Yankees pitcher Kei Igawa striving to make up for last season's wipeout
2008-02-19 00:00:00
TAMPA, Florida (AP) -- Kei Igawa's first season in American Major League Baseball was a bust. The New York Yankees left-hander hopes to make up for that this year.Igawa was projected to be the fourth or fifth starter in 2007 after signing a $20 million, five-year contact. The former Japanese Central League All-Star went 2-3 with a 6.25 ERA in 14 games, and wound up spending most of the season in the American minor leagues. After Saturday's workout, Igawa met for 30 minute ...

Likely End of the road for Mussina
2007-08-28 17:59:00
Likely End of the road for Mussina Mussina got bombed yet again, and sports radio all over NY is calling for his head. In a strange moment of clarity, I think the talking heads are actually right on this one. If Mussina?s out, who goes in? The Yankees are stocked in the minor leagues with some young quality arms and should really give one of them a shot in place of Mussina. Joba Chamberlain can go back into a starters role. A player we wrote about yesterday, Ian Kennedy (and his sub 2.00 era) is deserving of a major league tryout. Kei Igawa has been solid in his recent milb stint, although he?s still giving up the long ball. Hell, even Ben Kozlowski would be a better option at this point. I think the main question is, at what point does Torre ?man up? to a veteran and sit him down (move him to the pen) for the good of the club. Mussina has had a great career & at times this season has been very productive. He?s probably not doing himself any favors in the upcoming free agent ...
Yanks, Padres Fail To Reach Igawa Deal
2007-08-14 22:10:00
Disappointing lefty Kei Igawa will not be traded this season.  According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Yankees chose not to dump Igawa's contract on the Padres, and the two sides couldn't reach an agreement via trade.  The Padres had won the claim on Igawa, which shows just how little interest there was around baseball. As I mentioned a couple days ago, the Yankees don't really have an opening for Igawa in 2008 if all goes according to plan.  Many teams have shown past interest in Igawa, including the Orioles, Mariners, Padres, D'Backs, Dodgers, Mets, Cubs, Braves, Tigers, and Indians.  Igawa had expressed a desire to pitch on the West Coast. var random_number = Math.random(); if (random_number
Rosenthal's Latest: Possible Waiver Deals
2007-08-13 06:45:00
Ken Rosenthal has a new post up; below are some points of interest for rumor-hounds like us.  Josh Towers and Steve Trachsel have both cleared waivers.  You'll find their contract info as well as a complete list of those who have cleared waivers here.  Rosenthal says the Rockies are monitoring both pitchers; they were forced to start journeyman Tim Harikkala today.  The Rox also called the A's about Chad Gaudin but found the price prohibitive.  Another reason a Gaudin trade wouldn't make sense is that he wouldn't pass through waivers.  Towers is attracting multiple suitors.  I think he'll have moderate success in the NL as a #4 starter. Mark Loretta and Mike Lamb were both claimed on waivers and then pulled back, so they're not going anywhere.  The Yankees have no reason to throw down a chunk of change on a free agent starter this winter.  They're all set for 2008 with a formidable rotation of Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, Chie...
Padres Awarded Claim On Kei Igawa
2007-08-11 00:11:00
The Padres were awarded a waiver claim on Kei Igawa today, a pitcher they pursued in the offseason.  A healthy dose of a National League pitcher's park may be just what Igawa needs.  As Ken Rosenthal notes, all AL teams as well as clubs like the Dodgers, Rockies, Cardinals, Cubs, Phillies, and Braves passed on Igawa.  I'm surprised the Mariners passed, also. The Yankees and Padres now have 48 hours to work out a trade.  The Yankees could just dump the contract on the Padres, but it's really not that bad since the posting fee is a sunk cost.  Igawa gets $4MM annually through 2011, which is really cheap if he can be even league average. var random_number = Math.random(); if (random_number
I've Had Quite Enough of Your Lip
2007-08-05 23:46:00
If you had asked for my opinion yesterday, I would have told you that Mike Lupica's "Shooting from the Lip" column in the NY Daily News should be one of the last destinations for any sports fan in search of informative, impartial analysis (nobody asked). But his latest offering only confirms my earlier assessment. Without further adieu, let the shootout begin:Roger Clemens has started the same number of games and made the same number of appearances this season as Kei Igawa. To this point Clemens has one more victory than Igawa to show for all that. Look on the bright side, though. At least the Yankees haven't had to farm The Rocket back out yet.And why is that, exactly? If Clemens has only one win more than Igawa, and Igawa has been demoted to the minor leagues for the second time this season, shouldn't Clemens be knocking on Scranton's door himself? Could it be because judging a pitcher solely by his win-loss record is idiotic? Clemens' 4.23 ERA isn't setting any records, but...
