Only 48% of Kiwis have life insurance
2008-03-25 04:02:00 AIG last week released the results of a survey of 380 people which canvassed views on a range of personal financial issues, including life insurance. Some interesting points to ponder… · 48% of Kiwis have life insurance - compared with 80% of Australians (taken from a similar survey carried out in 2005), 67% of Singaporeans and 53% of Hong Kong residents. · Two primary reasons were given by respondents for not purchasing cover: 1) a lack of funds and 2) the belief that insurance is not worth the cost. · Of those respondents that said they were uninsured, 71% said they would use their savings if the need arose and the rest would rely on family support or equity in their property while 50% of these respondents said they could not survive more than 6 months without their usual income. One of the conclusions reportedly drawn by AIG was that “the resistance to insurance take-up stems largely from the incorrect assumption th...

We have lost a Giant among Kiwis
2008-01-14 11:17:00 Obituary: Sir Edmund HillarySir Edmund Hillary, who has died at the age of 88, made it to the summit of Everest in 1953, and became the first man on the planet to reach its highest point. I heard the news when I was driving to uni at around 11:00am, 11 January, 2008. This could be one of the darkest day of my life as I admire this Kiwi Hero more than any other famous people in the worldAs a boy in New Zealand, Edmund Hillary's fragile appearance belied his ground-breaking potential. At school, he was in a gym group for those lacking co-ordination and admitted to feeling a "deep sense of inferiority". But the 40-mile journey to school in Auckland each day gave young Edmund many hours to pore over adventure stories and travel ever further in his mind.Unrecorded achievementAlthough Sir Edmund briefly worked as a beekeeper after he left school, he had found his true vocation at the age of 16 while on a school trip to Mount Ruapehu, 320km (200 miles) south of Auckland. He had seen snow fo...

Ecotality: Study Questions Solar?s Potential - as Kiwis Develop Solar Energ
2007-04-06 22:41:00 by Ecotality blogger Bill Hobbs. Originally published today, April 6, 2007 If solar power is going to play a significant role in the energy equation of the future, there must be advances in technologies to store that power and more investment by manufacturers, concludes a new federally funded study by University of Massachusetts Amherst scientist Erin Baker. But in New Zealand researchers have developed new solar energy-collecting dyes that promise to make solar energy much easier and less expensive to collect. The UMASS researchers? report ?explores the viability of sun-fueled technologies through a combination of evaluations by experts and economic modeling, allowing the researchers to look at solar power?s role in the electricity sector in 15-year chunks through 2095,? says the UMASS-Amherst news release. Baker has been invited to submit the article to Energy Economics as part of a special issue on Technological Change and Uncertainty in Environmental Economics. It is the first ...

Bangladesh brought down to earth by Kiwis
2007-04-04 00:39:00 Bangladesh brought down to earth by Kiwis By Cricketguru Bangladesh Cricket team was brought down to earth from their euphoria of entering into the Super 8 stage by New Zealand. The warm-up game loss to the minnows may have actually aided the Kiwis in preparing themselves for this game and giving the due respect to the Bangladesh team and playing according to a plan and executing it with clinical precision. Like a true professional side they did not repeat any of the mistakes that they have committed four weeks back on March 6th right from the coin toss. Fleming put Bangladesh into batting first this time as he was very much aware of New Zealand top and middle order collapse in that match when he gifted the first use of the wicket in early morning conditions to the Bangladeshi bowlers after winning the toss and saw his team struggling at 75 for 6.To their credit Bangladesh too tried not to repeat their mistakes of their disastrous outing in that rain affected 22 overs ...

nEw zeaLanD..kiWis..the most underRaTed bunch
2007-03-02 21:09:00 kiWis are the most underRaTed bunch of crikKeteRs. nEw zeaLanD was the first team who started utilizing the 15 over fielding restrictions (imposed since the '92 world cUP) intelligently. The dynamic captaincy of Martin Crowe in the '92 cUP saw him promoting Mark Greatbatch to open the innings for nEw zeaLanD who tore the bowling apart (time and again) and has shown the world how to utilize the first 15 overs...and the rest as you all know is hiStorY. It was during the same time that the great nEw zeaLanD leader showed the world how to utlize spin bowling in the first 15 overs effectively by opening with Deepak Patel. ofcourse the game has progressed much more in the last 15 years but it was heartening to see how nEw zeaLanD made an impact at that world cUP. The last 15 years has seen a rejuvenated nEw zeaLanD cricket team with a good crop of multi dimensional players. If it was Sir Richard Hadlee who put nEw zeaLanD on the cricket map of the world with his bowling exploits in t...
