Kidney Stone Symptoms
2008-05-14 13:42:00 Most the kidney stones do present themselves with any symptoms. However, if the size of the stone is large, then it could lead to blockage in the urinary tract resulting in severe pain while passing urine. In such condition, the person may feel pain in the lower abdomen. He may feel nausea accompanied with vomiting.Sometimes Blood may be seen in the urine. This is because the stone will irritate the ureter and cause blood. However all the cases with blood in urine do not really indicate the presence of Kidney stones. Some other reasons may also cause blood spots in urine.Frequent and painful urination may also be a symptom of the presence of kidney stone. Many people feel stinging or burning sensations while passing urine. Tenderness in kidney, abdomen and Urinary tract infection may also be signs of kidney stones. If there is a foul smell along with pus in urine, then there is a strong indication that there is a stone present in the kidney. If all these symptoms and chills persist a...

TRAUMA TO THE KIDNEY
2008-05-08 09:53:00 Injury to the urinary tract may at times produce blood in the urine. This isparticularly a problem in contact sports, since the kidneys are easily traumatized.Long distance runners also frequently show signs of kidney damagewith elevated enzymes and blood in the urine. This may be related not only tothe metabolic breakdown of muscle during severe exercise, but also to thedehydration that results from profound sweating. In most cases of urinarytrauma where the urethra, bladder, or ureters have not been ruptured bed restcombined with hot packs and adequate fluid intake will produce a rapid cure.
KIDNEY FAILURE
2008-05-07 09:49:00 Failure of the kidneys to form urine properly can be either of an acute or chronic nature. The acute types are called nephritis, referring to the inflammation of the functional kidney complex. This may occur in conjunction with a Strep. throat or other bacterial infection. At times it develops suddenly, associated with protein loss, edema, and high blood pressure. These cases need to be evaluated with laboratory tests and medical expertise. But several simple approaches are helpful.First of all it is important to recognize the influence of diet on kidney function. Many years ago it was discovered that a high protein diet predisposes to kidney complications. For this reason it is wise to avoid an excess of animal products, particularly flesh foods. Adequate fluid intake isalso important. In treating these symptoms hot packs as well as hydration will be beneficial.Chronic failure of the kidneys frequently produces metabolic disturbances in water, sodium, potassium, calcium, and acid-b...

Understanding Dogs Diseases and Dog Kidney Diseases
2008-04-21 15:01:00 By Kelly MarshallDogs get sick from parasites, viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and fungus. In some cases, these diseases and infestations are fatal unless caught early and treated. Sometimes they sow the seeds of death or debilitation years down the road by causing chronic illness or damaging organs. The term "chronic kidney failure" suggests that the kidneys have quit working and are, therefore, not making urine. The typical form of chronic kidney failure is the result of aging; it is simply a "wearing out" process. The age of onset is related to the size of the dog. For most small dogs, the early signs occur at about 8-14 years of age. Large dogs have a shorter age span and may go into kidney failure as early as seven years of age.Causes of acute kidney disease? Trauma - Any type of trauma that causes the blood pressure to fall dramatically, such as shock and blood loss from being hit by a car.? Disease - Leptospirosis (a type of bacteria), fungal infections, heart disease? Poison - I...
World's First Six-way Kidney Transplant
2008-04-10 06:13:00 A medical team with more than 100 doctors have carried out the world's first simultaneous six-way kidney transplant at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland. On Tuesday, hospital officials announced this news. The transplants conducted Saturday were made possible when a so-called altruistic donor, who was willing to donate to anyone, was found to be a match for one of six transplant candidates. Five of the candidates had a willing donor whose kidney was incompatible with their particular friend or relative, but a match for another of the six.The 10-hour mass transplant required six operating rooms and nine surgical teams working on 12 patients. The surgery is performed simultaneously to ensure none of the donors backs out after their loved one has received a kidney.Robert Montgomery, head of the transplant center, said: "All 12 are doing great, the six transplanted kidneys are working well."

