34 Well-designed Kitchens
2011-10-21 22:57:00
Here are more than just a few (more than 30, to be exact) kitchen designs – very different in style and size, but all are gorgeous and well-designed. All of them are deservedly the heart of these homes. Probably your kitchen is far from many of the ones here (mine is, for sure!), but you can get plenty of inspiration from these photos. I’ve grouped them into 4: The Rustics show you the perfect countryside kitchen. The Farm kitchens have less bling, they are more sane but nonetheless lovely. Traditionally Elegant is just that: timeless elegance, subtlety and lots of great details. Finally, the Modernos: sleek, clean lines and glossy surfaces for you modern-lovers.   The Rustics This rustic kitchen would be perfect in a chalet or a mountain cottage. A perfect setting for a countryside family breakfast. (although the neighbouring house in the window seems to be a little close..) … and if you fancy homemade pizza (or really flat bread – don’t l...

Luxury in Kitchens
2008-07-19 03:54:00
Subdued luxury is the trend for this year in interior design. What is luxury when we are talking about kitchens? For me it is not exactly glitter and precious materials. It can be this gorgeous minimalist look with curved elegant forms - we are not made to work at straight lines. At a time when the kitchen is the new entertainment room where preparing food is a communal activity, it is ultimate luxury to have a well designed ergonomic workspace like this one (left) wich the Pedini Kitchen offers you. Space can be luxury, too.In a Greenwhich Village apartment, designer Thomas Britt melded comfort and exoticism. The kitchen and dining area were made less ?raw and open? to the adjacent livingareasays architectural designer Peter Napolitano. The elongated custom cabinetry plays off the large windows. And the paint of the cupboards bleds with the walls -as a result the room looks much more spacious. Here is a rule for best kitchen design, by Madonna's brother, who designed not only her ...

What Everyone Should Know About Italian Kitchens
2008-05-06 07:00:00

Another Kitchen Weekend For Me
2008-05-03 00:12:00
And, so this is another weekend of total kitchen immersion for me...lots of work to do!!! And, here I sit, with the music cranked WAY up. For a moment, there, we almost got crazy and booked a flight to the jazzfest, but can you imagine, coming back on Monday, leaving at 11 am (the only flight) and arriving at jfk (an hour from home) after 6 pm for a typical 3 hour flight, if that? Not even I am that crazy! But, turn it on and crank it up, that's what I recommend...JAZZFEST LIVE THIS WEEKEND ON WWOZOh, and if the music cuts in and out...that's sort of how it goes down there, stuff happens, you get what you get (hmmm, sort of like kitchens!) No, I'm kidding, really, no one get nervous now!  I'm loving this music, enjoy your weekend! The song now is something about needing eyes behind your head. :)

So I made my eat-in kitchen a fabulous walk-in closet. My coworker Kirsten came across the ad in a magazine and commented, "In Manhattan, we do this because we don't cook and we don't have any closet space."She went on to tell me that one of her friends sublets an apartment from a girl who stored her extra shoes in the oven.
Kitchens - Go Ahead and Vent!
2008-04-21 12:07:00
At KBIS, I took a 1/2 day sort of refresher course on venting. There is not a whole lot new in venting concepts, but, it did reinforce and remind me of the "ick" factor, which I'll explain. Here's what's happening. First, our kitchen floor plans are more OPEN to other rooms. This means that pollutants from cooking have more opportunity to freely move about your home, hanging out in your furnishings, your artwork, your pillows, walls, flooring, you get the idea. Just as an fyi, grease from cooking turns into vapor and floats in the air as particles for as long as 72 hours!ADD TO THAT, the tighter construction of newer homes, which can encourage mold growth and trap pollutants, and your health becomes at risk for allergies, asthma, lung disease, and who knows what else.  A very impressive ick factor, yes? AND, if that is not enough, indoor pollution is considered to rank within the top 5 environmental risks to the public, accor...

