Turkish army pushes for military operation into Iraq
2007-04-12 20:39:00
Turkey's army chief pushed for a military incursion into northern Iraq on Thursday to crack down on Turkish Kurd rebels he said had sought refuge there. The call raises the pressure on Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to take a harder line against Kurdish guerrillas and against the Kurdish leadership in northern Iraq, where the rebels are based and train.Buyukanit's comments are the latest in a series of official Turkish statements that have ratcheted up the pressure on neighbouring Iraq over the presence of Kurdish rebels in the north of the country.Turkey has repeatedly urged the Baghdad government and U.S. occupying forces in Iraq to crack down on an estimated 4,000 rebels of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) who use northern Iraq as a springboard to attack targets inside Turkey. Ankara has said it reserves the right under international law to send troops into northern Iraq to tackle the rebels if Iraq and Washington continue to disregard its calls for action. The Kur...

Bookish London
2007-04-04 14:05:00
Photo by Philip Sheldrake  It’s no secret that Londoners love literature just about as much as they love their tabloids. When not sifting the mags to find out where Posh and Becks are currently being preposterous, Londoners are usually nose-in-novel on the Underground or while queueing at Sainsbury’s. Here are just some of the places where we find our favorite wordsmiths in London: 1. Foyle’s bookshop was co-created by two brothers in 1903 after they both failed their civil service exams. The store first sold only textbooks; today it hosts author events (Chuck Palahniuk ring a bell?) and gallery tours at its flagship location in SoHo. It may not be the largest and most exciting shop, but it’s distinguished and impressive. 2. Travel fans (know any of those?) should visit Daunt Travel Bookshop in Hampstead, where it’s rumored that George Orwell once clerked. The bookstore has long been known for its courteous, brilliant staff (owner James D...

American Idol: Lakisha, Melinda, Gina & Sanjaya
2007-03-29 01:21:00
~ Sanjaya Hair Watch: Sanjaya Malakar's peacock-ish hair last night on American Idol was awesome: A Mohawk of seven springy, bouncy ponytails. Sanjaya believes his show-stopping hairstyles will bring him the luck of sevens. I believe this sweetie-pie is becoming more cunning than we know... And it's cool!~ Go Gina Glocksen, who sang well last night. The Chicago area's American Idol contestant sounded steadier than she has in a while. We got the message, Gina: America shouldn't dare rule you out. I still say that Gina chooses the most interesting pieces of music this season.~ Last week I noted that Melinda Doolittle and Lakisha Jones would need to step-it-up in the apparel department to win America's heart. Perhaps they're reading South Side Star :-) ... because it seems both made strides to present a more contemporary appearance. (Well, Simon told them this in person, so maybe he deserves some of the credit!)*** Lakisha accomplished the mission by wearing a pair of sassy, S&M ...

The Turkish Lira Carry Trade: High Interest Rate, Stable Currency
2007-03-17 01:06:00
For the past few years, probably the most popular currency trading strategy is that known as the Carry Trade. The best part about this type of trade ...
Insulters of Turkish-ness beware
2007-03-15 19:44:00
An idea, a potentially stupid one at that, yet one which no one has ever thought of or had the stones to execute: I am going to add a Blogroll to Amerikan Turk which lists all of the blogs out there which habitually "insult Turkishness". Some believe that I am a card-carrying supporter of Article 301....pause...NOT! I will now prove it to you, by gathering all of the toxic waste dump blog sites out there which passionately spew venom, fecal matter and other poisonous tripe towards Turkish people and the Turkish Republic. The size of this list might surprise you, and hopefully give some indication of why it's so important for Turks to be perpetually on their guard against such racism and hatred. Recommendations for inclusion are welcomed. Right now this is just an idea. I haven't done it yet. Maybe I'll come to my senses and re-consider... but I doubt it.

Turkish Bath in Turkey
2007-03-09 16:19:06
Once upon a time, starts the story of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, complaining with the incurable longlasting headaches. The doctors of that time couldn’t find a remedy for the treatment of the illness. One day a young man came with a solution which was hard to believe. The solution was a soap-massage in a Turkish bath . Now and then ; complaining from body pains, long lasting headaches, giving up excess body-weight, desire for feeling fresh and young addresses you to a “Hamam” where you feel like a new-born person. If you’re after the perfect tan, one of the best ways to start it off is with a trip to the traditional Turkish bath (known in Turkey as a ‘Hamam’). Here’s what to expect when you get into your local hamam. It is an experience that never ceases to give you enjoyment, not just because a Turkish Bath leaves you feeling “squeaky” clean, but because it is also something so different to back home. Before the days when people...

By Sarah at ProgressiveKid I’ve been called many things in my life, including “leftie,” “bleeding heart liberal,” and a personal favorite, “animal lover.” I never minded being called any of these things and never understood, frankly, why the person saying them seemed to think they were insults, which has on occasion led to my replying, “Thank you,” followed by a silence mildly uncomfortable for all parties involved. Just recently, however, the name calling occurred again with a different result: I was surprised. It was not that the names themselves were unfamiliar. To the contrary, they were some of the old, recognizable, and not altogether unwelcome names leveled on many prior occasions. What was surprising this time was the context of the name calling. The context I’m referring to is my noncommercial website for kids, Kids’ Rock (http://www.progressivekid.com/-kidsrock). This is a site my business partner and I, wh...

