How to force a Linux kernel panic
2009-07-31 14:49:00 I received a funny request from a colleague today. He wanted to know if I can force a kernel panic on a Linux box. First question: Why? It turns out they are testing some component of VMWare that will be able to detect when a machine has panicked or stopped responding or something. Now, kernel panics are not an easy thing to initiate. The Linux kernel is reasonably strong and it should be able to handle most errors without any effort. The request was made though and I started trying to find an answer. Surprisingly enough, the answer was reasonably difficult to find. read more &raqu-o;

[benchmark] Ubuntu standard kernel vs. optimized vanilla kernel
2008-12-11 16:25:00 Come già vi avevo anticipato qualche tempo fa (cfr.

Designing BSD Rootkits An Introduction to Kernel Hacking
2008-05-04 17:35:00 Designing BSD Rootkits introduces the fundamentals of programming and developing rootkits under the FreeBSD operating system. In addition to explaining rootkits and rootkit writing, the book aims to inspire readers to explore the FreeBSD kernel and gain a better understanding of the kernel and the FreeBSD operating system itself. Unlike titles on exploit writing or how to gain root access to a system, Designing BSD Rootkits focuses on maintaining root access long after gaining access to a computer. Written in a friendly, accessible style and sprinkled with geek humor and pop culture references, the author favors a "learn by example" approach that assumes no prior kernel hacking experience.http://www.mediafire-.com/?fyzf1zgcidg

This week at LWN: ELC: Morton and Saxena on working with the kernel communi
2008-05-02 04:49:00 In many ways, Andrew Morton's keynote set the tone for this year's Embedded Linux Conference (ELC) by describing the ways that embedded companies and developers can work with the kernel community in a way that will be "mutually beneficial". Morton provided reasons, from a purely economic standpoint, why it makes sense for companies to get their code into the mainline kernel. He also provided concrete suggestions on how to make that happen. The theme of the conference seemed to be "working with the community" and Morton's speech provided an excellent example of how and why to do just that.

2008-04-26 08:10:00 "I've put together an automatic system for applying kernel security patches to the Linux kernel without rebooting it, and I wanted to share this system with the community in case others find it useful or interesting," said Jeff Arnold, announcing ksplice. He explained, "the system takes as input a kernel security patch (which can be a unified diff taken directly from Linus' GIT tree) and the source code corresponding to the running kernel, and it automatically creates a set of kernel modules to perform the update. The running kernel does not need to have been customized in advance in any way."

A Preview Of Kernel-Based Mode-Setting
2008-04-20 01:13:00 There are many new and innovative features brewing within the X.Org development community right now -- among the many are Gallium3D, the TTM memory manager, and MPX (Multi-Pointer X) -- but one of the features that has risen towards the top of the list and delivers visible benefits to the end-user is kernel-based mode-setting. As implied by its name, kernel mode-setting involves moving the mode-setting code for video adapters from the user-space X server drivers into the Linux kernel. This may seem like an uninteresting topic for end-users, but having the mode-setting done in the kernel allows for a cleaner and richer boot process, improved suspend and resume support, and more reliable VT switching (along with other advantages). Kernel mode-setting isn't yet in the mainline Linux kernel nor is the API for it frozen, but Fedora 9 shipping next month will be the first major distribution carrying this initial support. In this article we're looking more closely at kernel mode-setting ...

This week at LWN: Atomic context and kernel API design
2008-04-09 07:20:00 An API should refrain from making promises that it cannot keep. A recent episode involving the kernel's in_atomic() macro demonstrates how things can go wrong when a function does not really do what it appears to do. It is also a good excuse to look at an under-documented (but fundamental) aspect of kernel code design. Kernel code generally runs in one of two fundamental contexts. Process context reigns when the kernel is running directly on behalf of a (usually) user-space process; the code which implements system calls is one example. When the kernel is running in process context, it is allowed to go to sleep if necessary. But when the kernel is running in atomic context, things like sleeping are not allowed. Code which handles hardware and software interrupts is one obvious example of atomic context.

Debian Lenny: new kernel, new problem, plus the best distros for the Alps t
2008-03-29 16:04:00 The Linux kernel is a funny thing. A new kernel should mean increased functionality, but for me and my old-and-getting-older machines, I only seem to lose functionality with upgraded kernels. I hadn't updated Debian Lenny in a while on the $0 Laptop (the Gateway Solo 1450), and when I did it today, I noticed a new kernel being added to the system: 2.6.24-1. I didn't think about the new kernel when I next booted into Lenny, but when I did, I soon discovered that my sound card didn't work anymore. I looked at all the settings, tweaked a bit here and there, but still nothing.

Kernel Evolution
2008-02-19 16:19:00 "To quote you a number of years ago: 'Linux is evolution, not intelligent design'," noted Greg KH, quoting Linux creator Linus Torvalds. Linus expanded on the statement, "evolution often does odd (and 'suboptimal') things exactly because it does incremental changes that DO NOT BREAK at any point." He continued, "in other words, exactly *because* evolution requires 'bisectability' (any non-viable point in between is a dead end by definition) and does things incrementally, it doesn't do big flips." When alternative examples in evolution were pointed out, Linus suggested that the kernel was much simpler than a mammal and more similar to bacteria:..