I'm here in Chicago for KBIS
2008-04-11 04:59:00
Hello kitchen fans! Had a great flight yesterday on JetBlue. JetBlue is either fantastic or horrible. Yesterday, on a week's old plane, it was great. Today, I attended two half day seminars. The first was on kitchen ventilation (use your hood or else all these little particulates will get over everything...heat, vapors, and food particulates, yuck.) Just use it. But, a lot more on this later, I'll expand on what was covered in the seminar (I know you're on the very edge of your seats for this but you'll have to be patient.)  ;)And, I attended a seminar on green residential design. As things, products, and philosophies change fairly quickly, it's important to keep up to date. Took tons of notes and will expand on that too. Then, off to a GE press event (LOVE those press events!) More on THAT too. Meanwhile, here's a photo I took of a small spot of the show floor, but trust me, this is what the whole show floor looked like this afternoon, and this was less than 24 hours bef...

Going to KBIS in Chicago!
2008-04-07 19:25:00
One of my most favorite things to do year after year is to go to KBIS. My husband usually comes with me, I see old friends, attend fabulously fabulous press events (massage event, anyone? IMAC event?) and just love the whole thing. I've been inundated with pre-KBIS emailings, postcards and other good stuff, and I look at everything. I will be spotting trends, perusing kitchen design both good and yawn-worthy, extricating myself from nonstop talking marketing people, and watching those super-bending dancers at the hourly show at the Kohler booth. Please, kitchen Gods, don't bring back the Maxewll smart schtick at a booth I can't remember the name of, I can't deal with that again... I am SO ready to go...leaving Wednesday and coming back on Sunday. I'll be blogging for Glam...more soon!

Simple to Remember Guidelines to Choosing Colors for Kitchens
2008-03-05 17:35:00
How do you choose what colors will work for your kitchen design? It’s easier than you think. Once you eliminate what won’t work, you are left with a simple palette to choose from. So here are a few ways to filter out colors from your kitchen.Color for Small Spaced KitchensDon’t use dark timbers and colors that will make the space appear smaller. So avoid dark reds, purples, dark blues and greens. Look for clear crisp colors or whites with a tint of blue, green or yellow for a subtle background of color. Keep cabinetry simple and unadorned and avoid clutter as it will create chaos in a small kitchen. Color for Large Open Plan Spaced KitchensDon’t make a huge contrast in color to the remainder of the décor in your home unless you want your kitchen to visually dominate the living space. Choose a color that flows with the single open plan space. Generally open plan living uses one color for the walls and has small pockets of color to define specific areas within this. Open plan ...

Kitchen Blog Anniversary
2008-02-06 23:24:00
Talking about kitchens...does it ever end? It's been a year since I wrote my first post on this blog. I started with a little hesitancy, a bit unsure of where this was going. Somehow I just kept thinking of kitchen related issues to talk about. At this moment, I have so many kitchen focused things to talk about, I don't know what to talk about first! This is such a natural process for me...just to toss out ideas, stir up the pot a bit, and lots more. I love this process. I've also met so many amazing bloggers who have welcomed me into the design blogging community from the very start. I actually didn't know about this whole, well, underworld isn't the best word, but universe of blogging, until I started blogging, and then, what a surprise I found! Cool people, great ideas, interactivity at its best. So, I'm feeling good at this one year mark. I also feel I'm at my prime in life and in my career. I've actually never been more happy, more confident, fully engaged with life in a...

