Political Correctness Claims Another Victim: Kindergarten Thanksgiving Celebration Had Been Held for 40 Years “Racist” children celebrate Thanksgiving by “dehumanizing” American Indians In yet another case of political correctness run amok, a forty-year history of kindergarteners dressed as pilgrims and native Americans celebrating Thanksgiving at school has been quashed in Claremont, California, due to four people who complained ...
Kindergarten Testing
2008-09-18 17:54:00
Lily's school has thus far given her two standardized tests. One was administered by the school counsilor and Lily scored very high, way above average on her ability to read for a kindergartener. The other test was adminstered by her teacher and on that test Lily scored about average or even below average on her ability to read. The teacher wrote in the note that the kids were sat at a computer and had to listen to the computer asked questions and then respond. The school says that these tests are given in order to establish where the children are when they enter the school in order to monitor if they are improving. I guess to assess if the teacher is actually teaching the kids. In the first test there isn't a lot of room for improvement as she maxed out on the test. They were not testing if she could write her name, because she definetly could use some improvement on that. This was a test to see if she could read and she can read apparently very far above her grade level.T...
Get Ready for Kindergarten Giveaway
2008-08-30 10:00:00
Cedar Valley Publishing is a company started by Stacey Kannenburg, an educator, author, speaker and mom was looking for books and curriculum to prepare children for their educational careers. The result is Cedar Valley Publishing and the Let's Get Ready for Kindergarten series (which includes Let's Get Ready for First Grade) and the soon-to-be-released Spanish editions of both books. The books are a little different because they're in an easy-to-read storybook type format rather than a workbook where children can practice saying letters, numbers, identifying shapes and colors and other early learning skills. According to the website they've won multiple awards and are in use in 350 schools around the country. To quote Kannenburg:Thirty-eight states are discussing all day 4 year-old Kindergarten because kids are not coming to school prepared. But where are the public service announcements telling parents the 7 things they need to know for Kindergarten testing: the alphabet all ...

Do I tell the teacher that my child is brillant?
2008-08-20 18:00:00
I am just home between volunteering at Lily's school and driving Mandy to the orthodontist. My schedule seems to have gone from having nothing to do to having more to do than ever. I am having a great time.I am trying to not over volunteer at the school. I am trying to not volunteer to do anything that would put me in direct contact with Lily. I do have lunch with her sometimes. OK, more than sometimes. I find that I go there to the school for one reason or another nearly everyday.Yesterday I had to buy myself a new dress, a dress to wear to a wedding. I had such a great time. I was in no hurry. Later I had to go to the school for Kindergarten Curriculum night. The teacher explained in detail all that will happen in Kindergarten. Of course this is the same information we got the day before school started when we went to meet the teacher. It is also the same information which is sent home with Lily. It is a little frustration to get all this information so many times. At t...
First day of Kindergarten
2008-08-07 15:43:00
I am sitting here in my home all by myself, watching Matlock. Can't wait to find out who done it. Yesterday was Lily's first day of kindergarten. Jeff took the rest of the week off from work except that today he had a meeting he couldn't miss. This is the first time I have been alone. So far no one has cried, we are working our way through this period of adjustment the best we can.Lily decided to get a hair cut, long hair has a lot more tangles than short hair.Tuesday morning I spent with Mandy at the DMV renewing her permit. Tuesday afternoon Jeff, Lily and I got to go to the school and meet Lily's teacher. The classroom was amazing, and Lily loved it there. We got a packet of papers to read. We had already gotten the class supply list, brought the supplies to the meet the teacher day, but in the new packet we got on Tuesday the teacher informed us we needed to get Lily a mat to take a nap on. I did not know this ahead of time and did not know how my bus riding daughter was goi...

Puppy Kindergarten
2008-06-13 10:07:00
Last night Chloe and I went to our second session of puppy kindergarten. At the first session she was terrified of the other puppies. At the class we work on dog socialization and one command. When we got to the Assisted Living Home, where they hold the class, Chloe went up to each of the residents to say "howdy do" and yes you may pet me. I thought we were off to a good start. They introduce the puppies to each other one on one. Well, Miss Chloe was terrified of a 3 pound Shih Tzu named Gina. Gina chased her and chased her. So basically, Chloe flunked the first day of Puppy Kindergarten. On the second day a new dog came to class, a three month old Akita, (beautiful and very large dog). Made friends immediately and played with her. Yahooo. She is gaining confidence! Turns out she is still terrified of the Australian Shepard, the mini Australian Shepard, the Boxer/Shepard mix and of course little tiny Gina. The trainer also referred to Chloe as Snarky when she is upset. Whoaaa! Anyway,...

All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten!
2008-05-09 17:42:00
(a guide for Global Leadership)All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sand pile at school. These are the things I learned:Share everything.Play fair.Don't hit people.Put things back where you found them.Clean up your own mess.Don't take things that aren't yours.Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.Wash your hands before you eat.Flush.Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofo...
Kindergarten Registration
2008-04-21 15:34:00
Tomorrow I register Lily for kindergarten. She doesn't start until early August. I feel like I have been kicked in the gut. I sure am going to miss that little girl when she is off spreading her sunshine at school.Friday I was able to go to a luncheon for the base spouses group. I was lucky enough to be seated next to two ladies who currently have kindergarteners at the school Lily will attend. I got the scoop. Lots of volunteer opportunities. Both moms were very pleased with the school.Lily has been doing great at our playgroups. They are designed like a pre-school program where mom stays but the teacher conducts stories, songs, crafts, etc. At first listening to another adult was a new concept for Lily to say the least. Now she is understanding what is expected of her and able to participate. I am able to sit in the back and visit with the other moms while Lily does her thing with the kids and teacher. I hope that will translate to a good kindergarten experience, havin...

