2008-02-13 02:02:00 Just got thinking after seeing news that Kicker Laurence Tynes of the Giants is close to finalizing a long term deal with New York and the Buc's re-signed Martin Gramatica...what's in the future for our own David Akers?Now this really doesn't have to do much with a contract because currently Akers is under contract until 2010, but there is some curiosity as to his performance next season.Having been Mr. Reliable in the past, Akers had a rough season going going only 2 for 10 in field goals over 40 yards. Now out of those field goals upwards of 40 yards he nailed a 47 yarder in Week 1 against the Packers and a 53 yarder against the New York Giants 3 weeks later. Sander all over again, but don't doubt if the Green Bay Packers keep both Mason Crosby and Dave Rayner on the 53 man roster, at least for a little while.Teams in the NFL looking for a kicker know they'll be able to steal one once final roster cutdowns are made prior to the first regular season game.Don't expect the Packers to part with their kickers so easily. In it, Mr. Schatz makes a convincing argument that FG% on kicks greater than 40 yards is a meaningless metric in terms of predictive value. As a matter of statistical fact:...the year-to-year correlation of field goal percentage on kick of 40 yards or more is -.10. In other words, a kicker who is above average on longer field goals in one year is actually more likely to be below-average the following year. In demonstrating this application to real-life NFL decisions, Mr. Schatz hits upon two fantasy sleeper kickers, New England's Stephen Gostowski and New Orlean's Orlindo Mare.
