Key West ,The Africans Buried at Higgs Beach and Zephanias Kingsly
2008-05-20 18:45:00 Key West , Florida. USA .- by Ray Fernandez A lot of you have been by the cemetery on Higgs Beach and have heard about the Africans buried there. Some said they died and were buried there in the name of historical truth these people were murdered, when you shackle someone hands and feet without food or medicine for months, they just don't happen to die, they are murdered for financial gain . Now that we got that out of the way we'll get on with the rest of the story. The life story of Zephaniah Kingsley (1765-1843), alleged smuggler, trainer and trader of slaves, more certainly Florida planter and man of affairs. One popular anecdote about Kingsley, often repeated and published at least twice, tells of the capture by a Coast Guard gunboat* of 350 Africans whom, so the story goes, Kingsley was attempting to land illegally the government after confiscating the human cargo could find no one capable of taking care of the Africans except Kingsley himself.Consequently, they were put in hi...

Escape the winter! Go to Key West!
2008-01-26 04:47:00 Many years ago, as I was still a kid, my parents along with my brother went on a series of trips down south during three consecutive winters. We just hopped in the good old Ford Elite on our first real family trip (it was a brown Ford Elite with a vinyl top, gosh! we rented a RV the following years) and we went from the province of Quebec, heading full south, down the east coast of the United States, and towards hotter temperatures...We made many stops: New-York, Boston, Atlantic city, Atlanta. We rolled all the way down until the sunshine state. Jacksonville, Daytona beach, Orlando, Miami and all the way to Key West. We stopped and rented a cabin for a whole week. It was a blast.Key West is unforgettable for it's sunsets. Seeing the big orange ball of fire sink in the waters is a spectacle itself. The place is not noisy and was a great choice of destination from my father. We simply experienced a perfect vacation. I strongly suggest visiting Key West to anyone who is looking for so...

Ultimate Road Trip, Florida Keys And Key West
2008-01-12 01:07:00 By Kenneth Ng This long line of islands, stretching south of Miami like an alligator’s tail, has long captivated visitors. And, just as you’d be careful while hiking through gator territory, exploring the Keys today demands a certain amount of caution. No, there are no real dangers (although the crass consumerism comes close), but there are real highs and real lows. And because the highs are so great - stunning tropical fish, unparalleled views of the sea, scrumptious dining adventures - it’s best to not waste any time with the lows of T-shirt shopping or cheesy-hotel stays. The 45-island chain, held together by a 1130-mile roadway, has a pace of life that becomes more mellow and island-like the further you get from Miami. Surroundings also turn more beautiful as you travel south, and your experience will peak in all ways as soon as you settle into the southernmost point in the lineup, Key West. But don’t make the mistake of flying by all that rest spots in b...

In fact, the island of Key West, Fla., the last of the Florida Keys stretching into the Gulf of Mexico, is closer to Cuba at 90 miles than Miami at 180 miles. Several major airlines have regular service to Key West, although schedules may vary according to season. Currently, six airlines service Key West airport: American Eagle, Continental Airlines, Delta Connection/ ComAir, United Express and US Airways. Most flights to Key West are routed through Miami International Airport, but you can find some direct flights from major cities in Florida and the Bahamas. Key West is approximately four miles long and 2 miles long, so the airport is close to all of the Key West attractions ? white sand beaches, historic houses and rambunctious nightlife ? that you came for. Impressions of Fantasy Fest in Key West
2007-10-27 18:14:00 There is a lot to see on Duval street!I'm posting here some OLD Fantasy Fest pictures - just in case if we will have some rain tonight, I will NOT be there! And the weather predictions are not that good.A lot of glitter costumes in the paradeA pretty "Bird of paradise"All the beautiful "ladies" in front of La-Te-DaHistory of Fantasy Fest in Key West First held in 1979, what began as primarily a gay party staged to add pep to the quiet days of October soon acquired a life of its own. Tony Falcone and the late Bill Conkle, owners of Fast Buck Freddie's Department Store, along with Joe Liska and Frank Romano, who owned Key West Aloe at the time, organized a party to stimulate business. The ten day celebration now includes balls, costume competitions, AIDS fundraisers, drag queen contests, costume parties, lots of drinking, as well as pet and neighborhood parades for the whole family. Fantasy Fest has grown to rival New Orleans' Mardi Gras as an event drawing out-of-towners. The hig...