Padres Interested In Igawa, Lamb, Loretta
2007-07-31 21:39:00
UPDATE: Will Carroll reports that the Padres appear to be close to a deal for both Lamb and Loretta.  Not sure if the Ensberg acquisition changes this. I'm not sure when it was published, but Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the Padres have interest in Mark Loretta or Mike Lamb from the Astros.  That we knew, but Krasovic also mentions that the Padres would like to buy low on Kei Igawa but the Yankees aren't shopping him.
Madden Takes On Mike Pagliarulo
2007-07-30 02:17:00
Bill Madden of the New York Daily News illustrates an interesting discrepancy regarding some harsh criticism of Brian Cashman.  Mike Pagliarulo, former player and co-founder of a scouting company, has a pretty cool website called The BaseLine Report where he dishes scouting knowledge.  His company often gathers intelligence on Japanese players and consults for many teams. Pagliarulo put up this MySpace post a few weeks ago, giving Brian Cashman a D- grade and calling him one of the worst GMs in the game.  He compares the Kei Igawa signing to the Mike Hampton contract.  Huh?  Madden quotes Pagliarulo as writing, "The Yankees chose not to use (Cashman's) Japan consultants, who told him to walk away from Igawa."  That's Pagliarulo's way of saying Cashman ignored his sound advice against signing Igawa. However, that sentence has apparently been removed from the blog post since Madden revealed that Pagliarulo's actual report to Cashman was fai...
Mariners Considering Kei Igawa, Al Reyes, Jason Jennings?
2007-07-28 17:08:00
Apparently the Mariners have some interest in twice-demoted Yankees starter Kei Igawa, according to an uncited TV report.  The report pleased Ichiro Suzuki and Kenji Johjima. Igawa is locked up through 2011, which may or may not be a positive.  He earns another $1.5MM this year plus $4MM annually through the end of the contract.  The posting fee situation ensures that Igawa's salary is  really cheap, the price a team might pay for a semi-utility guy like Mark DeRosa.  If Igawa can be league average in the comfy confines of Safeco, he's a bargain.  More likely he'd have value to an NL team.  The Mariners were in on Igawa this offseason, along with the Padres, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Braves, Mets, Cubs, Tigers, and Indians.  Igawa was said to prefer playing on the West Coast.  The 28 year-old had a decent strikeout rate but has otherwise been rocked in 62 innings as a Yankee. Meanwhile Dan Graziano says the Mariners are entertaining prac...
Hideki Irabu & Kei Igawa
2007-07-27 21:12:00
What do Hideki Irabu and Kei Igawa have in common? They have both been busts from Japan for the New York Yankees. Way back in 1997, the San Diego Padres purchased the contract of Irabu was from his team in Japan, the Chiba Lotte Marines. Irabu declined to play for the Padres and said he only ...
Kei Igawa should be converted into a reliever
2007-07-19 01:51:00
The Yankees need to cash in on this enigma of a pitcher somehow, and trading him really is not an option, considering nobody would actually want him. With the Yankees bullpen struggling, perhaps converting the Japanese hurler into a reliever may make him a more effective pitcher altogether. The
Kei Igawa

Wow! Jon Garland, the darling of the south side, is making Kei Igawa’s start against the RED HOT Twinkies look Johan Santana-esque! Ron Shandler had good things to say about Igawa’s last start, and the upside that could be drawn from his recent strong progress coming back from his demotion to the minors. If it were the stock market, Shandler would rate Igawa as a strong hold. Scattering no homers, 5 ER’s and only 7 hits in 5 innings is starting to look like all pitchers can do to avoid a shelling similar to what Garland endured today - 3.1 IP’s 12 H’s 11 ER’s 3 BB’s. The game is still going - it’s 20-10 Twins in the bottom of the 8th. WOW!
