Federal-B-Area, Karachi
2009-03-26 04:19:00
Owais MughalThis is the fourth part of our series on best planned neighborhoods of Pakistan. We have so far covered Eight bazaars of Faisalabad, North Nazimabad, Karachi and Model Town, Lahore in this series. Today we are going back to Karachi and will give you an introduction of Federal-B-Area which is definitely among the best planned localities of Pakistan.Brief HistoryThe town planning of Federal-B-Area dates back to 1950s when Karachi was still the capital of Pakistan and many new neighborhoods were getting built up to house the employees of the Federal Governemnt. The present day neighborhoods of North Nazimabad, Federal Capital (FC) Area and Federal-B-Area were all part of this vision to give Karachi a well planned capital city infrastructure. While North Nazimabad was laid out by Italian town planners, I am unable to research who did the planning for Federal-B-Area. Reader?s help is sought here.Federal-B-Area, Mansoora and Gulberg TownOver the years Federal-B-Area has change...
Calling Karachi-ites
2009-02-28 07:43:00
Harbour city Karachi is famous as ?land of opportunities? in Pakistan. During my period of initial orientation ? tea used to be served for four annas per quarter cup then ? and continuous visits later; I have found Karachi is constantly reinventing itself. It is a land of superlatives: Pakistan?s biggest and one of the most prosperous cosmopolitan cities, home to universities and colleges, historic, cultural, and commercial centre. It has been a land of plenty for centuries. The history of Karachi, until its occupation by the Talpurs during late eightieth century (1795) is lost in the haze of past time. At the time of its annexation by the Talpurs, Karachi was a little more than a fishing village and the dominant tribes of fishermen were the Kulachis, hence the name.History has it that Karachi was ceded by the Kalhora rules to the Khan of Kalat in 1785 as a compensation for the death of Khan of Kalat?s brother in law. The Talpurs took back Karachi in 1795 after having overthrown the...

Merewether Tower, Karachi
2009-01-06 10:49:00
Owais MughalMerewether Tower, Karachi or as locals affectionately call it - the ?Tower? - is one of the most known, but arguably the least acknowledged landmarks of the city. It is most known because it is located at the confluence of two major roads of the city viz. I.I. Chundrigar Road (formerly Mc Leod Rd) and M.A. Jinnah Road (formerly Bandar Rd) therefore most of the city people have seen it. It is also one of the major terminus of city buses. All around the city one can hear bus-conductors shounting tower tower. Therefore even those who have not seen it; they have at least heard about it as echoing sound waves.Despite all the fame, it is least acknowledged in a sense that very few people actually take time to visit it or even look at it as an architectural heritage of Pakistan. Even lesser number of people know the history of it. For many people, it is just there since time unknown. The tower is named after General Sir William L. Merewether, who served as ?Commissioner-in-Scind...
Karachi Circular Railway: Revival Gets 1-Step Closer?
2008-10-04 10:29:00
Owais MughalThe ?Good?:A small news item appeared recently in Dawn which captured the imagination of quite a few people. The Central Development Working Party (CDWP), a constituent of Government of Pakistan, on September 17, 2008, approved 51 development projects and among them was also included the approval for Karachi Circular Railway. The ?Bad?:On September 23, 2008 another news made it to Dawn that put reality back to the forefront that project still needs approval of Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) and so far it is not even on their agenda to discuss.Despite this hurdle, I am still staying positive because this project was all but dead since 2006. Atleast we have now moved a step forward.and The ?Ugly?:Many of our readers may know the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) had been in operation since 1969 and got closed down in 1999 after running into huge losses. Numerous paper and political statements have been made since then for the revival of this proje...
The Best Planned Localities of Pakistan: North Nazimabad, Karachi
2008-06-28 05:55:00
Owais MughalIn April 2008, we had a post on Eight Bazaars of Faisalabad, and we presented it as one of the best examples of town planning in Pakistan. We would like to develop this topic into a whole new series about the best planned localities of Pakistan. Among many examples of fine town planning in Pakistan are North Nazimabad Karachi, Model Town Lahore, Faisalabad?s 8 bazaars, Federal-B-Area Karachi, Islamabad Master Plan, Wah Cantonment, and many more in other cities. In today?s post we will cover North Nazimabad, Karachi. The satellite image below shows North Nazimabad?s 20 residential blocks bound in red polygon. East of NN is Federal-B-Area where as North of NN is North Karachi and Buffer Zone.Whenever the aesthetics of Civil Engineering and Town Planning Projects is considered; it is an accpetable fact that curves and gradiants are considered more natural than squares or rectangles. Cities planned in rectangular grids, though easy to navigate, don?t have same aesthtics as br...

I was fortunate enough to witness the biggest launch of Microsoft and am proud to be a part of history. One of the things I like about such events is the goodies you get for just attending the event so this one was no exceptional: I got free copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and Evaluation copies of all the three newly launched products i.e. Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 & SQL Server 2008.   Here is a short video showing all the items contained in the launch kit (requires Microsoft Silverlight)   Additionally, pictures can also be seen here(Windows Live Spaces) or here(Flickr).
