As much as this TV Addict would like to agree with Maureen Ryan’s assertion that the only reason NBC President Ben Silverman picked up KNIGHT RIDER for the entire season is because “KITT has taken over NBC!” I can’t help but feel that a car running a major television network is somewhat ridiculous. Which is why I’d like to take this opportunity to post theTVaddict.com’s very own theory that let’s face it, makes way more sense. When NBC President Ben Silverman first announced the re-launch of the KNIGHT RIDER franchise, this TV Addict was more than prepared to cut him a little slack. I mean who can blame the neophyte Peacock President for wanting to generate a few splashy headlines, cash in on America’s seemingly never-ending love affair with 80’s nostalgia, not to mention, grab, what surely amounted to a huge pile of cash from Ford [Three cheers for vertical integration!]. That said, following the train-wreck, err… auto collision that was February’s two-hour movie [see review here], Ben Silverman is officially running on empty. Last night’s season premiere of the re-tooled KNIGHT RIDER series was quite literally unwatchable. And believe me, this TV Addict tried. Twice! After only managing to get through twenty minutes of the pre-air premiere courtesy of iTunes, I made the unfortunate mistake to take a second shot last night thinking the show couldn’t possibly as bad as...

Over the past few years, I have participated in a television death pool named for an actress "who had a proclivity of being on quickly canceled programs." Unfortunately, she apparently now has a lawyer, so the name has changed "despite the fact it ran for nearly eight years without "harming" her career." (The quotes are attributed to the creator of the Alison LaPlaca, I mean, Ted Marshall Open Television Death Pool). As I?ve mentioned before, in my first year, I finished an impressive sixth place out of over 100 entries but finished in the middle of the pack last year. Although I?ve spent much of the past few days preparing for and participating in fantasy football drafts, I need to quickly shift my focus to see what television shows I think will be cancelled at the end of the 2008-2009 television season. It looks like the negative reaction that followed February’s two-hour KNIGHT RIDER movie may not have fallen on deaf ears after-all. Talking to the Canadian media [including your very own TV Addict] at Global TV’s 2008 UpFront this morning in Toronto, KNIGHT RIDER star Justin Brueing had this to say when asked how the series returning this fall will differentiate itself from the underwhelming two-hour movie. “Just as the original series was reinvented as a sequel for the two-hour movie, the new series will be reinvented again. Picking up six months after our little origin story, everything will be different. The car will have a different look and will be able to morph into a different attack mode each week. There’s also talk of different gadgets in every episode.” Needless to say, this TV Addict thinks I speaks for everyone when I say, here’s hoping third times a charm!

The original series aired on NBC from 1982 to 1986, and quite frankly, it hasn't aged well. Cheap production values, unsophisticated plots, and David Hasselhoff combined to create some first-rate cheese. Still, it was reasonably good-natured and just sophisticated enough to make every boy born between 1970 and 1974 drool over that wicked cool car and tune in every week. I love driving my Ford Mustang, so I was quite happy with the make and model being used for the Knight Industries Three Thousand car (?KITT?). I was even willing to give Val Kilmer a go as the voice of KITT, and I thought a cameo by David Hasselhoff (from the original series) would be fun. The director had worked on Rome and Deadwood ? he had to be a smart cookie.I must confess, the hairs on the back of my neck prickled when the old Knight Rider theme began to play. But it was replaced within seconds by generic rock and from then on, the TV movie resembled a 2 hour car commercial: lots of shots of the tires, the windshield, the grille etc. No amount of fast cutting allowed for the fact that the director Steve Shill had forgotten to make the car chases exciting.Worse, the storyline was dull, formulaic American TV stuff; the leads were bland, w...

The new solar-powered, hybrid K.I.T.T. or Knight Industries Three Thousand, in the new Knight Rider TV movie, which aired last night , gets 167 MPG ... if it were real. Since KITT is self-aware, he describes his powerplant this way: "My system is largely solar-powered. It recycles ninety-one percent of its expended energy, allowing a ratio of 167 miles traveled for every gallon of fuel burned." Mike Traceur, the son of Michael Knight and KITT's driver (partner?) thought his ride would run on hydrogen, plutonium or something really cool he has never heard of. Not so."What if you are in Nebraska and your hydrogen fuel system breaks down? Complicated isn't always better," explains Sarah Graiman, daughter of the scientist that created KITT. youtube Woops, I meant this one: youtube Knight Rider is the third new light-scifi show I've seen of the season, after Bionic Woman and Terminator. I'd put it behind Terminator and about even with the deceased Bionic Woman. A group of bad guys steal technology from inventor Charles Graiman (Bruce Davison). Needing somebody to break the inscription code on Graiman's computers, the thieves go after his daughter, Sarah (Deana Russo). She's saved by K.I.T.T 3000, Graiman's super car that escaped from the ambush to search for Sarah whom he finds and automatically, through pre-programming, takes Mike Traceur (Justin Bruening). Mike is Michael Knight's, from the original series, son, a former Army ranger in debt to a loan shark. There's also an F.B.I. agent who doesn't do much of anything. The series is well-made, if not totally compelling. Some of the chase scenes are very good, especially the crash at the end. The star of the show is K.I.T.T. and it doesn't disappoint....