Kei Igawa update
2007-05-17 17:11:00
Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times contributed this comment to me regarding Kei Igawa, “My understanding is that he is there to work with coaches for a while, not necessarily pitch in games, at least initially.” While writing for the St. Petersburg Times, Marc also writes for an inside Devil Rays baseball blog called, The Heater.
Kei Igawa is MIA!
2007-05-17 16:39:00
On May 7th Kei Igawa was optioned to Single-A Tampa. Ten days later, he still hasn’t thrown a pitch for the Tampa Yankees. This is concerning. I’ve emailed a couple reporters in Tampa trying to get some news. We’ll see what comes back, and I’ll post their responses.
Kei Igawa
2007-04-26 04:33:00
While taking the 7:40 out of New York City, I listened to a recorded version of Fantasy Focus on XM 175.  Jeff Erickson's guest was fantasy baseball celebrity Sam Walker, the author of Fantasyland.  The conversation turned to Kei Igawa and some ribbing about having him on your fantasy team.   This brought to mind a trade offer I recently received with Igawa in it.  I didn't follow-up on the offer because I just don't like what I've seen of the Yankees $46MM man. I've had the opportunity to see portions of Igawa's starts, and I'm not impressed.  He seems so hittable.  With a BAA of .279, I can't even cling to the delusion that he has been unlucky. Am I missing something?  Does someone have a different impression?
Kei Igawa: Not as good as Matsuzaka, but way cooler
2007-03-30 00:14:00
As a Mets fan, I've had a crisis lately over Kei Igawa. Sure theres the pitching side, where various projections and people have pegged him as likely to have a #3/#4 starter upside, which would fit in well with the Mets, especially with how he was relatively cheap in comparison to Matsuzaka. But
Kei Igawa: Racking Up K's, Struggling With Control
2007-03-18 16:32:00
Kei Igawa, the 27-year-old Yankee pitcher from Japan, worked in and out of trouble on Thursday night in a 3-2 victory over the Braves at Legends Field. He pitched three scoreless innings but had trouble staying in the strike zone. The wild is that Igawa is not always able to stay in the strike zone. He walked four in three innings and threw 62 pitches (29 strikes). The effective is that when he does stay in the strike zone, he makes batters miss. Igawa, who fanned five on Thursday night, has struck out 12 and walked seven in seven innings in three starts. He has allowed eight hits.Igawa and Carl Pavano still are expected to fill the final two spots in the Yankees' rotation behind Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte and Chien-Ming Wang. Jeff Karstens (nine scoreless innings) is competing well for a spot, though, and Igawa and Pavano must give the Yankees reason to put them on the team beyond their contracts. Karstens could make the club as a long reliever.Source: Newsday.com
Kei Igawa Roughed Up
2007-03-07 10:46:01
Kei Igawa's Grapefruit League debut was a rocky one on Monday, as the Japanese left-hander surrendered two earned runs on two hits and three walks in one-plus inning of work against Detroit. Despite his lack of commend, Igawa said his performance was about on par with where he usually is during preseason workouts in Japan, with his pitches sailing too high in the strike zone. "The result was not good," Igawa said through an interpreter, "but it was something I can learn from and move forward." Chalk up the rough debut to jitters, and give the 27-year-old southpaw a few more spring starts before assessing his big-league potential. Source: MLB.com
Kei Igawa - New York Yankees
2006-12-01 01:48:09
Kei Igawa    Who is Kei Igawa and why did the New York Yankees bid $25 million for the rights to talk to him?     Igawa is seen by many to be a lower cost/lower reward version of Daisuke Matsuzaka. He throws a fastball in the low to mid 90?s and has been a high strikeout pitcher throughout his [...]