Exploring New Kitchens
2008-01-24 12:48:00
The wine photos coming up for the next month or so were mostly taken in kitchens other than my own. We consumed A LOT of wine over the Christmas holiday and I am just caught up enough to start writing about it.One of the first was a 2005 De Martino Organic Sauvignon Blanc. It hails from the Maipo Valley of Chile, has a real cork closure, clocked in at 12.5% alcohol by volume and cost about $10 at MV Wine and Spirit in Madison, CT.On the nose I found lemon, flowers, grass, and peach. In the mouth, the wine showed citrus, lemon, and tropical fruit. It was crisp, but not nearly as tart as New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs. I think the Chile style is good one for wine drinkers who want a refreshing Sauvignon Blanc but who can't stand the mouth-puckering acidity of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Definitely a good buy at this price point.
More With Martha Stewart
2008-01-12 16:44:00
There's more that comes to mind today, as I think about last evening's New York Times' event with Martha Stewart, and I'd like to share it with you!Interesting bits and pieces...As Martha sets out for the drive to the city each morning with her hot water and lemon, she carries the beverage in a paper cup, which she reuses. Martha spoke passionately about sustainable living, wanting her products to last. She talked about towels, or was it sheets, that are from her collections, that have lasted 17 years! In regard to food, Martha was a very early advocate (early 80s) of the locally grown produce movement, a la Alice Waters and Jeremiah Tower, notable chefs of that period. Martha encourages everyone to grow their own produce. As a child, Martha had to do many chores in the garden, on her relatives' farms, where she spent time, and her parents believed in self sufficiency in a big way, teaching tasks to Martha and her siblings with expectations that they would be done properly, inst...
Blogging For Kitchens
2008-01-05 17:32:00
Here is some really great kitchen info found in some of my favorite blogs! An interesting take on working appliances into surrounding storage comes from Materialicious. I can see these pieces in a small second home, a cabin or cottage, when you just need the basics, but you want some style, or, naturally, in an urban apartment setting. Cool! From Janet at Remodelista, something brand new, a 36" wide horizontal access dishwasher from Smeg. I love to see new ways to do the same task, and the innovations just keep coming in recent years. My friend, Kelly, from Kitchen Sync, talks about very practical issues regarding challenges in the remodeling process. We know there must be one or two, right? And, starting the New Year off green, K+BB Green's Friday's links. An interesting selection it is, too.
My Danish Families' Kitchens
2007-12-25 13:18:00
Today is Christmas, I'm the only one up right now. The cold is surrounding me, a candle burns, and I think warm thoughts of my family in and around Copenhagen. I've spoken to a few via email and phone, an uncle who called last night at midnight his time, 7 pm (I think) our time, when he knew our U.S. family was all together. Sweet! I think of my cousin's daughter (my second cousin?) who just had twins in October with her (married) partner, one of the twins who has been hospitalized since then, having several heart operations. They skipped Christmas at my cousin's home, choosing to stay at the hospital. And, at the other end of life's journey, I think of my uncle who just had his 94th birthday and lives alone, and happily, in his apartment, the orange kitchen seen below. Also, of another uncle and his family who will visit and dine today (12, in a very small dining room) at an aunt's small, log cabin home, overlooking the sea.Near or far, family is what life...

Gray Kitchens For A Gray Day
2007-12-16 20:15:00
This must be the most gray day in history! We're having a nor'easter, and it seems as if everything is gray. Well, not everything. The backdrop of the day is surely gray, but I happen to like this type of day, at this time of year. You have gray skies, then, especially now, there are still trees with beautiful, bright, brown, leaves, peppering the gray skies, that have not fallen yet, the brown tree trunks, some white snow, and green ivy as a ground cover. All this from my window. Gray, brown, white, green. It works for me. Another beautiful color palette by Mother Nature. So, perfect inspiration for, what else, gray kitchens! Neutral, cozy (some), simple, elegant, charming. Lots of different looks in a gray color scheme. What are cold, gray, skies, to some, may be a cozy backdrop to others. Sort of like these kitchens, I presume. Most images have been collected from Desire To Inspire, a favorite blog with endless, absolutely endless, interior design ideas and inspiratio...

Red is great to brighten up your kitchen, but it is best not to overdo it. Below are some examples of kitchen ware in red that can give some colour to your kitchen. The retro-style fridge is from Smeg, that cute heart shaped dish from Le Creuset, the red toaster from Dualit, the stoneware casserole is from Le Creuset as well, the mixer is from Kitchen Aid, the washing-up bowl and brush are designed by Normann Copenhagen. Green Planet, Green Kitchens
2007-12-11 13:00:00
Yesterday was the ceremony for the award of the Nobel Peace Prize. Of course, since Al Gore is the recipient, it is especially interesting to hear his speech on our planet's climate crisis, including his philosophy, ideas, and solutions. Just as interesting, and compelling, is the speech given by R. K. Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Most likely, one does not hear about this second speech, only Al Gore's, so take a look.I am not a scientist. I am also not a full fledged treehugger, nor do I have an expanse of knowledge in this area. I'd say that I am increasingly making real efforts to become aware of this issue, especially as it relates to my work. This is a very broad issue to sort through. It will take time and it will take a commitment to continually seek out knowledge and learn to apply that knowledge in my work. Take a look at the speeches given yesterday.  It did occur to me yesterday, when I put the tv on, that...
