This news broke yesterday (props to rexob for letting us know about it in this diary): Kevin Everett is moving both hands. From the article: "Kevin Everett remains medically stable in the intensive care unit, and continues to make daily improvement in his neurological status," Bills doctor John Marzo said Monday in a statement released by the team. Marzo provided his evaluation after the player was examined Sunday evening by Bills orthopedic surgeon Andrew Cappuccino. "Kevin demonstrated increased strength in the muscles of his legs," Marzo said. "In addition, he was able to show some movement in both hands." After a bleak two weeks from the Bills, this news is extremely uplifting. What an incredible story - not only proving the mettle and determination of Kevin Everett, but showing just how far research and treatment of spinal cord injuries has come in recent years. From the Buffalo Rumblings community, our thoughts and prayers remain with Kevin and his family as he continu...

Kevin Everett: Keep Him in Your Intentions [J. Mark English]
2007-09-11 05:09:00
This is from the Buffalo Bills website:It was eagerly anticipated news when the Bills provided an update on Kevin Everett Monday afternoon, following his game halting spine injury on the second half kickoff of Sunday's loss to Denver. But the update only gave a clearer picture as to the severity of what is still a potentially lethal injury, and the steps that were taken to give him the greatest chance for recovery. Everett suffered a fracture dislocation between the third and fourth cervical vertebra. So there was an injury to the cervical spine and cervical spinal cord. But the spinal cord was intact. There was disc material pushing on the cord and bone was applying pressure as well. "The vertebrae were out of alignment," said team orthopedist Dr. Andrew Cappuccino, who specializes in injuries of the spine. "The vertebrae of the spine line up like box cars of a train. The third cervical vertebra had translocated completely over the front of the fourth cervical vertebra causing a...

UPDATE -- 11:16PM est -- According to ESPN.com's Chris Mortenson, Everett underwent 2 hours of surgery to stablize the injury. The doctors "felt good" about how the surgery went, though they won't know for 24-72 hours the full extent of the damage done. According to Mortenson -- Doctors in Buffalo have told members of the Bills that bone chips were removed during surgery. Everett is stabilized and is on a respirator in intensive care. At 9:45 p.m., as he was leaving Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital, Bills' tight end Ryan Neufeld told Buffalo's WIVB-TV the surgery "went well as far as we can tell and he's recovering right now." General manager Marv Levy said doctors informed the team that it's too early to determine the severity of the injury and that they will know more after monitoring the player overnight. "Certainly, we feel the injury is serious, but I don't want to speculate, and that's what the doctors told us," Levy told The Associated Press. "They told us t...