View from the top to Hemingway's house and his wonderful gardenView to the East overlooking the AtlanticBuilt in 1847 to aid to ships navigating dangerous reefs off the lower Keys, the Key West Lighthouse now stands sentinel over one of Florida's finest historical sites. The tower was originally 46 feet high and powered by 15 oil lamps with 15-inch reflectors, but was extended to 86 feet in 1894. Inside visitors now climb 88 iron steps to the observation deck that affords spectacular views. The tower and nearby Keeper's Quarters have been faithfully restored and maintained as they were before the lighthouse was deactivated in 1969. Tattoo ink flows again in Key West
2007-08-24 09:42:00 In this almost-anything-goes tourist town where even the police consider body paint as clothing, sounds were coming from a Duval Street shop Wednesday that hadn't been heard within the city for 40 years: the buzz of a tattoo gun. Tattooing was banned in Key West in 1966, when a Navy commander decided the once-seedy activity was too accessible for drunken sailors. Among the first to take advantage of Key West Ink's opening: drag queen Inga the Swedish Bombshell.

Interesting Architecture of Key West
2007-07-12 18:17:00 The story of the "Two Sisters Houses" is interesting, because they were built by the father of two sisters who didn't like each other much. Today, the houses are priced in the Millions of Dollars. The "Artist House" on Eaton Street, built between 1890-98 was formerly the home of Painter Robert Eugene Otto and his wife, Anne, a concert and jazz pianist.I call it "The Yellow House". It is not really a famous house, just a nice and colorful one with a lovely, lush garden. The "Boca Casa" shows the typical gingerbread architecture of Key West houses. The "Southernmost House" is located near the Southernmost Point on the Atlantic side of Duval Street.

All the Roosters of Key West
2007-06-18 17:45:00 I spent a whole afternoon chasing all the roosters to get some shots of these animals who are totally dominating the streets of Key West. For all who don't know about the story behind the roosters here on this island: They used them for fights when the Cuban population came to Key West in the last century. Today they are wild, protected and grow and grow and grow....You will see them even at the cemetary picking for food and crowingI call this one "the dancing rooster"And as he saw me coming to close with my camera he run away, like running for his life. And don't disturb these two! They must have a very important, personal meeting together.

2007-06-10 14:56:00 How much was Clara down on this , $12,000.00 .How much was Clara out on this, not only the 7,000.00 but much more because the membrane, applied on the one day he did show up with some seemingly inebriated workers with smell of alcohol, and improperly installed the membrane that had to be redone at double the price, because of cost of having covered up rotten playwood that all had to be taken up now, in order to find and replace the rotten, plywood covering. The damage was closer to $12,000.00 in the cost of extra materials and labor. Key West Nursing Home - Gets Written Up!
2007-06-06 15:00:00 After 30 years in Key West, I am pleased to have found another great resource that we are fortunate to have. When it was apparent that my 93-year-old mother was unable to return to her Miami home, my wife and I toured the Key West Convalescent Center. From our first contact there we were impressed by a professional and capable staff. Now, after three months, I am an enthusiastic supporter of the convalescent center. Mom is very happy there and treated like the special person that she is. I am most impressed during my visits with the care provided for other residents as well. Throughout all the departments, from the director to the aides, there is an upbeat spirit of concern and professional caring for our dependent elderly. I have witnessed residents routinely being treated with patience, warmth and respect on a daily basis.Having visited my mother in two other ?good? facilities in Miami, I can attest that we are lucky to have a superior resource here in our hometown. I can also tell...
