Goverment Of Kerala Installs Webcams To Counter Corruption
2011-07-19 11:29:00 In an unprecedented move, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has installed webcams in his chamber and office which webcast the office proceedings 24/7 live. He is the first chief minister in the country to take such an initiative. His aim is to bring transparency in the government functioning. The live webcast is open to public viewing on the official website. The website has many other features such as videos, press releases, documents, cartoons, books, etc. People can even send a direct petition to the chief minister and track that petition. Citizen journalists can bring an issue raised by them on a blog to the CM’s notice. “Instead of taking action against corruption, I believe that we have to create an atmosphere where everything should be in a transparent way,” Mr. Chandy told New York Times. But, the live webcast lack transparency since it does not have audio feature. A series of corruption scams have been exposed in India in the recent past. But, the issue of corr...

Kerala
2010-07-06 17:00:00 Kerala is a fairly small state in the south-western corner of India, a narrow fertile strip of lush tropical land squeezed in between the Lakshadweep sea and the Cardamom Hills. It's unique among Indian states in that it has a literacy rate above 90% (as compared to the national average of 65%), is considered the least corrupt, has comparatively well functioning and publicly funded healthcare and educational systems, and is the only state where female feticides are uncommon with more females than males being born. Its illustrious backwaters, a labyrinthine of interconnected rivers, canals and lakes forming more than 900 km of waterways, lure thousands of tourists from around the world each year.

Kaalan - The Kerala Specialty
2008-11-03 06:00:00 Its been a while since I posted any Kerala recipes in here so I fished this out from my drafts. I make this quite often since this is one dish with coconut that TH doesn't mind too much. Not that I refrain from any other coconut-heavy Kerala dish 'cuz of his slight dislike :)Kaalan is a staple in any Kerala Sadya. The usual kaalan recipe has both elephant yam (chena) and raw bananas (pachakkai). I add only yam since that's more readily available here. Also, its important that the curd is slightly sour, otherwise the curry will taste a bit 'flat'. Adding a bit of tamarind might take care of this, I haven't tried that though.KaalanWhat I Used:Curd - 1.5 cups lightly beaten to remove lumps, best if slightly sourElephant yam (chena) - 1/2 cup, cubedCoconut - 1/2 cupPepper powder - 1/2 tspTurmeric powder - 1/4 tspGreen chillies - 2 to 3Fenugreek seeds (uluva) - 1/4 tspDried red chillies - 2Oil - 1 tbspMustard seeds - 1/2 tspCurry leaves - a fewHow I Made It:1. With monsoon, Kerala health resorts woo tourists with ayurveda
2008-06-02 07:28:00 &-nbsp; &n-bsp; &nb-sp; &nbs-p; With the monsoon rains descending on Kerala, creating just the right cool and balmy atmosphere, health resorts and clinics in the southern Indian state are ready with their ayurveda packages to pamper and heal tourists. The theory that monsoon is the best season for ayurveda rejuvenation programmes has been proved right because the atmosphere remains dust-free and moist, opening up the pores of the body and making it most receptive to herbal oils and therapy. &-nbsp; Another reason behind ayurveda's success in Kerala is the state's climate and the abundant supply of herbs and medicinal plants, vital ingredients for making the medicines. While the tariff is competitive among the resorts, the least one would have to cough up is around 40 to 60 euros for a day. &-nbsp; The m...
Country Kerala
2008-06-01 15:47:00 THERE are new ripples of interest on the beautiful backwaters of southern India, writes JOHN NEWTON &-nbsp; &n-bsp; ON a balmy evening enhanced by a blood-red sunset, there's hardly a ripple as Elegance flirts along the backwaters of the Kerala, a small state on the western coast of southern-most India. The panoramic backwaters of Kerala - meandering lakes networked by a maze of canals and rivers - stretch for hundreds of kilometres. Trips on large kettuvalloms (traditional country crafts over 20 metres) - many of which have been converted into luxury houseboats - are bringing international fame to the region, particularly Alappuzha, which has been dubbed the ``Venice of the East''. But there are no serenading gondoliers on the tranquil Alappuzha backwaters, nor are there any narrow, twisting canals such as those that surround the famous, historic seaport in north-east Italy. The Kerala backwater count...