KISHIMOTO's Spring Shoes
2007-02-23 20:33:00
This London brand: Elley Kishimoto has always been experimental and quite daring, especially with the use of cartoon images and extremely bright colours. The spring collection is no exception, however I think the shoes are the best of the whole spring collection, these shoes have thick heels so they should be comfortable and the mixture, bold prints and bright colours is just superb. My favourite has to be the pumps, not many designers get away with having so much details but the Kishimoto brand has got it right and definitely working it. The online shop is coming soon!!! However, if you would like to get a thing or two from this brand, you can visit their new store at 'Maison Bertaux, 27 Greek Street, London W1D 5DF"Pictures from Elley Kishimoto's site

History The cemetery was established upon an act dated November 10, 1981. It is situated around the “Karadeniz Havuzu” (Black Sea Pool) on the grounds of the historical “Atatürk Orman Çiftli?i” (Atatürk Forest Ranch) in Ankara. The architect Özgür Ecevit and the agronomist Ekrem Gürenli, who won the contest organized by the Ministry of National Defense in 1982, designed the state cemetery. It was opened on August 30, 1988 with a state funeral ceremony for the transferred bodies of two presidents,Cemal Gürsel and Cevdet Sunay, and of 61 commanders of the War of Independence. At the opening ceremony were present, President Kenan Evren, Prime Minister Turgut Özal, and leaders of the political parties represented in the parliament, Erdal ?nönü (SHP) and Süleyman Demirel (DYP), and members of the President’s Counsil. Why Turkish kitchen is world class?
2007-02-21 10:04:01
When the best cuisines in the world are judged it comes as a surprise to most people that Turkish cuisine has been rated as one of the three great cuisines of the world, along with French and Chinese. However, if you take a look back in time, the explanation for the extraordinary Turkish food is more understandable. It was during the 500 years of Ottoman rule that Turkish culinary skills were developed.ccess to fresh ingredients was easy and infinite varieties of fish, poultry, fruit and vegetables and a countless number of spices were used. At the same time many people from different cultures settled in the country and this brought further inspiration to the cooking.mong other things found by archeologists was a board from ancient times and the various signs and symbols thereon have been deciphered to reveal a kind of cook book with a list of familiar ingredients and spices. All this is ours to enjoy today! Turkish specialities are numerous and certainly worth a try.

When it comes to national dishes, Turkey has its own traditions and customs. Below you will see just a few ideas. Turkish pizza: Most places in Turkey serve pizza as we know it. The Turkish pizza is a little different but try it anyway. The size can vary from tiny to larger than a plate. The toppings are usually beef, onion, parsley and tomato purée, which are mixed together and put on top of bread dough. It will be served with a piece of lemon to be squeezed over the pizza. Of course there are many other varieties of toppings. The Turkish pizza has more oil than the pizza we know. Osmanish pan: A very special dish which gets its name from the Ottoman period in Turkish history. You can get the osmanish pan with lamb, beef or chicken. It is a stew with different vegetables and spices. The dish is made differently depending on the area and time of the year. Dessert: When it comes to desserts, the Turkish people love anything which is sweet - especially pastries, which are often soaked...
Turkish Tea
2007-02-20 22:03:01
While both Chinese and Indians claim that they first discovered the use and drink of Tea thousands of years ago, Turks evolved their own way of making and drinking the black tea (Çay in Turkish or Camellia Sinensis in Latin), which became a way of life for our culture. Wherever you go in Turkey, tea or coffee will be offered as a sign of friendship and hospitality, anywhere and any time, before or after any meal. Tea plantations and harvestThe production of tea in Turkey mainly started in the early years of the Republic along the eastern Black Sea Region. Many of the tea plantations are centered around the town of Rize, and from the Georgian border to Trabzon, Arakli, Rize, Karadere and Fatsa (near Ordu), reaching in some places 30 kilometers inland and reaching the height of around 1000 m. In 1947 the first tea factory was built in Rize and in 1965 the production of dried tea reached to the level of domestic consumption. The tasks of buying, processing and selling tea was conducted...
Turkish PR II: Tourism in the Mediterranean

Recently, I noticed that CNN International had begun running Turkey's latest Tourism videos as we head into the summer. You've probably seen the Greek, the Southern Cypriot, Bosnian, and Croatian videos, but I feel the competition for tourists in the Mediterranean is heating up. When you think of Turkey, you should  think about the blue waters and white shores of the Mediterranean, and I think this video does a great job. Most interestingly enough, watch for the golf sequence in the middle, a recent focus. You might not realize that Turkey has some beautiful professionally-designed golf courses. at Technorati!">Technorati Tags: Tourism, Turkish Videos, Mediterranean Sea, Golf, Ephesusw, Turkey

Turkish team to inspect Jerusalem Temple Mount
2007-02-17 00:18:08
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Thursday agreed to allow a Turkish team to inspect the construction site at the Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem. Muslims fear excavation at the site will harm the face of the nearby Al-Aqsa Mosque. The announcement was made by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan after he met Olmert in Ankara. Erdogan said his Israeli counterpart had shown him photographs of the construction work, but had failed to convince him that it would not harm the holy sites there. Olmert then agreed to a Turkish suggestion for a technical team from Turkey to inspect the site, Erdogan said. Olmert said he agreed to the inspection because “Israel has nothing to hide.” He added that the matter of the construction on the site had been misconstrued and presented in a tendentious way in the international media. “The construction of this bridge next to the Western Wall has been taken out of context, but we will cooperate with everyone and will be ...