UK Kidney Cancer - Passport To Cancer Drugs
2008-04-03 16:26:00 I started my kidney cancer journey back in December 0f 2006, and it's a journey I wouldn't wish on others because real anxiety is hard to manage. For me I've been "lucky" I guess in that any turmoil on my part has been less physiological and more psychological. Yes I had a rather hideous radical nephrectomy back in March 2007, but there was far less pain than I'd anticipated, and I was far more concerned about the diagnosis of cancer than I was about any pain or dying on an operating table or being invalided in some way.And then I look at others who've been inflicted with this silent killer, others who have a tougher prognosis than me i.e. Metastatic Kidney Cancer, and I see how they are coping with it all. There are some amazing people out there is all I can say, their capacity to cope should be an inspiration to others, it certainly is to me. I look at some of the stories on ACOR and on Kidney Cancer Resource, and each time it stuns me how nonchalant folks can be about their ...

Kidney Cancer - What You May Not Know
2008-03-23 16:09:00 Kidney cancers are diagnosed in a million patients each year, though millions of people are affected by kidney cancer. Kidney cancer is twice as common in men and accounts for 40-60 % of new diagnoses. The most common form of kidney cancer is renal cell carcinoma, also known as RCC. It accounts for 66-75% of all cases. In most cases the cancer is found in only one kidney; though in some rare forms it can be in both. Kidney cancer spreads to the lymph nodes, bone, lungs and pelvic region. If cancer has spread to the brain some neurological symptoms will be present. RCC is responsible for 25-30,000 new cases each year.Symptoms of kidney cancers are sometimes ignored because they are generalized. Though kidney cancer is on the rise, many people are not diagnosed until the cancer is advanced due to low or no symptoms. Many of the symptoms are those of other less serious diseases and the cancer is not caught at an early stage. Current symptoms are: blood in urine (light to dark in appeara...

MEMS KIDNEY
2008-03-22 07:01:00 The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering awarded Shuvo Roy, Ph.D., a $3.2 million, three-year grant today to develop a bio-artificial kidney that can be used instead of dialysis.Dr. Roy and his team are using MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) technology to create an implantable, self-regulating bio-artificial kidney that will filter toxins and absorb necessary salts and water like human kidneys. The team includes physicians and engineers from the Lerner Research Institute‚s Department of Biomedical Engineering and Cleveland Clinic's Department of Nephrology."We are bringing together the necessary multidisciplinary expertise to focus on critical technical hurdles to develop an implantable hemofilter and cell bioreactor, which are the integral components of the bio-artificial kidney," Dr. Roy said.Martin Schreiber, M.D., Chairman of the Cleveland Clinic's Department of Nephrology and Hypertension, said the grant will help further one of Cleveland Clinic...

Surgeon Removes Healthy Kidney
2008-03-20 14:47:00 A surgeon in Minnesota left a cancerous kidney in a patient and instead removed a healthy one. The doctor has promised to stop practicing medicine after his horrible mistake was revealed a day later by pathology reports. Surgeons will now have to double check CAT scans and MRI's before beginning surgery. There is no word on how the patient is doing, or whether he will need a kidney transplant to survive. Most people can live with only one kidney, and now that his healthy one is gone, he might need such a transplant. Therefore, the doctor's mistake has affected not just one person, but perhaps two since that kidney could have gone to someone else. It is also interesting to consider the recourses this patient would be left with in Florida, where one size fits all medical malpractice claims would limit his recovery for his suffering due to this shocking mistake.

More suffering from end-stage kidney failure
2008-03-12 23:52:00 More suffering from end-stage kidney failure Number doubles to 1,084 in a decade; diabetes accounts for six in 10 cases By Salma Khalik, Health Correspondent MORE than 1,000 people here lost the use of their kidneys in 2006 and about 400 of them died within a year. The state-run Health Promotion Board (HPB) released these figures to commemorate World Kidney Day today, which aims to raise awareness of the dangers of kidney diseases. It said that 38 per cent of people on kidney dialysis die within the first year, compared to only 7 per cent of people who had transplants. Dr Lye Wai Choong, a renal physician in private practice, said that of the 38 per cent, many die within the first three months. Five years after they suffer from kidney failure, 89 per cent of those who received transplants are still alive, compared to 36 per cent of those on dialysis. In the past, those on dialysis would not live beyond seven years. But with better treatment, some now do. The figures from the...