IT was a nail-biter of a month. But at last the news is in: The idle chitchat, the intense speculation and competitive jockeying are over, and families throughout the Los Angeles area are either exulting in victory or wallowing in defeat.

Kindergarten Report
2008-03-02 17:29:00
Last week my husband and I went in and met with our son?s Kindergarten teacher. It was parent/teacher conference week. Since we moved in November, this was our first opportunity to really sit down and talk with his new teacher. In the past, when I have tried to get feed back on how my son was adjusting to his new class I would be told how ?kind? he is. More specifically what a ?kind gentle soul? he was.Nice words, yes. Still I never really got the answers I needed. After spending half an hour and hearing (again) what a kind gentle soul my son was, I did walk out with a better understanding of how my son is doing and the type of student he is.He is right where he should be academically (yeah). She finds him to be an observer who would rather first watch how others attempt a task before he jumps in. This maybe a sign that he is a bit of a perfectionist. When he does something, he wants it done right the first time. You know we are all born with little personalities. I see myself in my s...

Demystifying kindergarten enrollment by Tech Savvy Mama
2008-02-12 14:06:00
It is February. Despite the fact that we are only 2 months into 2008, many parents I know are busily planning their summers and that means it isn?t too early to start thinking about the next school year. For those of you who have children who will be going to kindergarten in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in the fall, there is tons of information on the MCPS website about enrolling your child in school. No, you can?t just show up on the first day of school camera in hand ready to snap a photo of your child and her brand new backpack. I know from my years of teaching that plenty of parents do it. You don?t want to be that parent who causes panic as the principal finds a spot for your child and the teacher frantically affixes a name tag to a cubby, homework folder, desk, and at least 10 other places in the classroom. Now that you promise not to be that parent, I am here to help you navigate the world that is MCPS. If your child will be 5 years old by Sept...

Kindergarten Ease
2008-02-08 08:37:00
It's been two weeks already that Bethany has been attending Kindy - and she loves it. As you know last Monday was her first day and that went well, I stayed and was included in her learning and exploring - it was brilliant to be part of it all. Then Tuesday she was starting to ease away from me, heading off to play but always looking back to make sure I was still there. I left for an hour that morning and when I returned she was playing musical instruments and singing songs in a group with the teacher, I sat by myself for the rest of that session!Wednesday - that was it. Hardly got through the gate when she said 'OK, you can go now'. And with a tug on my heart and tears in my eyes I left her there. My little girl, in big Kindy, alone. Of course I got home, sat on the sofa and didn't know what to do, I just sat looking at the house phone and my mobile waiting for them to ring...but they never did. Here we are now, two weeks in and she is fine. She really absolutely loves it, talks ...

Kindergarten Temper Tantrum Leads to Handcuffing
2008-01-29 08:13:00
The child, Dennis Rivera, a kindergartener at Public School 81 in Ridgewood, was put in a chair and handcuffed behind his back by a school safety agent after acting up. His mother, Jasmina Vazquez, said "I think it was excessive force. It was unnecessary what they did to my son."She also indicated that her son suffers from asthma, has speech problems, and may have ADD.Not only that, they eventually transported Rivera to Elmhurst Hospital by EMS for psychiatric evaluation. For a tantrum? The incident allegedly occurred on Jan. 17th and Rivera has since been moved to a private school. The police disagree with Vazquez, in a report saying the child was "punching his teacher and swinging wildly at school aides, that he smacked the assistant principal in the face, ran into a corner, and began to throw things on the floor."Donna Lieberman, Executive Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said "The situation with school discipline is out of control,&qu...

Day One: Silverstream Kindergarten
2008-01-28 09:04:00
Today was the first day back for most of the kids who go to Kindy, for some it will be the normal for them and for others it was the excitement of moving to morning sessions from afternoons (meaning they are getting older). But for Bethany today was the first day of not only starting morning sessions, but also starting a new Kindergarten. I have been secretly dreading this happening for a few weeks now. Since the holidays started in December I really don't feel like I have spent much time with Bethany, we have been so busy with the house move that our special time together that we normally have everyday has been interrupted. Also, now that she has started morning Kindy means she is well on her way to starting school soon - a scary thought! At 6.55am this morning Bethany bounded into our bedroom fully dressed and ready to go, she was actually quite excited and wasn't at all interested in having breakfast. She just wanted to play with her new Spongebob Squarepants lunch back pack an...

Hillary Camp's Kindergarten Smear on Obama
2007-12-05 05:11:00
There is something slightly twisted about the latest Clinton camp slam directed at Barack Obama. In an effort to demonstrate Obama has long held ambitions to become president, Hillary's team has come up with damning info from Obama's kindergarten years. They succeeded in turning up a former teacher named Iis Darmawan, who claims that in grade 3, Obama penned an essay titled "I Want to Become President". How diabolical is that?Apparently having presidential ambitions makes you suspect and candidates (read Hillary) don't want to be perceived as scheming, conniving plotters with long standing ambitions to fill the top job.The Clinton camp's sensitivities on this topic became clear when Obama recently said that he hadn't been planning to run for president as long as "some other candidates". This prompted the Clinton people to come up with the kindergarten 'evidence' of young Barack's Machiavellian plot to take the White House. What next? Evidence from a relative that the first ...
