Apology to Australian Aborigines
2008-02-13 09:46:00 I wanted to share this with my non Aussie readers. Our new Prime Minister apologised to our Aborigines today for the stolen generations. I have always felt sorry for them since I was a kid because of how we invaded their country and treated them, but only until a few years ago I never knew we were stealing their kids. It's not exactly something they taught you in school history lessons! What is worse is that, this is pretty recent, Aborigines my age and even younger were stolen from their families up until the mid 70's, I find that all very barbaric and disgusting. There was a touching movie called Rabbit-Proof Fence that I think everyone should see.Of course, this has been very controversial with our previous Prime Minister refusing to apologise. Frankly, I don't see the big deal, regardless of what this may mean compensation wise, what our previous governments and people involved did was wrong, very, very, wrong and we should say that to them, give them that validation for what ...

Wonder of Whales
2007-12-17 20:30:00 (Artist credit: David Miller)Captain Paul Watson, of the Sea Shepherd organization, sent a letter to Australia's Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd a few days ago. He basically ask if Mr. Rudd is going to keep his campaign promise to send the Navy out to track the Japan whaling activities. You can read it here: Act for the WhalesThat was dated December 12, 2007As of December 14th, it does appear that Australia will follow through and dispatch the Navy and Air Force to monitor the Japanese whalers. Excerpt: Aircraft are expected to follow the whaling fleet, which left Japan about a month ago. Evidence gathered is expected to be used in a legal fight with Japan's Government. Mr. Rudd states further details will be forthcoming next week. I like what this author has to say about the Japan Whaling: Japan, Whaling, and a World of Fools Excerpt: Japan and whaling appears the same as the US and oil. Both countries can?t seem to get enough of their respective commodities and make u...

Australian General Election - Is it all over for John Howard?
2007-11-24 09:26:00 It looks like it could be all over for John Howard and the Coalition. Exit polls carried out by Sky show that Howard will lose his seat in Bennelong, and predict a two-party preferred result of 53 per cent to Labor to 47 per cent to the Coalition. If the results match the exit poll, then Labor will have attained the swing of 5 per cent required to win an outright majority in the lower house of parliament. Casting his vote this morning, Labor leader Kevin Rudd said: "It's a tight and tough race ... I've been saying that all year. Nothing's changed. "I have to say there is a strong mood for change in Australia. People want new leadership with a positive plan for the future."Officials have begun to count votes and preliminary results are expected within a few hours. One other thing to note is that participating in elections is compulsory in Australia, and more than 13.5 million people are expected to vote. Should we have compulsory participation?UPDATE 09:30: 20% of the votes are in ...

Kevin Rudd Unmoved By Bush On Iraq Withdrawal
2007-08-31 19:16:00 Opposition Labor Leader Kevin Rudd has rebuffed US President George Bush's intervention in domestic politics by refusing to bend on the ALP's commitment to pull troops out of Iraq. In pointed remarks before his Australian visit, President Bush told reporters he would tell Mr. Rudd that an early withdrawal of Australian troops would be disastrous. Bush said the decision should be made on the basis of conditions on the ground, claiming there were strong signs the US was making headway. Bush said in an interview with journalists from the region, "I'm going to remind him that, one, the stakes in Iraq are very high for peace; that the liberation of a country (and) Iraqi-style democracy in the heart of the Middle East is part of winning this ideological struggle. And I'll remind him that, as far as I'm concerned, leaving Iraq before the job is done will cause an enemy that attacked us before to become emboldened." Mr. Rudd replied that he would not be moved on Labor's policy on Iraq...

Rudd Relieved as Tintin Banned in Australia
2007-07-18 22:49:00 Kevin Rudds pitch to liberal voters has been enhanced by a decision by Borders to ban Tintin in the Congo from public view. Rudd, very successfully cartooned as Tintin by Bill Leak in the Australian, staved off a Coalition attempt to brand him a rampaging racist, with an eye on environmental destruction. The books are now available in brown wrapping to discerning eligible voters looking for any reason to vote for John Howard. The cover of the book purportedly showing Kevin about to tour remote Aboriginal Communities was deemed too explosive in an election year. The Spokesman from the Labor Party said they had nothing to do with the decision.I was drawn to this story by an interesting article by Robert Sharp, himself a Tintin fan and his love hate relationship with some of the not so PC aspects of the storyline.Based on his writings, Tintin was about as progressive as my grandparents generation. Robert writes: I?ve read Tintin in the Congo, and it is indeed appalling. In addition to ... |
