I know they're going with the three-year payroll plan, so they can probably still fit Kuroda in. showad();

Royals Acquire Alberto Callaspo
2007-12-14 20:47:00 Interesting move today, as the Royals sent 24 year-old minor league starter Billy Buckner to the Diamondbacks for 24 year-old second baseman Alberto Callaspo. Buckner, a labrum surgery survivor, has a plus curveball according to Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein. Goldstein adds that he's able to get groundballs and projects as a fourth starter. Throw him in the NL, maybe he could even become a #3. Callaspo is one of the better second base prospects out there, but keep in mind that good prospects rarely come up at that position. He almost never whiffs, and plays strong defense. The high contact approach led to a .341 average in Triple A this year. That the D'Backs shipped him off could imply they want to sign Orlando Hudson long-term. Perhaps Callaspo's off-field indiscretions played into the decision. At any rate he's a nice addition for the Royals. showad();

Tales of the cutter: an analysis of Joakim Soria
2007-12-13 19:57:00 I don’t know any other major league pitcher who relies on his cut fastball to nearly the same extent as Mariano Rivera, but there are many pitchers who use a cutter to some degree. Most of them, like Josh Beckett, merely put a little “cut” on a fastball now and then, and it’s debatable whether to classify it as a separate pitch in their repertoire. Some of them, like Greg Maddux, throw both a cut fastball and another fastball as fairly distinct pitches. A few others, like our subject today, throw a single type of fastball that moves more like a cutter than it does like a traditional four-seamer. Do we also label this kind of a pitch a cut fastball? The cutter is second only, perhaps, to the slider in the flexibility of its definition. Almost every starting pitcher is said to throw a cutter by an obscure report somewhere. I’ve learned to discount these notional references, but I pay a lot more attention when the pitcher himself or his catcher says he thr...

Royals Still Want Kuroda; Could Turn To Silva
2007-12-12 05:42:00 Bob Dutton of the KC Star has the latest Royals buzz, as usual. The Royals are being aggressive trying to win an unlikely bid for Hiroki Kuroda. They might even send Trey Hillman to Japan to make a last-minute pitch. The Dodgers currently lead for Kuroda, who will decide from Japan rather than take a U.S. tour. Plan B for the Royals is said to be Carlos Silva, but not at a price higher than four years and $40MM. That probably won't cut it for Silva, who can probably get an additional $10MM or another year elsewhere. showad();

Kosuke Fukudome Still Deciding
2007-12-08 03:10:00 UPDATE, 12-7-07 at 8:08pm: Just listened to Dave Kaplan talking to Fukudome's agent, Joe Urbon, on Sports Central/WGN 720. Urbon says Fukudome may decide whether to play in the U.S. on Monday. The process would move "very quickly" soon after that for Fukudome to decide on a team. UPDATE, 12-7-07 at 8:03pm: Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times spoke to Fukudome's agent. He hasn't decided yet. He will make a choice Monday or Tuesday, and would let the interested Japanese teams know first. FROM 12-7-07 at 2:40pm: In case there was any question, Ken Rosenthal reports that Kosuke Fukudome will announce that he's leaving Japan for an MLB team. Rosenthal says it's down to the Cubs, Padres, and what I like to call a Mystery Team. The Rangers, Giants, and White Sox are candidates. And although Rosenthal doesn't mention them, the Royals could be in the mix. Ken Davidoff reported on Wednesday that Fukudome had narrowed his choices...

Cubs Willing To Pay $12-15MM Per Year For Fukudome?
2007-12-07 02:41:00 UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 7:39pm: Sandy Alderson was on 1090 AM XX Sports Radio tonight. He said the Padres gave Fukudome one of the top two or three offers the team ever proposed. An answer from Fukudome is expected tonight or tomorrow. FROM 12-6-07 at 2:23pm: According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune, it "sounds like the Cubs might go as high as $12-15MM per year" for outfielder Kosuke Fukudome. He adds that Fukudome would have to be willing to take less money to play on the West Coast if he is to become a Padre. Many players have before, so don't go buying those Fukudome Cubs jerseys just yet. Krasovic also has a note on Andruw Jones. Apparently the only other concrete offer outside of the Dodgers was a two-year, $22MM one from the Royals. showad();

The Mahay Market
2007-12-06 00:27:00 UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 5:25pm: The Braves will at least have a discussion with Mahay as a courtesy. They won't sign him unless his price comes down. MLB.com's Mark Bowman says the Yankees are the frontrunner, in contrast to Sherman's note below. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 9:45am: Joel Sherman says the Yankees don't like the price for Mahay and are considering alternatives such as Damaso Marte or John Grabow. FROM 12-5-07 at 7:55am: According to Marc Lancaster, the Rays are "firmly in the mix" for popular 36 year-old lefty reliever Ron Mahay. Four other teams are involved - the Yankees, Royals, Giants, and Astros. I still haven't heard San Francisco's rationale to entertaining a three-year, $12MM pact for a 36 year-old reliever. The Royals being in the mix is a tad perplexing as well. showad();

By that, Carroll means Fukudome will sign today. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 1:17pm: Jon Heyman suggests the Red Sox could get involved on Fukudome. Where to put him? FROM 12-5-07 at 8:43am: Let's start a thread just for Kosuke Fukudome. The prevailing sentiment is that the Cubs are the frontrunners for his services.
