The show has a look and feel like nothing currently on television and a scope not seen since Rome. But it is hard to not think the two hour premiere could have fit everything important into one hour to kill off some of the lulls.The show is a modern day retelling of the story of David (Spoiler Alert for the heathens out there: He goes on to become king) set in a parallel universe and the fake country Gilboa (isn’t that where Anne Hathaway is a princess?) who is currently at war with their neighbors, the equally bad named Gath. I am generally a fan of Grant Morrison, but I try to be "professional" enough to not let the "fanboy" part of my brain override my critical thinking. After reading issue #6, Superman 3-D #2, and a couple of online pieces, including a Grant Morrison interview, I think I have stumbled onto it. This is not Morrison trying to give us yet another sequel to Crisis on Infinite Earths. This is Morrison cramming a bookful of nifty neat ideas, and using a "channel changing" (his words, not mine) storytelling style to show us what happens to the souls of our characters as they fight the good fight. On his "One Kind Favor" release he is working with noted producer T-Bone Burnett, who helped him reproduce the studio conditions of the 1950s.Mr. King is backed by pianist Dr. John, drummer Jim Keltner and bassist Nathan East. The songs include Big Bill Broonzy's "Backwater Blues," Lonnie Johnson's "Tomorrow Night," Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" and T-Bone Walker's "I Get So Weary." I only listened to the sample mp3s of the album, but my impression is that Mr. King is up to his old self. I like the sound of his voice, he sounds strong. As for the playing on the album, the music also sounds very good. Others who have reviewed this music say that B.B.'s guitar playing is also good on this effort.
