Timbooktu: A little bookstore in Katipunan
2007-10-20 07:23:00 If you take a right on the alley after the Ateneo-Miriam overpass, you'll find a modest little bookstore called Timbooktu. It's actually just a stall along with the other newly-set up stalls in that area (mostly composed of small restaurants and eateries). You won't miss it when you're walking from KFC going to Bo's Coffee.Timbooktu sells used/pre-owned books, much like the style in Filbars, which is located nearby. The book products aren't at rock bottom prices but they're pretty cheap if you consider that they're in good condition. They're even wrapped in plastic, just like new ones in big bookstores; you can, however, request the salesperson to open it up so you could see what's inside.Book subjects range from children's books, fiction, self-help, classics, and philosophy. There are some good novels also that you won't normally find in bookstores that sell pre-owned books.

Cinekatipunan screens Lav Diaz's Batang West Side
2006-12-27 11:18:01 CINEKATIPUNAN TO SCREEN LAV DIAZ EPIC - BATANG WESTSIDEWednesday, 27 December, 20062:00 -7:00 PMMag:net Café (fronting Miriam and Ateneo)www.magnet.com.phTHE AESTHETIC CHALLENGE OF BATANG WEST SIDE*Lav DiazBatang West Side is five hours long. For many this is an issue. A huge issue, and aheadache for many here in the Philippines. But not anissue if we remember that there are small and largecanvasses; brief ditties and lengthy arias; shortstories and multi-volume novels; the haiku and TheIliad. This should be the end of the argument. It?s too long, people can?t take it; it?s too heavy, people can?t handle it; distributors won?t pick it up,theaters won?t screen it. Wrong. There are theatersthat will accept this film. People will watch longfilms. I believe the masses have the ability totranscend the standards they normally use inapprehending the arts. Allow works of proportion andbeauty to exist, and we will develop an audience withphilosophies lofty and profound enough to properlyappreci...

Norberto Roldan's Oil at Mag:net Gallery Katipunan
2006-12-05 04:48:01 Norberto RoldanOilMag:net Gallery Katipunan2-16 December 2006Norberto Roldan mounts a major work in oil on canvas in a bid to blur distinction between his practice in advertising and visual arts as both graphic designer and multi-media artist. The attempt of using oil as medium in this new collection of mixed-media works is a conscious device to create a diversionary tactic from camouflaging the real issue the exhibition is confronting - Oil, the raison d?être of much of the economic and political conflict in the middle East and in contemporary world.Using found images from mass media, Norberto Roldan attempts to blur distinctions between art and propaganda, between painting and poster, and between public advocacy and personal ideology."Oil" by Norberto Roldan was launched last Saturday, December 2, 2006, at the Mag:net Gallery Katipunan. For details on Norberto Roldan's exhibit ("Oil"), visit www.magnet.com.ph
