KARBALA
2008-01-27 18:43:00 KarbalaOn 10 Muharram 61/10 October 680 in Karbala, near Kufa, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), Hussein b. Ali, was murdered along with the close male relatives who were accompanying him. Throughout Islamic history this event had an important effect on religious, political, social and cultural developments. In order to understand the events at Karbala it is necessary to examine some earlier developments. Shortly after the death of Hasan in 49/669, Muawiyah started efforts to ensure that his son Yazid was accepted by the people as heir apparent to the caliphate. After nearly five years, most of the people had accepted Yazid as the heir. The most serious opponent of Yazid's appointment as heir were the important names in the opposition in the Hijaz, Hussein b. Ali, Abdullah b. Zubeyr, Abdullah b. Omar and Abdurrahman b. Abu Bakr. These, as children of the first Muslims who had witnessed the time of Prophet Muhammad, were important personages in the era in which they lived.With...

Karbala – A Lesson For Mankind
2008-01-10 10:18:00 “The tyrant dies and his rule ends, the martyr dies and his rule begins.” — Soren Kierkegard The straight path or the right path is always the most difficult one to travel but one that rewards the most, and so we are told when young. This battle of good versus the evil is an age old phenomenon. Every religion has some story or the other to show us the ‘right’ path from the ‘wrong’ one. Hinduism celebrates the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura (among other stories) as Diwali, Christians remember the crucification of Jesus Christ as a supreme sacrifice in the way of God, and so do Muslims observe Moharram (the month in which the tragedy of Karbala took place) to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of Imam Husain, the grandson of the Prophet [PBUH]. “Think not of those who are slain in Allah’s way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord.”—Surah Aal-e-Imran (Chapter 3), Verse 169 The tragedy ...
Zakir Naik's comments on Battle of Karbala and Yazid
2007-12-23 14:59:00 The speech of Dr Zakir Naik during the Aman Conference organised by Islamic Research Foundation in Mumbai has truly been shocking. Regarding his opinion on the battle of Karbala, as 'just another fight for attaining political clout', I am not as astonished as I am with the use of the word 'Raziallah Anhu' with the name of Yazid. As we all know, the term 'Raziallah anhu' ie RH (or often Raziallahtala anahu) is used as suffix mostly with the name of either the companions of Prophet Muhammad or other leading figures in Islamic history as a mark of respect. It means, one whom God is pleased with. Though some scholars of a bit of standing here and there have held these views on the battle of Karbala, it is the use of this suffix (RH) with Yazid's name which is absolutely unacceptable to majority of Muslims. I have never listened to Zakir Naik's speeches for long. But this comment will surely damage his reputation. It is unthinkable to eulogize and glorify Yazid. Dozens of Musli...

Million pilgrims forced to leave because of fighting in Karbala
2007-08-28 23:25:00 Around one million pilgrims marking the birth of the last Shiite imam have been ordered by the Iraqi police to leave the city of Karbala. The reason behind this decision is the escalating violence between Al-Mahdi Army and the government security forces. The first in a series of gun battles started on Monday, but continued throughout the following day, prompting police to impose a citywide curfew. At least 52 people have been killed so far.Muqtada al-Sadrs Al-Mahdi Army is the biggest armed group in the country, and although its leader is in good relationship with the government, there were indications in the recent months that several senior ground commanders have started to operate independently. Some speculated that as much as one third of all Al-Mahdi Army members are outside of al-Sadrs direct control.Read more about the Karbala clashes in the Al Jazeera article.