Turkish Delight
2007-02-15 15:57:04
Reay Tannahill suggests that the Persian confection ahbisa (jelly) was the ancestor of Turkish rahat lokum, the long name for the sweet. The etymology of the word lokum has puzzled linguists for many years; it seems to be a corruption of the Arabic word rahat-al hulkum, meaning the contentment of throat while in Ottoman Turkish it means a piece of contentment. So, “Turkish Delight” may not be far off.[1] The history of lokum dates back 230 years. Turkish legend has it that in his endeavour to quell the rumblings of discontent within his harem, a Turkish sultan summoned all his confectionery experts and ordered them to produce a unique dessert to add to the collection of secret recipes for which he was famous. As a result of extensive research, lokum was born. In 1776, during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid I, Bekir Effendi, a fully apprenticed confectioner, arrived in Istanbul from a small town in Anatolia. Bekir set up in a little shop in the center of the city, and qui...
New Turkish PE Fund by Actera Partners to welcome Canadian Pension Funds to
2007-02-09 22:03:00
On February 7th, I happened to notice a page view in my statistics from the office network of Financial News Online, a UK financial newspaper. They just so happened to be searching google for "Private Equity Turkey 2006". So I decided to bite, and to my amazement, it seems the Private Equity industry (in addition to the foreign investment in the Turkish banking industry) is taking off. Actera Partners, formed by Isak Antika, managing director of Antika Partners, and Murat Cavusoglu, formerly a managing director at Bedminster Capital Management, which runs a South Eastern Europe fund (formerly Soros Investment Capital Ltd), have formed a targeted €250m ($325m) joint venture between the €65bn Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and the €67bn Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (press release). That's right. Two very large Canadian pension funds have come together to form one of the largest PE funds focusing exclusively on Turkey. The fund will be focusing on buyout and gro...

Ancient Turkish site set to be flooded
2007-01-28 13:12:02
The Allianoi archaeological site could soon be under water if authorities carry out their plans to flood a newly constructed reservoir. Located in western Turkey, the site is a well-preserved example of an ancient Roman health spa.Archaeologist Ahmet Yaras, head of the Allianoi excavation team, is spearheading a campaign to save the site from being submerged. They are trying to rally international support to pressure the authorities to move the reservoir ? or at least delay the flooding for another five years so that they can finish the excavations.Allianoi is a hot-springs area 18 kilometres northeast of the ruins of ancient Pergamon that was used as a spa in Hellenistic times. It was constructed during major public works done under the reign of the Roman emperor Hadrian during the second century AD. In addition to the spa, the Allianoi site includes public squares, streets, gates, bridges, fountains and buildings. Together, they encompass about 50,000 square metres, and they could...

3,000-year-old dam revives farming in Turkish village
2006-12-14 18:38:01
In this central Turkish village, peasants and archaeologists celebrate a unique achievement -- a 3,246-year-old dam, once buried under mud and slime, is back in service to irrigate farmlands. The dam is a heritage of the Hittites, who ruled over vast areas of the Middle East from 2000 to 1000 BC, fought Pharaoh Rameses The Great, among others, and built some of the biggest cities of the time in the heart of Anatolia, the Asian part of modern Turkey. The 2,500 inhabitants of Alacahoyuk know the Hittites well: since the early 20th century, archaeologists have been digging the remains of a royal city at the entrance of their village about 160 kilometers (100 miles) east of Ankara. The tombs of the settlement, its foundations still guarded by two imposing stone lions, have yielded some of the most precious Hittite treasures -- plates, jewelry, bronze and gold statuettes now on display at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara.Read the rest of this article...

2006-12-03 22:27:00
If one were to analyze the Private Equity Industry in Turkey, one might come to a quick realization upon their search, and then state clearly, "There is no industry!" Now, before all you VC's rush to object, this blogger must ask you, how forthcoming have you been to share this knowledge? Have the goals that you set long ago really been achieved? Despite all the economic and asymmetric excuses that you may entail, one only has to look as far as the Turkish Private Equity and Venture Capital Association's website only to find that it hasn't been updated since 2004. Do we still have an industry in its infancy, or are the constraints of minority shareholder rights, government legislation and an emerging market economy constricting our efforts? In addition, the idea that VC's are over-protective and deliberately withholding this information as proprietary could be said to directly conflict with the objective of the Grandstanding Hypothesis. So where are the results? Who is cu...
