"Killing Fields" court adjourns bail hearing
2008-02-04 12:39:00 PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodia's U.N.-backed Khmer Rouge tribunal adjourned a bail hearing on Monday for "Brother Number Two" Nuon Chea after his Dutch lawyer failed to show up. Making his first court appearance since being charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity, the white-haired and toothless 82-year-old Nuon Chea, who was Pol Pot's right hand man, spoke only to ask that his request for bail be delayed. "Why are we having the hearing today since I have only one Cambodian lawyer and it is not consistent with international standards?" he asked the courtroom packed with nearly 500 people and reporters. "If the hearing goes ahead, I don't believe it will be fair to me," he said. An estimated 1.7 million people were executed or died of torture, disease or starvation under Pol Pot's 1975-79 reign of terror as his dream of creating an agrarian peasant utopia descended into the nightmare of the "Killing Fields". Nuon Chea is...

Stalllone threatens to expose Burma’s killing fields
2008-02-04 11:30:00 Hollywood superstar Sylvester Stallone is upset over the potential ban on his new film in Burma and has threatened to expose the country’s killing fields if the movie doesn’t hit theatres as planned. The Burmese authorities are said to be upset with the plot of the film, in which Stallone's character tackles the country's military in a mission to free a group of captured Christian aid workers. The 61-year-old actor is upset that his film might not reach fans following an official crackdown on the distribution of pirated copies of Rambo. "If the Burmese government has nothing to hide, I am wiling to go there and show the world where thousands of bodies of innocent women and children are buried,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying. "Let the generals look me in the eye and tell me they have a free country. It will never happen," he added. (ANI)

The Killing Fields
2007-12-03 22:00:00 I had the opportunity to watch The Killing Fields when it first came out in 1984 at MIT, with a Q&A session with Sydney Schanberg, but at the time was not up for a movie about genocide. I finally watched it on the plane last month. Unfortunately, I only had my new V-Moda Vibe Duo headphones and although they are "noise-isolating" they are not "noise-reducing" so I couldn't hear most of the dialog even with the laptop set at full volume (stupid Lenovo). I watched most of it without much dialog and could get the gist of the movie, but then I watched it again off the plane. Even without the dialog, it was extremely moving and the range of emotions was apparent, from fear to shock to hatred. Watching with the dialog definitely added another layer to the movie as there were many voiceovers that I had been unaware of. The interesting thing in the special features was a bio on the actor Dr. Haing S. Ngor. The DVD said:Born in Samrong Young, Cambodia, Ngor was a doctor (OB/GYN) engaged...

Hospitals or Killing Fields
2007-10-07 14:44:00 ?Hospitals or killing fields? and ?Battle between the doctors and the teachers? teaching ground for the resident doctors. But our doctors are forced to doing duties of 30 hours every third day, and the exhausted and tired among them some time fail to provide the expected care.Medical officers are being paid only for an eight-hour shift, attendance is also marked for one shift but they are forced to do 30 hours. All over Europe doctors? working hours have been converted to shift duties. In our case, in all teaching hospitals caesarean sections are being performed by the resident doctor without supervision of the senior registrar, and anesthesia is also administered by the resident medical officer. So in such a situation most cases are rather mishandled, with serious consequences for the patients. Also, cardiac patients arrive at irregular intervals, and the on-duty registrar and the resident doctor have to manage the patients. It is not possible for the consultant to visit one patient ...

UPDATE! Kerry On The Killing Fields...AGAIN!!
2007-08-09 09:51:00 UPDATE!!Well? It "IS" settled. John Kerry is actually dumber than a box of turtle turds. All that "D" education gone to waste. As brought to you previously in this post, here is the continuation...in full. I would LOVE to rant on but the ranting in the following is so much more eloquent. It berates and chastises in such a way that the one being ranted upon would thank the rantee...One more thing...when one quotes figures and facts, it isn't really a good idea to quote facts and figures compiled by our enemies...is it?Just curious.Answering Kerry--IIOur Monday item about John Kerry's Saturday letter about our July 26 op-ed about Kerry's claim that a bloodbath "didn't happen" after America's retreat from Vietnam brought this follow-up from reader R.T. Barber: I just got around to reading Kerry's attempt to extract himself from his latest verbal quagmire and was stunned at his statement that "450,000 civilians and 1.1 million soldiers were killed" in ...
Kerry On The Killing Fields...AGAIN!!
2007-08-06 23:22:00 This IDIOT needs to keep his #$@#&(&^$# mouth shut.Answering Kerry On Saturday The Wall Street Journal and this Web site published a letter to the editor from Sen. John Kerry, wherein he responded to the July 26 op-ed in which we took the senator to task for his statement: "We heard that argument over and over again about the bloodbath that would engulf the entire Southeast Asia, and it didn't happen."In typical Kerry fashion, he acknowledges in his letter that it did happen, but faults us for taking what he said at face value and ignoring his unspoken nuances. We thought about responding, but instead we decided to let you have the last word. What follows is the text of Kerry's letter, interspersed with rebuttals from OpinionJournal readers:Kerry: "James Taranto misinterpreted my words and misreads history (' "It Didn't Happen," ' July 26). I know the tragedy that followed a tragic war. John McCain and I led the effort to locate America...
A Dark Journey into the Killing Fields
2007-06-22 01:26:00 (photo: Phil Simpson) An extended excerpt from the superb (if chilling) Japanese documentary titled ‘Rest in Peace,’ which examines the horrendous crimes of Pol Pot’s regime, in its effort to construct an agrarian communist paradise. Khmer Cambodia was so oppressive, it even outlawed all history, declaring that the year of the revolution was year zero and nothing ...

The Killing Fields
2006-12-02 16:18:04 Normally I won't post political issues, today it's not one of those days. It's a sad day in history (AGAIN), those retard canadian wankers, with brains like an amoeba, are hunting seal babies AGAIN! Canada is one of those countries, who's products I'll never ever buy. If there is one thing I hate, it's people killing animals for pleasure or sports. When I say I hate them, I mean I really hate those fucking basterds (pardon my french). If I would met a guy (sadly, mostly are men) who was killing a helpless creature, I would send him to Kingdom Come on the spot! But before that I would hurt him so much, he would call for his mommy! But seriously, if there wasn't any demand for fur it would stop! Only clothing companies like Gucci, Versace and Prada create the demand. So the only thing I can say is: DON'T BUY FUR!!!
Killing fields - My visit to Phnom Penh, Kingdom of
2006-12-02 16:04:06 After my return from the recent trip to Phnom Penh in late June, I have been putting off blogging until last night when I was told that the day was the 15th day of the seven-month festival, a.k.a. the "Hungry Ghost Festival" here. In June, I have spent a week or so on a job assignment in Phnom Penh, capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia. Everything went smoothly as scheduled and I was fortunate to make time for visits to the central market, Russian market where imitation of many kinds can be had for a couple of dollars, the National Museum, Royal Palace and Tuol Sleng Museum, the infamous detention prison, torture and execution centre in the heart of the city. Tuol Sleng, S-21, the former high school is located in Tuol Svay Prey sub-district, south of Phnom Penh. We paid US$2 each for the entrance fee. BTW, the Cambodians use US dollars beside their currency, Riel. Thai baht is also welcome in supermarkets and shopping centres. Outside Tuol Sleng Museum, the scene is disheartening. Amp...
